Orienteering race 1:22:12 [3] 10.96 km (7:30 / km) +67m 7:17 / km

WMOC Long Final. Woodhill Forest. M50. 19th.

I tried to just continue the "steady and careful in the tricky bits" approach, intending to then run harder on the easy sections. It went well for the first eight controls, and I'd already passed the guy 2 mins ahead of me, but then #9 just wasn't where I expected it, even after taking a careful approach. Looped around a little and even heard a control beep, but couldn't find it in the cutty grass. Looped around some more, went out to relocate, came back to a similar place, wasted lots of time. Then Al turned up (2 mins behind me at the start). He couldn't find it either. Finally, when we relocated on a track bend he worked out it was a different bend (under the overprint) and we got it. By then I'd lost 12 mins and all enthusiasm. Arrrgh!

Continued with Al for the next section of the course, occasionally getting ahead of him but mostly just behind. We were a bit scappy.

At #22 I was separated from Al and the other guy, and they got it but I missed. Finished on my own, pretty frustrated. A clean run would have been a top 5, which I'd have been happy with. 19th was my worst result of the last two weeks (apart from a Sprint mis-punch).

WMOC Long Qualification race 2, Woodhill. M50. 2nd in heat 2.

Really complex terrain, which I took really carefully, and had no problems with. Only mistake was #20 which was very easy, but I just mistook how many tracks to cross (or p8erhaps there was an extra un-mapped one). Lost perhaps 30s working it out.

Pleased with 2nd today, pulling me up to 3rd overall in heat 2, for a nice late start time in Saturday's Final.

Had some more fun on the run-in, taking a second off yesterday's time.

WMOC Long Qualification 1, Woodhill. M50. 5th on heat 2.

Very steady, very careful early on in the open tricky dunes bit, then a bit faster once the course was back in the nice fast wooded terrain.

Slight time loss when I started reading the map approach to #11 when I was still heading for #10. Caught myself quickly and corrected ok. Then lost contact with the contours and ground shapes approaching #12, carried on and luckily found #13, which was then a good attack point back to #12. Just careless really, when I wasn't fully focussed. Was expecting to see Bill now, as he'd started 4 mins behind me.

Jogged into the last control, then gunned the run-in, just for fun. A very enjoyable run, in a gorgeous area. Just need to repeat that tomorrow, and then look forward to a hard race in the Final.

WMOC Sprint Final, Auckland University. M50. DSQ.

Finished with a leading time but on download was DSQ. Then spent a couple of hours cursing my new SIAC card for not registering #3. Only when we got maps back did I realise that the distinct memory of punching a tree at #3 was actually probably #2, and I had run straight past #3. Would have taken me an extra 2-3 seconds. Bugger.

Could have got a medal, but well done to Al C-W and Bill who did. We were all well beaten by the Bulgarian who took Gold.

WMOC Sprint Qualification, Epsom Campus. M50 Heat 2. 3rd.

Went pretty much to plan. Nice and steady, no big mistakes, don't run too fast.

It was very tricky at times. Clearly I wasn't spotting the good routes as quickly as Bill, but when I knew where I was going, I was going fast enough. Looking forward to tomorrow, when I'll be running much harder, but hopefully still finding the routes and controls.

MIddle Earth Sprint, Rotorua. M50. 3rd.

The lake was unusually high, which meant that some parts of the map were flooded, including around several controls. Started fine but got to #3 and there were people everywhere, in knee-deep flooded thick green forest. Struggled to work out what was going on given that the map was almost useless (the small paths shown were under water). Sorted it out in the end (lost about 60 secs), but then ran the rest of the course feeling like it was not worth racing hard.

Did at least have a clean race for the remainder of the course, so as an exercise in dealing with bizarre events and getting back into the race, it worked well.

Bill (injured) didn't run, Al C-W did the same time as me but missed a control, and JonX was slightly behind after some similar flooding experiences.

Middle Earth - Middle/Long distance. M50. 2nd (again...)

Picked a wrong route on the long leg to #6, and then couldn't find the control either, losing 1 min (30s on wrong route and 30s in the circle). Couldn't find a bingo pit at #9, lost me 2 mins. At a couple of others (#10, #19, #21) had trouble finding the flag in the bushy terrain - maybe another 1 min in total.

Oceania Middle. Onewhero (The Rockery). M50. 2nd.

Completely different sort of terrain from Woodhill, but lots of fun. Steep, rocky outcrops and rock pillars, and a mix of open and forest. 1:7500 map, and even then quite tricky to work out whether the terrain would be going up or down.

Al C-W did 30, but I was happy with a fairly clean 33 without pushing too hard.

Oceania Relay. M45-54.

In a composite team with JonX, but unfortunately we couldn't get Quentin as well (he'd already been added to a different team). Anyway, Britain was leading the M45/M50 race after I finished in 2nd (behind Carsten J) and Jon brought us up to 1st.

Really nice runable forest with somewhat vague/shallow contour features. Some pampass grass, but not enough to affect visibility much, or runnability at all. Apparently the WMOC final is on the adjacent area, so that will be something to look forward to next weekend.

Ran first leg, and started with all the M35/40/45/50/55/60 teams. After losing 45 secs in the mad rush to find the right #1, I got it together and caught Al C-W at #4. Carsten had by then disappeared off the front. Slight miss at #5 but found it without losing too much time (45 secs?) , and then ran the rest of the course on my own. Finished 2nd, ahead of a pack about a minute behind me. Could have run slightly faster had it mattered more, or had I had someone to race against. But the lesson for WMOC is that finding controls cleanly is more important than running hard.

JonX also 32, Bill 29, Carsten 28.

Oceania Long, Rototoa. M50. 2nd.

Quite tricky technically, made harder by the "cutty grass" (pampass grass) that reduced visibility and made the going a bit harder. Missed #2 and #4 by a couple of minutes each, and then took more care and did a bit better. Still scrappy towards the end though, making a handful of 30 secs mistakes either by poor routes or looking at incorrect flags.

Still managed 2nd though, thanks to others (apart from Bill) making more mistakes.

Oceania Sprint, UNITEC Carrington campus. M50. 1st.

Much more tricky than I expected, but I was sufficiently careful and only lost a few seconds through hesitations. Slippery underfoot because of the heavy shower during my run.
