road running 41:57 [3] 4.91 mi (8:33 / mi) +144ft 8:19 / mi
weight:134lbs shoes: Brooks something-or-others

A little chilly, 20F and breezy out of the west, but the sun was out so it was rather pleasant. Especially when I was not heading west. And a little of the ice and snow was melting. Keep it up at this pace and it will all be gone by July.

Listened to the first few chapters of Huckleberry Finn. Not quite sure why, but saw it available for free and though I would give it a try.

I had a client about a week ago, really nice woman, husband played in the NFL some decades ago, and we were talking about cars, and she was about to spring for a new Subaru, and I told her how much I liked mine. And she asked if there was some referral program, and I looked in my wallet and there was still a card from the guy I bought mine from, very competent fellow, and on the back was a place to fill out name and address. So I did. And yesterday I got a check for $50.

My only concern is whether I am now responsible if it turns out she really doesn't like the car. Maybe I'll just send her the $50 and take myself off the hook.

"Entertainment" from a new source, something called the Adam Carolla Show that I found on iTunes in their list of popular podcasts. So why not give it a try though I knew not what it was.

Turned out to be a radio show in California (I think), where some guy, I assume it is Adam, and a sidekick or two talk about whatever, and use a bunch of words that are usually bleeped, and have a guest or three, and maybe a few people calling in. And maybe some other stuff too, because after listening for an hour there was still another half hour or so to go.

But the fact is I listened for an hour without changing channels. Though perhaps that is a low threshold as on a cold and windy day changing channels requires off with the gloves, and I didn't really need that.

But it was OK. Not so good as to recommend it to anyone else, but not so bad to steer you away, unless you have a thing about four-letter words, in which case you won't last more than a minute or two.

And it kept my interest for an hour of running around on the streets of Greenfield, which is not a bad thing. Especially when otherwise all I would have had to do was focus on how lacking in zip my legs were. But as it was, enjoyed the hour, and didn't think about taxes even once.

road running 56:47 [3] 6.17 mi (9:12 / mi) +437ft 8:37 / mi
rhr:50 weight:134.5lbs shoes: Brooks something-or-others

Cold today, though not really, just mid-20s, but it sure seemed cold as it was very windy. Figured I would try the trails on the ridge as they are nicely sheltered from a west wind, but they were terrible, frozen footprints. Rest was actually fine, just cold thumbs as I wore my lighter gloves and that wasn't enough.

This American Life. Was ready to swear off them forever, but then the 4th of 5 stories was excellent, kind of stuff I remember in the past, so I guess I won't delete all the shows on my ipod that I haven't yet listened to.

And then back into the gym for a quick shower. Sit down at a table near the front desk to take off my shoes so I don't track sand and/or snow/ice into the locker room. Doing that, and trying to get my thumbs to stop hurting, so I am not really paying attention when the young women at the desk asks me to check in.

At first I don't really understand. I checked in an hour ago, never had to check in when I came back from a run. But it seems she wants me to check in again. I sort of brush her off and head in to take a shower.

In the process of which I think a little and decide I've not been very friendly, so I resolve to be more so on the way out. And in fact maybe this will be the opportunity to strike up an acquaintance, always useful to have when you're dealing with the same people every day. The woman there when I first come in has been there for years and we're good friends, but this is a new one, I've seen her a few times, but no communication. And it's always nicer if you know the people (and from their perspective, it should be part of good customer service).

So I try to make amends, check in again so she knows I'm legit, ask in a friendly way if it's really needed, I come there every day to run, check in when I get there, and so on, never had to check in at the end of my run. And get in return a rather cold statement that it's the rule. WTF.

I see a lot of old people (and a lot of very old people) and so few seem to have a sense of humor, as if at some point in life they had a character transplant and the misery of getting old just drained all the joy out of life. Not true for everyone, I know, and others never had any joy to start with, but very often true.

Is that where I am heading?

I mean, This American Life is no longer any good. A simple exchange with a menial worker takes a smile right off your face. And certainly my occasional perusal of the discussion threads on AP leave me with no desire to participate. Have I already had the transplant without realizing it?

Starting to wonder.... :-)

track 21:10 [2] 3.8 km (5:34 / km)
weight:135.5lbs shoes: Brooks something-or-others

At the indoor track with Dave. Legs felt totally dead, clearly they weren't used to the softer footing yesterday. Slowly got better as the laps went by.

track 21:23 [4] 4.8 km (4:27 / km)
shoes: Brooks something-or-others

Our usual, 3 x 1600 on a 10-minute cycle. Very low expectations. Legs still feeling off, but the warm-up certainly helped.

