Sunday Apr 29, 2001 #

orienteering 1:17:32 [4] 9.0 km (8:37 / km)

30 controls, order optional (distance is a guess). Ran ok, didn't miss more than a minute. Another really nice spring day

trail running 16:20 [2] 1.6 mi (10:12 / mi)

Had to go back and have a snack at the water/food stop...

Saturday Apr 28, 2001 #

trail running 10 [2] 1.0 mi (10 / mi)

Warm-up

orienteering 53:03 [4] 6.3 km (8:25 / km)

NEOC meet at Wolf's Den in NE Connecticut. A little lazy on the first half, good effort on the second half. No mistakes of any significance.

Thursday Apr 26, 2001 #

trail running 2:31:10 [3] 12.0 mi (12:36 / mi)

Seven Sisters course again, more aggressive on the downhills. A good effort helped by a perfect day (race pace is probably 2:20-2:25, assuming good weather). Race is Sunday May 6, may try one more outing before then.

Wednesday Apr 25, 2001 #

road running 37:38 [2] 4.5 mi (8:22 / mi)

Flat and easy

Tuesday Apr 24, 2001 #

track 25:03 [2] 3.0 mi (8:21 / mi)

Warm-up/down.

track 18:16 [4] 2.5 mi (7:18 / mi)

4x400@87, 2x200@41 with an equal amount of very slow recovery. No energy or willpower, so cut the workout short.

Monday Apr 23, 2001 #

trail running 1:22:55 [3] 6.5 mi (12:45 / mi)

Seven Sisters course to the third sister (a little past half way) and back (2800' climb). Felt dead on the first few hills, then progressively better. With Phil Bricker (only reason I went was he called up... had been thinking I should do something, but was probably going to pass).

Sunday Apr 22, 2001 #

road running 5:00 [1] 0.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Warm-up

orienteering 1:07:59 [4] 9.1 km (7:28 / km)

Day 2, hot. Very tired, but didn't fade as bad as I feared, even though I was once again tripping/falling a lot. Just haven't done enough woods running to get used to picking my feet up enough.
By the way, a very fine O' meet.

Saturday Apr 21, 2001 #

orienteering 1:13:50 [4] 9.2 km (8:02 / km)

Day 1 at Quantico. Navigated without problems, ran pretty well except last 20 minutes. Got tired, tripping and falling a lot.

trail running 5:00 [1] 0.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Warm-up

Thursday Apr 19, 2001 #

trail running 1:06:02 [3] 7.0 mi (9:26 / mi)

Mt. Norwottuck map, trail run with map on Robert Frost Trail (1900' climb). Not so bad.

Wednesday Apr 18, 2001 #

track 28:27 [2] 3.5 mi (8:08 / mi)

Warm-up/down

track 25:04 [4] 3.75 mi (6:41 / mi)

A couple of 800s@3:00 and a couple 1600s@6:15 with slow 400s in between. The usual struggle...

Monday Apr 16, 2001 #

trail running 2:46:31 [2] 12.0 mi (13:53 / mi)

Seven Sisters race course (steep, rocky hills, 5100' climb). Relatively easy pace aerobicly, lots of walking uphills, not aggressive on the downhills, but the quads get trashed anyway. Good outing.

Sunday Apr 15, 2001 #

trail running 1:32:03 [3] 10.0 mi (9:12 / mi)

In the Pelham hills, maybe a mile of snow and a couple miles wet, but mostly dry and nice. Longer than I planned, but the company was good... Another beautiful spring day.

Saturday Apr 14, 2001 #

trail running 2:37:53 [4] 16.0 mi (9:52 / mi)

Northern Nipmuck trail race, 16 miles, 3400' climb. Good effort, didn't fade too bad at end. Beautiful day, 50 degrees, course wet in places but no snow. Best time 2:11.

Friday Apr 13, 2001 #

trail running 34:18 [3] 3.5 mi (9:48 / mi)

Getting up to 30-40% bare ground!

Thursday Apr 12, 2001 #

orienteering 1:04:23 [3] 7.0 mi (9:12 / mi)

On Mt. Norwattuck map, mostly on trails, some off-trail. Had a good time "mapping" some new bike trails. Snow is almost all gone and I could go where I wanted. (Another nice spring day - light rain, low 40s.)

Wednesday Apr 11, 2001 #

trail running 35:02 [3] 3.5 mi (10:01 / mi)

Tuesday Apr 10, 2001 #

track 24:21 [2] 2.9 mi (8:24 / mi)

Warm-up/down

track 24:49 [4] 3.6 mi (6:54 / mi)

10x (400@88, 200 slow). A struggle.

Monday Apr 9, 2001 #

trail running 38:37 [3] 4.0 mi (9:39 / mi)

On Mt. Toby, 70 degrees, running in shorts, but still ice/slush/deep snow. In over my knees in a few places...

Sunday Apr 8, 2001 #

trail running 1:53:00 [3] 10.0 mi (11:18 / mi)

On Mt. Norwottuck, mostly south slopes. Part bare ground, part ice/snow, very wet. Rain, fog, freezing rain up high, mid-30s. This is spring? Nevertheless, a good outing.

Saturday Apr 7, 2001 #

trail running 40:36 [3] 4.0 mi (10:09 / mi)

Still a lot of ice/snow on M. Toby. Sinking in 4-8" in places. May be May before it's gone. What a pain.

Thursday Apr 5, 2001 #

track 24:10 [2] 3.0 mi (8:03 / mi)

warm-up/down

track 27:55 [4] 4.0 mi (6:59 / mi)

Alternating quarters faster (6-min pace) and slower (8-min pace).

Wednesday Apr 4, 2001 #

road running 1:02:24 [3] 8.4 mi (7:26 / mi)

Sunday Apr 1, 2001 #

orienteering 1:24:44 [3] 9.9 mi (8:34 / mi)

A surprising reversal! Me: After waking up feeling quite battered and not sure if I would run, I ended up running better and orienteering better (perhaps a few Advil helped?). The course: just fine -- interesting and intelligent use of the terrain (maybe due to the fact that Eric Weyman was course consultant for day 2 - thanks, Eric).
Back home it is still winter with 3-4 inches of new snow...
