Shamrock O-Ringen Day 2, M45. 1st.

This was some of the slowest terrain I've ever run on, with deep tussocks, long grass and marsh covering much of it. It was a good course though, very challenging with some interesting route choices. I was tired and started to lose concentration towards the end, but thankfully I'd caught Paul earlier in the course and we'd run much of it within sight of each other, so I was able to use him to keep me going in the right directions once we'd gone into the forest for the last few controls.

Won the class by 5 mins ahead of Neil, but was 3 mins behind Charlie on the same course. All of us had lost bits of time at various places - a clean run should have been well under 90 (but 84 mins would still have been 12 mins/km!).

Shamrock O-Ringen Day 1, M45. 6th.

Tricky orienteering on a good day, and this wasn't a good day. Cloud down low and occasional rain. #1 was easy but my plan for a challenging #2 was nowhere near good enough. In fact I'm not even sure I had a plan, apart from trying to aim off slightly to the right to ensure I hit the big gulley if I missed the small niche that contained the control.

I have no idea why it took me a further 18 minutes of faffing around before I finally found it. I was fairly sure I was off the map to the north, or at least off any part of the map that was mapped to look like the ground. I ended up running down a spur to try to get underneath the cloud cover and see roughly which bit of the mountain I was on, based on the fields almost visible below. That didn't really work. Finally found the big gully again, and used it to find the niche.

The rest of the course was OK, but I'd lost enthusiasm really, so just tried to not make any more big mistakes. Ended up 18 minutes down on Neil who won the Class, and 26 mins down on Charlie who won the course.

Hull City Race. MVet. 1st.

A couple of silly mistakes but generally held it together well. Pushed hard over the last km to make sure I beat the target time I knew was needed to be leading. In the end, only a 10 second victory, so glad I did push hard at the end.

Anagach.

Running on an old map, without a compass. Soon realised I needed a compass, but only had the sun. I worked out roughly what angle the sun was at eventually, but only after a few legs where I was at least 20-30 degrees off my "bearing".

Very enjoyable though. And much more enjoyable than curtain shopping, which was the reason we were in Grantown.