First two in 7:15 and 7:13. Certainly not pushing the pace, and not out of breath at the end, just no zip. A couple minutes extra rest before the last one as Dave had to take a pit stop, so figured we had to go a little faster on it, at least at the end. 6:55 for it, 3:33 and 3:22, so that was a little better. And I was working hard the last couple of laps. Felt nice, actually.

track 5:25 [3] 1.0 km (5:25 / km)
shoes: Brooks something-or-others

And a little bit slower to makes 6 miles for the morning. And then chatted with Dave for a while about dysfunctional families (our own), had to hustle a bit to get to work on time.

Always good to get this done. And thanks to Gail I got there -- the alarm is very loud but I was sleeping right through it until she started shaking me.

snowmobile trail running 48:10 [3] 4.35 mi (11:04 / mi) +699ft 9:37 / mi
shoes: pegasus #3

First time this year (and maybe first time in two or three years) out on the snowmobile trails. Reasonably OK conditions, mix of a little icy and a little soft depending on the exposure. Clearly I'm not used to running on them, so it was slow going, but at least I managed to keep running up the hills.

But it was lovely out, and I was reminded of one of the primary reasons that makes these trails so nice -- on a day that was very windy, you get in the woods and the wind pretty much disappears. Not completely, of course, especially when you're going through notches, but it stops making things unpleasant.

And it is a good preparation for getting back to woods running.

Back roads in Leverett, including once over Cave Hill in each direction.

Just plodding along, enjoying listening to "Selected Shorts," first an hour listening to a Hunter S. Thompson retrospective, including readings from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, then a story, fictional one assumes, by John Sayles about an anarchists convention. Both wonderful.

road running 13:09 [3] 1.42 mi (9:16 / mi) +108ft 8:38 / mi
weight:135.5lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Beautiful day. Went down to Forest Park for the last race of the winter series, 10K this time, even though I expected the running conditions would not be the best. But it seemed to make more sense to do a hard effort there than at tomorrow's 10-miler in Amherst, a course that has often beaten me up pretty badly.

A modest warm-up. Conditions were fine in places, bare pavement, and terrible in others, mostly ice, a little slush.

road running race 49:12 [4] 6.21 mi (7:55 / mi) +225ft 7:40 / mi
shoes: pegasus #3

Time is lousy but 2+ miles were on ice, with the occasional ice pothole or flooded section thrown in. Section along Washington Street was truly awful. But no falls, only a couple of slight slips, just have to run as flat-footed as possible.

Splits as wacky as the 305 was having an off day, measured 6.36 for the 6.21 course.

Legs not too bad, felt like I was working hard but still holding back a little.

road running 8:08 [2] 0.74 mi (10:59 / mi) +163ft 9:06 / mi
shoes: pegasus #3

Up the hill to the car, then back down to find Seth, then back to the car to pass on a ticket for Wednesday's game. And then off to work.

treadmill 27:28 [3] 3.0 mi (9:09 / mi)

Short outing on the treadmill, cold rain outside, also not much time as I had to go shopping for Valentine's Day first. The run was OK, the shopping only moderately successful.

road running 58:58 [3] 7.02 mi (8:24 / mi) +228ft 8:09 / mi

Nice day, mid-40s and the sun out when I started if not when I finished, first time outside in shorts in a while. The downside was a lot of puddles, but that's still a reasonable trade-off.

7 AM

track 19:45 [3] 3.8 km (5:12 / km)
weight:136lbs shoes: pegasus #3

At the indoor track, by myself this time. What is now the usual warm-up, a couple of miles with a few faster bits at the end.

track 6:31 [4] 1.6 km (4:04 / km)
shoes: pegasus #3

And then more "warm-up," 4 x 400 on a 2:30 cycle. 1:40, 1:38, 1:36, 1:37.

track race 13:00 [4] 3.0 km (4:20 / km)
shoes: pegasus #3

And then trying a 3K. I think last time I did this was a month or two ago with Phil, 13:18. Aiming for 13:00 this time, was just a little off the pace for the first couple of kilometers so had to push it at the end. Reasonably satisfying.

1:47, 1:46, 1:46, 1:45, 1:44, 1:44, 1:42, 46. Kilometers in 4:25, 4:23, 4:12.

track 6:19 [2] 1.2 km (5:16 / km)
shoes: pegasus #3

And then a bit more slower. And done for the day. :-)

Side streets in Greenfield. Beautiful day, sunny, mid-20s, though the wind kept it from feeling downright toasty.

Trying out a new podcast series, Selected Shorts, short stories read by people with good voices. Enjoyed what I listened to today, about a couple building a Victorian house, kept my attention the whole time and ended just as I did. So nice to have good entertainment.

road running 1:27:12 [3] 10.34 mi (8:26 / mi) +720ft 7:55 / mi

Trying out another loop in CT on the way home, this one more in George and Lyn's neighborhood. Quite pleasant, no bad hills, though most of miles 7 and 8 were right into the brisk NW breeze.

