Orienteering race 58:12 [5] 6.2 km (9:23 / km) +170m 8:15 / km

1. Same starting location as Saturday with a similar first control, so I tried a different, easier route. Followed a trail south until a sharp turn, and then ran east toward another trail. Followed the second as it paralleled a creek for a short while, but left it and crossed the creek about halfway to the point. Followed the stream east and found the control.

2. Ran back to the trail and followed it south and then east. At a large intersection, I left it and moved southeast into a densely wooded area until the land started to slope down. Moved to the deepest part of the shallow reentrant and got my point.

3. Form 2, I headed east. Found and followed a ravine to a creek. Followed the creek south until I hit a large ravine which I followed to 3.

4. Moved south from 3 pasta road and down into a valley where I hit a trail. Ran along the trail for a while until it hit a creek and doubled back east. I followed the creek east until it disappeared. From there, I stayed south of a small hill and tried to remain as low in the saddle formed by it and a larger hill to he south as possible. The land here was very flat and consequently I moved much slower trying to get a precise idea of where I was. Eventually I ran into a small gulley which led straight to point 4.

5. 4 was near a small creek, which I moved east of and then headed south along it. I counted gulleys and reentrants until I hit 5.

6. From 5 I ran northwest to a trail and followed that trail until it turned south. At that point I moved into a nearby reentrant and ran north. As the reentrant turned east, I climbed out of into into one just north of it. I ran up that reentrant and got 6.

7. Ran east from 7 to a trail. Took the trail southwest to a road and took the road south until I passed a river. From there, I shot west across the woods toward 7.

8. Shot straight north to a creek. Ran up the creek until the surrounding floodplains ended. At that point, i climbed up onto the west side of the valley and contoured to 8.

9. From 8 I ran north along the river until I ran into a small stream coming from the northwest. I followed that stream past a power line and kept going until it separated into several small gulleys. I stuck to the largest gulley for a bit, and headed northeast to the small one which led to 9 when it came in sight.

10. From 9 I headed to the top of a nearby hill and shot east. Ended up going northeast, but corrected once I noticed the gulleys were arranged differently than what I was expecting. Shot south and hit 10.

11. From 10 I headed south to a large ravine and followed it for a ways until a river came into view. Headed south toward a trail and took that to 11.

Orienteering race 1:04:31 [5] 6.7 km (9:38 / km) +240m 8:10 / km

12 Controls, no major issues, but choices could have been better:

1. Started off a little disoriented and ended up running up and over a hill I probably should have avoided, went smoothly after that, though.

2. Moved straight north from 1, and started to shift east after I crested a small ridge, ended up hitting the creek 2 was on a bit early.

3. Straightforward, ran down the creek and counted off gulleys, hit it right when I thought I would.

4. Stayed north of the creek until i merged with a river, hopped a few reentrants and ended up on the main road. Ran north a bit to a cleared out area and then moved west. Found and followed a ravine that led me southwest toward a creek. Moved down along the creek until i found a triangular patch of thick vegetation with a gulley running through it. Followed the gulley to 4.

5. Moved north from 4 until i hit a trail, followed it north until it hit a smal creek, followed the creek to 5.

6. Very close by, so i just shot as straight an azimuth as I could.

7. Moved straight south from 6, passed to trails and hit a third. Followed the third for a bit as it went around the hill 7 was on. When I was north of 7, I left the trail, and kept track of a large, flat section of the hill to keep track of where I was until I hit 7.

8. Left 7 heading south aiming for a raving to take me close to 8, but changed my mind midway through. Ended up moving southwest through thick vegetation toward a trail instead. Ran along the trail until it hit 8's ravine, then took the ravine to 8.

9. Ran downhill to a marshy flatland, then turned north. Ran north until i found some small watercourses and followed those northeast until they ceased to exist. I started counting off specific ravines, eventually found 9's.

10. Moved east from 9, across a swampy area and through some thick vegetation I probably should have avoided. The reentrants near 10 messed me up and I ended up making a minor parallel error before quickly readjusting. Realized later that I could have just a taken a trail to the point and felt stupid.

11. Followed a trail east until it u-turned, then followed a ravine to the main road. Turned off at a trail head and went south. A ravine that led to 11 paralleled the trail for a while and I planned on only leaving the trail when the ravine turned away from it, but the ravine was barely visible even at its closest point, so I moved into the woods early and the thick vegetation slowed me down. Followed the ravine as best I could and caught 11.

12. From 11, I moved south along a creek until it hit a trail, then followed the trail east until i hit a segment that was closed for erosion control. I left the trail and headed into some dense forest, which slowed me down. I counted off one reentrant, but the low visibility meant that by the time I hit the bottom of 12's ravine, I was unsure of were exactly I was. I moved north up the ravine anyways and found the point.
