orienteering 46:59 [3] 5.8 km (8:06 / km) +738ft 6:47 / km

At Mt. Tom, get all 15 controls in any order (was supposed to be 18, but 3 in the "Northeast Kingdom" were deemed too dangerous in the conditions). 3-4" of snow, a little slippery but not too bad.

Good run, just one miss of maybe 20 seconds (although a bunch of the controls are purposely very easy). Left calf ok until the very end, but then it tighened up and will be bad again for a while. Only other annoyance was I managed to clear all the splits I had taken on my new (and inferior) watch, but splits usually don't mean much at this event because people take controls in different orders. Anyway, live and learn.... Routes are at http://users.crocker.com/~pg/.

orienteering 1:10:20 [3] 6.77 km (10:23 / km) +804ft 8:48 / km

WCOC meet at Paugusset. Not a good day, feeling my age, I guess. Not much energy, left calf still sore, back got sore halfway around, a bunch of falls and a couple nasty gashes, walked a whole lot. And to top it off, lost my watch 3/4 of the way around, so no splits (I still kept trying to take splits at each of the last 4 controls; habits are hard to break.).

Only a couple small misses (30 seconds each, more or less), but I was stopping so much and walking so much that there was no excuse for missing at all.

On the other hand, it was a nice day and I'm not yet in a nursing home.... :-)

Routes/comments are at the usual spot (http://users.crocker.com/~pg/).

Note

Caught some sort of stomach bug yesterday, totally miserable, still shaky today.

Wednesday Nov 20, 2002 #

biking 32:06 [3]

Short ride on back roads along the river. 38 degrees and fog (forecast was for low 50s and sun!).

Monday Nov 18, 2002 #

trail running 34:16 [3] 3.5 mi (9:47 / mi)

U to the power line and back just before dark. 3" of slush. Not good for my left calf muscle.

Sunday Nov 17, 2002 #

track 26:23 [2] 3.1 mi (8:31 / mi)

At the Smith indoor track (3" of snow/sleet/freezing rain on the ground outside) with Phil. Warm-up/down, easy pace, mostly complaining about how slow we are.... :-)

track 13:27 [4] 2.0 mi (6:43 / mi)

Alternating slightly quicker and slightly slower laps (200 meter track). Actually felt not so bad. First time to the track in perhaps 9 months.

Friday Nov 15, 2002 #

biking 1:18:53 [3]

Turners Falls, Greenfield. Low 60s, windy. A good effort.

Thursday Nov 14, 2002 #

biking 1:33:16 [3]

Whately, Conway. A little cool (upper 40s), but bright and sunny and fine to be out on the bike. Just have to figure how many shirts to wear (2 was about right, a little warm climbing, a little nippy coming down).

Wednesday Nov 13, 2002 #

trail running 1:09:18 [3] 8.2 mi (8:27 / mi)

Robert Frost loop on Mt. Toby, a little slower going out/up than last time, a little quicker back/down. Upper 40s, drizzle, very wet, but much nicer for running than when it's warmer.

Monday Nov 11, 2002 #

biking 41:11 [3]

Supposed to be a gentle ride, but worked a bit harder than planned. Mid 60s, very windy, wet road.

Sunday Nov 10, 2002 #

orienteering 2:12:47 [3] 13.2 km (10:04 / km) +1936ft 8:13 / km

Blue Hills Traverse. Not a good run, felt OK for a while but faded badly in the second half. Me routes and a few comments.

Friday Nov 8, 2002 #

biking 1:22:25 [3]

Greenfield, Turners Falls. Very windy. Put out a good effort without going very fast, but it was nice to be out on the bike again. Don't know how many more days will be ok for biking before winter sets in. Today was upper 50s...

Blue Hills Traverse coming on Sunday. Supposed to be warm, unfortunately...

Thursday Nov 7, 2002 #

trail running 1:09:35 [3] 8.2 mi (8:29 / mi)

Robert Frost loop on Mt. Toby. Good effort, picked up the pace a bit on the way back.

Sunday Nov 3, 2002 #

trail running 10:00 [3] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Another proper warm-up.

orienteering 47:39 [4] 6.5 km (7:20 / km) +787ft 6:11 / km

Felt good again, never tired, and the hills up out of 7 and up to 11 felt easy. Hesitating less than yesterday except for from 5 to 6 when I was doing it on purpose.

My routes and some comments.

A fine weekend, great job by Quantico. Only downside was the long drive home. Got home after midnight, spent all day Monday at a tax seminar and by late afternoon was having a hard time staying awake....

Saturday Nov 2, 2002 #

trail running 10:00 [3] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

A proper warm-up in the woods (for once!). Actually, it helps in a way other loosening up the legs and lungs - gets me used to my one-contact system, so when the race starts I am literally better focused.

orienteering 45:54 [4] 5.75 km (7:59 / km) +951ft 6:22 / km

Felt pretty good physically, walked 5 times up short steep slopes (maybe 30-40 meters each), ran the last part well.

My routes and some comments.