Slowly starting to stretch out the longer runs. Just have to keep at it. Was reading up yesterday evening on the marathon in Burlington over Memorial Day weekend, need to do something if I want to run Boston in 2015, and that seems like a reasonable possibility.

Two nice interviews to pass the time, one with comedians Key and Peele, very entertaining, the other with Angelica Houston, also interesting.

road running 56:35 [3] 6.42 mi (8:49 / mi) +208ft 8:33 / mi

Roads and sidewalks, quite a bit of ice, covered by a light dusting of new snow, so had to pay attention. But no falls, nor anything even close.

treadmill 33:41 [3] 4.0 mi (8:25 / mi)
weight:135lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Very little time today so just went on the treadmill, included a couple of miles a little faster, 8:00 and 7:30.

A lot of wasted time this morning dealing with a balky printer. :-(

So dispatched someone to Staples to get another one. Amazing what you can get for $150 -- 40 pages a minute, really hums. :-)

Note

A lot of shoveling last night and this morning. Nice that the arms and back still feel fine. Been doing shoulder exercises for a year and core exercises for the last month (better than nothing), and it must help.

road running 30:21 [3] 3.09 mi (9:49 / mi) +41ft 9:42 / mi

I had intended to do a short effort on the treadmill because it was snowing pretty hard outside, but then I figured it might actually be fun outside, so out I went. Fairly crappy conditions, poor traction, 4 or 5 inches of snow (but I was running in wheel tracks most of the time), snowing hard. But also no wind and almost no cars and very pleasant.

Except it was also rather hard work, slipping all the time, could tell I haven't been running on soft ground at all. So 30 minutes was enough.

road running 1:01:51 [3] 7.23 mi (8:33 / mi) +197ft 8:20 / mi

Roads in Greenfield, just putting in a few miles, listening first to old FA interviews with Ringo and then Paul, fun, and then to a chat about the sad state of internet access in the USA. Is it really true that internet service in Stockholm is 17 times faster and 1/4 the price compared to New York?

Nice to get rid of another bag of sugar, actually 1.6 since I started.

Tuesday Feb 11, 2014 #

track 19:53 [2] 3.7 km (5:22 / km)
weight:136lbs shoes: pegasus #3

At the indoor track with Dave, usual warm-up. A littler earlier start than usual, 6:45, as he had to be done by 7:45.

track 21:21 [4] 4.8 km (4:27 / km)
shoes: pegasus #3

Same workout as last week, 3 x 1600 on a 10-minute cycle, at virtually the same pace -- 7:19, 7:08, 6:54. But felt tired this time, legs not real bad but not light either. But still only really working hard on the last couple laps of the last one. Which is good.

track 8:36 [3] 1.6 km (5:22 / km)
shoes: pegasus #3

And then an easy mile.

Chatted afterwards with a guy who had been running much much faster. Nice guy, used to run for UMass, 4:20 miler. Now runs for a local club, Western Mass Distance Project, a bunch of the faster runners living out here in the valley. I asked what they had in the way of sponsorship. Free shoes from New Balance -- and he showed me a pair of spikes that weighed 3.8 ounces each -- but that was probably only because they knew a guy who worked there. And not much else, just an occasional free race entry.

Not easy to keep up a serious running career unless you are at the absolute top.

road running 41:13 [3] 4.55 mi (9:03 / mi) +257ft 8:36 / mi
rhr:50 weight:135.5lbs shoes: pegasus #3

One of my standard loops in town, though maybe a mile and a half or so is now soft-packed snow. Glad it was pretty flat, as my legs aren't used to it.

Another fine interview from Fresh Air, this time about the chemical leak into the West Virginia water supply month, the interview being with a reporter who covered. A pleasure to listen to.

The guy being interviewed has been writing about environmental stuff in West Virginia for over 20 years, and he sure came off well -- informed, well spoken, arguments well presented -- left you not only with the sense the guy really knew what he was talking about, but also the feeling that he would be a really good role model for anyone looking for how rewarding a job well done can be.

At the end, he was asked, under the assumption that he had had many offers over the years to work for bigger media outfits in bigger markets, why he hadn't moved on. The answer, short and simple -- here I can cover the things I think are important, here I get support from my editors, and here is where my home and my roots are.

The only question I wish had been asked concerned the name of the company that owned the chemical tanks that leaked -- Freedom Industries. I assume the name was chosen to imply freedom from taxes, freedom from regulation, and now freedom from much in the way of responsibility or liability. There has to be a story there.

Started from one of Charlie's often-used spots, the parking by the Farmington River, though I'm not sure he's ever done the loop I picked out. Had a few hills. But the legs felt a lot better today and I chugged up all of them, though not without some effort. Good week.

And seems I just missed Charlie -- he was parked at the same place starting a run at about the same time.

