Note

Feeling very battered after yesterday's race -- sore quads (which I figure is a lot better than anything sore on the back of my legs), plus the big toe which, though it was not complaining while I was running, sure has been complaining since. More swollen again, plus a variety of colors, mostly red, purple, and black.

So there will not be any training for at least a few days.

And if the toe is still complaining a week from now, maybe another reason to scrub the NC trip.

Sunday Feb 26, 2012 #

Note

There is a Board meeting on this evening. Not listening in (family obligations). Maybe Eddie is?

In any case, here is a report from Rick Worner (the newly appointed boss of the teams) on how teams did last year in relation to there self-imposed goals in the strategic plan.

10 AM

road running 5:28 intensity: (16 @1) + (23 @2) + (4:49 @3) 0.63 mi (8:41 / mi) +16ft 8:28 / mi
ahr:143 max:161 weight:139.5lbs shoes: pegasus #2

Right from the outset I didn't think it was going to be a good day. Went outside to jog down the driveway and back to see if the big toe was good enough to run, and it seems OK, hurt a little but not bad. But 50 yards and the driveway and 50 yards back and /i was breathing hard and feeling quite tired. Not a good omen.

But off to the Amherst 10 Mile, also the New England Champs. Fun to race in these bigger events even if I don't even make the top half of the field. And running for the first time for the Springfield running club (GSH) instead of the Amherst/Northampton club (Sugarloaf) that I've been a member of for some 35 years. SMAC doesn't make an effort to send teams to the Grand Prix races whereas GSH does, and it's more fun to be part of a team. Plus GSH pays your entry fees.

Warmed up, warmed up a little more, still felt crappy. Cool (mid 30s) and quite andy out of the NW.

road running race 1:17:04 intensity: (9 @1) + (11 @2) + (4:46 @3) + (45:05 @4) + (26:53 @5) 10.0 mi (7:42 / mi) +1263ft 6:53 / mi
ahr:160 max:168 shoes: x-talon 212 #2

What can you say, 77 minutes of misery. What can you do, just keep plugging away. Not my day. Legs weren't great to start and just got worse. Quads were shot by the end. A real struggle just getting up the hills, really wanted to walk the steep bit on the last one but the GSH leader was out there cheering so no choice, just keep going. Thought I could do 74-75, but sure wasn't to be. Some days are like that.

17th in the 60+ (9th 2 years ago), 5th in the club, all the others are 60 or 61, two of them got me by just a couple of seconds. Phooey. But the team was either first or second so that is something.

I don't know why some days you just suck. Fortunately there are some good days too.

Note

So I figured it made sense to find out just what the federation's position was regarding GPS units. I wrote the following to Clare Durand, chair of the Rules Committee --

Clare,

Perhaps you can clarify what the current rules actually mean. Specifically, can I carry a Forerunner 305 if I am using it only as a stopwatch and a heart rate monitor while I am on the course? I believe I can.

And secondly, if the answer to the first question is Yes, can a club organizing a U.S. Championship ban the carrying of a Forerunner 305 on
its own, under threat of disqualification?

I hope you can give the federations position as the rules currently stand.

Thanks,

Peter

==============

And she wrote back --

Peter,

The official rules interpretation that was given to sanctioning and to the
clubs involved (by me) is as follows:

The rules prohibit the use of such devices for navigation. The rules ask event organizers to be responsible for enforcement. Therefore, while it is not required to ban such devices from the course, organizers are within their authority to do so as a method of rule enforcement for their event.

Obviously, the discussion this has engendered may result in a change in the rules, but it is unclear how soon, or what that change might be. The last time this came up the board discussed it, but agreed not to make a rule change. At the moment, discussion within rules committee leans heavily in favor of adopting something like the IOF rule.

Clare Durand

====================

And I responeded --

Hi Clare,

Thanks for the explanation.

Not that I agree. I think it's overkill. Taking something fun out of the
sport doesn't seem like progress towards any of our goals.

Since you wrote to me privately, I think I should ask for permission to
post your response on my AP log. OK?

Thanks,

Peter

=================

And her last was --

Yes you may post this

================

So that seems to be the official word. I started off thinking this was silly. I now think it is absurd, at least in part.

By that I mean that there may be situations under which such a ban is proper, and those would be situations where the event is of great importance. Hence the IOF ban applied to events it sanctions.

