York City Race, Men's Vets, 2nd.

Despite trying hard to have a good look at the map before running off, I still got the route to #1 wrong (15 secs). Simon had the right tactic - watch previous runners on that course - you could see them all the way to the first control. Doh.

Number #2 to #4 were then easy, but #5 was really tricky, and I hadn't worked it out by the time I was leaving #4. I crossed the river bridge studying the map closely, and completely failed to realise the steps were starting. Promptly lost my footing and fell down about 5 stone steps on my arse, severely bashing my arm in the process. Picked myself up, finally worked out how to get to #5, and set off (perhaps 30 secs lost).

#6 to #20 was then a "sprint style" course around a school grounds. Good fun, but tricky. Lost time at #9 because it was up a level and I hadn't read the description first (30 secs). Lost time at #11 because I couldn't work out where it would be from the description (10 secs).

The route to #21 was a bit like the route to #5 in that it took some finding on the map, but was then easy to run. From there it was a long slog back to the centre of York, with some easy controls in to finish. Was struggling for speed after a hard run yesterday, and bruising myself early in the course today. Happy with 2nd.

Wetherby Urban Race, UKUL, Men Vet. 3rd.

Set off fast, and immediately got the route to #1 wrong, losing 50 secs. Then got the navigation right round the fairly easy #2 to #12. Coming back into the town centre I should have slowed down, but didn't. Lost 40 seconds at #14 by not dropping straight down to the river, and then getting the wrong pathway down to the bridge. Lost 10 secs at #24 as the control was on a fence junction rather than the described fence end, and then another 20 seconds working out the right way to get out of that area. Pushed hard up the road to the finish, but I knew it would be more than the 44 mins I knew Simon had done.

Also beaten by someone who perhaps took an illegal route, since their split to #9 was so much quicker than Simon's and mine. Hmmm.