The first 50 to 100 yards really felt good, legs felt light. And then, who knows, all downhill. Even had to walk a couple of minutes up the hill towards the end, felt like a full bonk, even though after the top of the hill I seemed to get a little energy back. Strange run.

Sunny, upper teens, had too much clothing on, certainly didn't need the clown pants. Pretty sure that had something to do with how I was feeling.

Some ice in places, but it all had pretty good traction, no problems.

track 20:11 [3] 3.8 km (5:19 / km)

Indoor track with Dave. Good warm-up with several faster bits at the end.

track 21:23 [4] 4.8 km (4:27 / km)
shoes: pegasus #3

Dave wanted to do some miles but was also feeling very pessimistic about how that would turn out. So after a bit of discussion we settled on 3 on a 10-minute cycle, do the first one at 7:20 or thereabouts and try and do the next couple faster. Since that's a much better way than trying to do the first one too fast and really suffering.

Worked like a charm. 7:18, 7:08, 6:55. Only the last one got me breathing harder, and just on the last couple laps, so clearly a better time was possible. We'll see. In the meantime this was an excellent workout.

track 5:34 [2] 1.0 km (5:34 / km)

And then a few more laps, legs feeling heavy. And then off to work. Always nice to be done early.

treadmill 27:23 [3] 3.0 mi (9:08 / mi)
weight:138lbs shoes: pegasus #3

Short and easy outing on the treadmill, as I didn't have much time and didn't feel like thrashing around in the snow outside. Listened to an interview done last Thursday with a supposedly acclaimed sports analyst, three days before the Super Bowl, in which he bemoaned using a northern outdoor site because of the unfairness for one team or the other of playing in cold weather (maybe he should have first looked at the weather forecast), and then predicted a close game with Denver winning. I guess we're all entitled to off days.

And a bunch of shoveling, but it's winter....

And an evening trip to the Mullins Center for a satisfying game.

Nice day and a storm coming tomorrow, so ran a little longer and harder today. Not quite race pace.... Need to start going a little farther, but it would be quite sufficient a minute a mile slower, since that is the eventual goal pace.

Once again disappointed by TAL, them this time was "At the beach." About to give up on them.

trail running 38:36 [3] 4.01 mi (9:38 / mi) +375ft 8:51 / mi

At Sessions, mostly on the main trail. Thought it might be snow/ice-free, though as I was getting near it seemed like it might be mostly lousy. Turned out to be about 1/3 snow/ice/slop and the rest bare ground, just fine actually.

Not much energy today.

Listening to a few stories from The Moth. As part of one story, obviously told by a guy a bit on in age (like me), was how two of the main activities at some point in his youth had been watching professional wrestling on TV, followed up by watching women's roller derby. And then once going to see the pro wrestlers live with his grandma.

Which brought back memories long forgotten, namely that I too spent some time in my youth watching both pro wrestling and women's roller derby on TV, obviously enchanted by both. And how once, just once, my mom took my younger brother and me down to Bridgeport to watch pro wrestling. And that it was a lot of fun, at least for us, though perhaps not for my mom as we only went once.

And if you happened to hear the story on The Moth, no, my mom did not stick her hat pin into the butt of one of the wrestlers.... :-)

road running 14:55 [3] 1.69 mi (8:50 / mi) +85ft 8:25 / mi

Time for another visit to Forest Park in Springfield, 5K this week. Felt quite tired this morning, had run every day this week, but I had decided yesterday evening to go, so off I went.

Usual warm-up. Yup, the legs felt tired. But it was a good day for running, mid-30s, no wind, bare pavement, and shorts. :-)

road running race 22:48 [4] 3.11 mi (7:20 / mi) +103ft 7:06 / mi
rhr:52 weight:138.5lbs shoes: pegasus #3

So the race was a very pleasant surprise.

Felt exhausted at the top of the first hill, spent the next few minutes just trying to relax and get my breathing back. And then just sauntering along for a while. Looked like my time might be a few seconds faster than last time a month ago (23:39 I think).

Then just before two miles Dave Martula pulled up next to me, and then Seth was there two. I expected them to gradually pull ahead, but I guess I got a little motivated, so we ran together for a half mile or so and then much to my surprise I pulled back ahead of them. And so it was to the finish.

Good hard effort, max effort at the end. 7:40, 7:26, 6:55, 47. Nice to be pleased rather than discouraged with a result.

road running 18:23 [2] 1.97 mi (9:20 / mi) +86ft 8:58 / mi
shoes: pegasus #3

Ran with Seth a bit afterwards on his way home, turned back partway. Easy pace, he was feeling tired too.

road running 5:08 [2] 0.56 mi (9:10 / mi) +65ft 8:16 / mi
shoes: pegasus #3

And then, since I had forgotten to turn in my number, back down the hill and then up again.

Good day, and a good week of training.