But to think that the same ban is applied to a bunch of old guys in pajamas at a second-rate championships who wouldn't cheat even if they could figure out how to do it and are carrying the GPS devices so they can figure out afterwards where they hell they went....

Can someone please explain to me what good this ban does, and how this does anything to move us along the path to our goals? Because it makes no sense to me. And it takes away something that is fun.

And for those who say I should just go get a logger, one of the beauties of the 305, and Attackpoint, and QuickRoute, is that it all works so nicely together. And it seems so foolish to have to try to rig up some other system.

Note

Big toe is now quite purple, at least from the last joint out to the end. Am hoping to race on Sunday, so it had best hurry along with the mending process.

1 PM

trail running 56:19 intensity: (57 @1) + (50 @2) + (43:21 @3) + (10:44 @4) + (27 @5) 5.96 mi (9:27 / mi) +971ft 8:11 / mi
ahr:147 max:163 weight:141lbs shoes: pegasus #2

"13 hills" loop on the ridge, working reasonably hard, time is slowly coming down. Only problem was one crash, avoiding a dog, not really the dog's fault, it was friendly enough, but in going by it, and I was moving pretty quickly, I didn't see a little root stub and nailed it dead center with my bionic big toe. Ouchie, ouchie, as someone else might say.

Hurt pretty good, but I don't think I've done any major damge. Didn't rip it off completely, nothing seems broken, just swollen and sore. Certainly nothing to keep from finishing the run.

But feeling quite stupid.

Monday Feb 20, 2012 #

Note

Saw this on the website for the classic champs in NC --

"Use of GPS Equipment: GPS units with a display may not be used by competitors in Championship Classes. GPS recording only devices are permitted."

Anyone know why? Seems exceedingly silly.

Back roads to Whately and South Deerfield. Tired at the start, tired at the end, tired in between.

Saturday Feb 18, 2012 #

8 AM

road running 18:29 intensity: (32 @1) + (4:40 @2) + (10:46 @3) + (2:12 @4) + (19 @5) 2.06 mi (8:58 / mi) +79ft 8:40 / mi
ahr:130 max:155 shoes: pegasus #2

Down to Forest Park for another go at the 10K, only because it was good weather again, about 40F and bare pavement. Usual warm-up.

road running race 44:34 intensity: (11 @1) + (16 @2) + (1:38 @3) + (23:16 @4) + (19:13 @5) 6.21 mi (7:11 / mi) +440ft 6:44 / mi
ahr:160 max:166 shoes: x-talon 212 #2

Good effort, legs just not quite a quick as a couple of weeks ago (44:22) I guess. Felt like I was trying just as hard. It might help if I was a little less roly-poly.

road running 2:35 intensity: (35 @2) + (2:00 @3) 0.24 mi (10:46 / mi) +240ft 5:32 / mi
ahr:136 max:146 shoes: x-talon 212 #2

And then back to the car and quickly off to work, just in time for my first appointment. And glad to have gotten a good workout in.

At the Smith indoor track. A couple of miles worm-up.

track 13:46 intensity: (13 @1) + (53 @2) + (7:10 @3) + (3:38 @4) + (1:52 @5) 1.38 mi (10:01 / mi)
ahr:149 max:168 shoes: pegasus #2

Lacking in something this morning (energy, discipline, fortitude?). I'd thought about a dozen quarters, quickly revised it to 8 after I started running, then bagged that idea. Ended up with 4x400 on a 2:30 cycle, and then 3x200 on a 1:15 cycle. At least I was putting out, just the usual situation these days, working hard and going slow.

I'd also thought about doing a few quarters and then seeing what I could run a mile or a 3000 in, but that quickly lost all appeal and clearly wasn't going to happen. But one of these weeks I need to test myself.

400s: 98.0, 92.5, 91.1, 90.0
200s: 42:8, 42:5, 41:8

On the plus side, the basic goal today was running a little faster at shorter distances, and that was done.

track 15:49 intensity: (10 @1) + (36 @2) + (15:01 @3) + (2 @4) 2.0 mi (7:54 / mi)
ahr:149 max:155 shoes: pegasus #2

And then 2 miles afterwards at a steady pace. Reasonably boring, only one on the track, should have put the headphones on.

