Running 11:39 [3] 1.55 km (7:31 / km) +48m 6:31 / km

Orienteering race 53:35 [3] 6.67 km (8:02 / km) +249m 6:46 / km

Big 5 O, Day 4, London Plantation. M50, 6.1km, 200m. 2nd.

Technically very good today, if a little cautious. When I downloaded I had no punch for #4, but I certainly punched it, as my EMIT backup card prooved.

Beaten again by the Swede Robert Palm, who must also have had a good run today.

Running race 24:20 [3] 5.07 km (4:48 / km) +70m 4:29 / km

Graskop Parkrun.

Another parkrun in the clouds! Went back later with Lesley once the cloud had lifted to see the great views.

Running 9:17 [3] 1.3 km (7:10 / km)

Orienteering 56:12 [3] 8.3 km (6:46 / km) +137m 6:15 / km

Big 5 O, Day 3, Waterval South. M50, 7.1km, 120m. 2nd.

Lost some time at #1 (30s) and more time at #3 (2.5m) with bearings that weren't accurate enough. After that I was going well, and good through the two rocky sections. Careless miss on #21 (90s) when I didn't spot that the flag wouldn't be on the east end of the feature, so I ran away and looked elsewhere before coming back.

Happy to be 2nd today, but still can't get a clean enough run for a win.

Running 4:40 [3] 0.5 km (9:16 / km)

Orienteering race 29:12 [3] 4.64 km (6:18 / km) +84m 5:47 / km

Big 5 O, Day 2, Waterval North. M50, 4.1km, 70m, 3rd.

The forest was very open and fast running, though a bit soft underfoot. The rocking section at the end was just like day 1.

Pretty happy with my run, until the annoying time loss at #10. I went through the drinks point and then found the clearing it was in, but couldn't see the flag. Because it was an indistinct clearing I kept looking for other clearings, and eventually found a control on a rootstock (though by now I was far too far from the drinks point). Back to the same clearing I'd already looked in, and this time I found the flag on the ground, with the punch stake no more than 30cm high. As I punched it went another couple of cm lower into the ground. Grrrr!

3rd again, and again I could have won the race without this time loss.

Back to the same area (but the southern half) for day 3.

Event: Big 5 O Week

11 AM

Running 13:01 [3] 1.62 km (8:02 / km) +47m 7:01 / km

Orienteering race 42:59 [3] 6.05 km (7:06 / km) +112m 6:30 / km

Big 5 O, Day 1, Paradise Berg. M50, 5km, 105m, 3rd.

Having read the details, and seen some of the area from our hotel window, I expected this to be quite like The Rockery at Kaapschehoop used at the Big5 4 years ago. In many ways, it was. Careful navigation in the rocky parts was required.

My route to #2 was too safe and cost me time. My mistake at #6 was silly - I just mis-read some bushy trees on a knoll as being ones not near my control, but in fact they were right by it.

My route to #10 was poor. I expected to relocate closer to the control, but never did. In the end I just stumbled across it, and breathed a huge sigh of relief.

Without my mistakes I should have won, so I was pleased to actually be only a few seconds down on the 1st and 2nd places.