And then a shower ( not supposed to but what the hell) and off to work.

ahr:138 max:158 rhr:52 weight:140.5lbs shoes: pegasus #2

Mostly trails on the ridge. Almost skipped today but it was too nice out. Ice is just about all gone.

Tuesday Feb 14, 2012 #

trail running 46:28 [3] 5.65 mi (8:13 / mi)
weight:140lbs shoes: pegasus #2

Lover's Lane loop, decent effort. Left my 305 at the office, guess I've gotten used to it as I quite missed it, despite its inaccuracies.... :-)

Interesting show from Freakonomics about commitment devices (like last year's L&F was intended to be), and why they usually fail (see last year's L&F).

Longest segment was on domestic violence (yes, it tied in with commitment devices). What caught my attention was the statistics on domestic violence, big numbers.

Just think how much worse it will become as same-sex marriage spreads and destroys even more traditional marriages. Or so they say. Seems like traditional marriages have always been falling apart with no outside help needed.

13-hills loop on Greenfield Ridge. Almost no ice left. Steady wind out of the west, but the route is mostly on the lee side of the ridge, so quite pleasant.

Listening to This American Life from a week or two ago, piece about how Alabama is dealing with immigration. I can't say I'm in a rush to go to Alabama again, or Arizona. Like everyone else, I'm here thanks to immigration, in my case just one generation back, but somehow it has become this terrible thing. I've imagined that seemingly more peaceful places like Canada or New Zealand or Australia (sticking for now with countries speaking some form of English) don't have such demagogary around the issue, but maybe I'm just unaware.

Sunday Feb 12, 2012 #

road running 1:25:20 intensity: (18 @1) + (4:15 @2) + (1:11:14 @3) + (7:34 @4) + (1:59 @5) 9.96 mi (8:34 / mi) +1414ft 7:33 / mi
ahr:144 max:171 rhr:53 weight:140.5lbs shoes: pegasus #2

Around both Sugarloafs, plus a detour towards the end to go up south Sugarloaf, which was a bit of a struggle. Low 20s and a brisk NW wind, felt cold because we've had so little cold weather and not used to it. But at least I remembered at the last moment to take my warmer gloves.

Legs felt good to start, and beat by the end. Ten miles is still a long run.

Saturday Feb 11, 2012 #

9 AM

road running 39:32 intensity: (20 @1) + (3:07 @2) + (36:05 @3) 4.54 mi (8:42 / mi) +610ft 7:43 / mi
ahr:137 max:151 rhr:54 weight:140.5lbs shoes: pegasus #2

First snowstorm in quite a while, certainly at least half an inch, maybe as much as an inch in some places. What a winter.

Short run around Greenfield. Felt a bit tired and achy so this seemed like just the right amount of effort. Maybe longer tomorrow, see how I feel, not supposed to be a strenuous week.

Nice to get it done with.
And in other news, the Western Mass 5 Day (see here and here) is pleased to announce that event #3, the sprint late Saturday afternoon, will be a joint venture with the UMass philosophy department. And thanks to them we have permission!

Thursday Feb 9, 2012 #

Off to the Smith track at 6:30, sky was lightening and the full moon about to set. Passed the turn to River Road, considered waiting 30 minutes and joining Ali for a rollerski session, but then I don't have any rollerskis, don't know how to rollerski, and it would ruin her workout because she would be laughing so hard.

So onward to the track. A couple of miles warm-up.

track 30:01 intensity: (29 @1) + (4:47 @2) + (9:54 @3) + (6:10 @4) + (8:41 @5) 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
ahr:149 max:172 shoes: pegasus #2

6 x 800 on a 5-minute cycle. Was figuring to do about 3:20 but they slowly got quicker as the heart rate slowly inched higher. Took the usual bit of mental fortitude to stick to the plan, but never had any thoughts of stopping early.

3:26, 3:21, 3:19, 3:17, 3:15, 3:09.

track 4:22 intensity: (25 @2) + (3:57 @3) 0.5 mi (8:44 / mi)
ahr:142 max:149 shoes: pegasus #2

And a slow half-mile and then off to work.

Wednesday Feb 8, 2012 #

Note

Very excellent celebration with the ski-O stars -- first-class food and even a bottle of champagne, plus good tales and laughs.

We are so lucky.

1 PM

trail running 58:45 intensity: (55 @1) + (6:28 @2) + (50:27 @3) + (55 @4) 5.97 mi (9:50 / mi) +1040ft 8:27 / mi

Trails on Greenfield ridge, still ice in a few places but mostly fine.

ahr:132 max:147 shoes: pegasus #2

Wasn't planning on running today, and perhaps shouldn't, but it was such a nice day, upper 40s and sunny, that it seemed necessary to get out just for mental health. Legs a little tired but not sore.

Listened to music by Philip Glass the whole way.

No, no, just kidding....

Sunday Feb 5, 2012 #

11 AM

road running 1:23:54 intensity: (1:03 @1) + (5:57 @2) + (1:16:42 @3) + (12 @4) 10.09 mi (8:19 / mi) +1207ft 7:28 / mi
ahr:139 max:155 rhr:54 weight:139.5lbs shoes: pegasus #2

Up to Montague and back. Pleasant day, about 30F. Legs were tired.

Listen to a couple of Fresh Air shows, including a short interview with Philip Glass. How can what seems to be an interesting person compose such awful music?

Saturday Feb 4, 2012 #

ahr:128 max:161 weight:140lbs shoes: pegasus #2

Back down to Forest Park. Another good warm-up, couple of miles including a couple of fast 200s to get the heart going.

Nice to see Clint there. No sign of Phil or Charlie, and George and Lyn are playing in the powder out west.

road running race 44:22 intensity: (11 @1) + (11 @2) + (1:41 @3) + (10:17 @4) + (32:02 @5) 6.21 mi (7:08 / mi) +489ft 6:39 / mi
ahr:162 max:167 shoes: x-talon 212 #2

10K this week. And once again awesome running conditions -- bare pavement, temps about 40F, bit of a breeze out of the NW, running in shorts and one LS shirt, just right.

Did 45:34 4 weeks ago, age-67 record was 45:14 by Roland Cormier, figured I should be able to do that. Based on last week's 5K something around 44:15 ought to be possible. And in fact it was, 44:21. :-)

Just a good solid effort, pretty even splits if you allow for the changes in elevation and wind, and not totally killing myself (not that I could have gone much faster, but it didn't feel awful the whole time). Kind of race that puts a smile on your face, both during and after.

So now I don't have to go back any more this winter, though the series is almost over, ends the last Saturday in February. I changed my work schedule this year, going to work late morning on Saturday and staying later so I could make these races if the conditions were good, or otherwise just run early. Seems to have been a good idea.

road running 11:07 intensity: (6 @1) + (1:16 @2) + (9:45 @3) 1.07 mi (10:23 / mi) +213ft 8:44 / mi
ahr:135 max:141

Bit of a slow cooldown. Legs were tired. And then off to work.

Thursday Feb 2, 2012 #

7 am at the Smith indoor track with Phil. Woke up at 3:30 and didn't get back to sleep, so it may be a long day today....

Two miles warm-up with a couple of faster bits. Didn't feel great, but right foot felt good enough to continue.

track 25:01 intensity: (41 @1) + (3:57 @2) + (8:22 @3) + (5:39 @4) + (6:22 @5) 2.5 mi (10:00 / mi)
ahr:148 max:170 shoes: pegasus #2

5x800 with about 1:45 rest (on a 5-minute cycle). Better than I expected, thought 3:20 would be the best, turned out to be just about the worst.

But it was a difficult workout psychologically, at least at the end. With Phil there is always a good chance that the number of reps will be less than what is announced at the start. I don't think it has even been more. But there is a first for everything.

The plan was four. After two Phil said he would skip the next one as he was in need of a pit stop. So I did the third one a little faster on my own. And then he came back, wanted to know what I'd done, so he pushed it on the fourth one to do the same as my third. At which point I thought I was done.

But he still intended to do four, and honor wouldn't allow me to abandon him, and honor wouldn't allow us to slow down. So the last one was reasonalby unpleasant.

But it got done.

3:22, 3:19, 3:15, 3:15, 3:13

track 8:30 intensity: (44 @2) + (7:46 @3) 1.0 mi (8:30 / mi)
ahr:144 max:151 shoes: pegasus #2

And a slower mile, legs quite tired.

But there was, as always on such occasions, the fine feeling afterwards that it was 8 am and a good workout was already in the books. :-)

Note

A few twinges in one foot after yesterday (felt something just as I was finishing), so nothing today just to be cautious. Too bad, was 50 outside.
