Orienteering race 52:23 [0] 11.44 km (4:35 / km) +5m 4:34 / km

London City Race, M40+, 5th.

#1,2,3 easy, and I started quite fast.
#4 obviously difficult to get into, so I paused leaving 3 to make sure I could use the route I spotted using the bridge/steps to the south.
#5 easy.
#6 never spotted the approach over the bridge from the west, so I only looked at how to run the route approaching from the east, which had a dead-end option to avoid. West was quicker by 20-30 secs.
#7 it looked 50:50, but actually west is shorter. I went east, probably losing 10-20 secs.
#8-13 although there are route options, none were significant I think, and it was just a case of being smooth through controls.
#14 interesting leg. I saw the route way west through the car park, but discounted it. Actually, the route east also goes a long way from the straight line. West was shorter, so lost maybe 20-30 secs.
#15 a bit fiddly, but no route choice.
#16 a pure running leg along the Thames embankment. Lost 17 seconds on a 3 minute leg to Dave Rollins, who was clearly running faster than anyone else today.
#17,18 ok
#19 saw the option to approach from the SE rather than the north, but didn't realise I could also have cut straight across the playing field to use it. Went in from the N, and as I approached it Jason was coming out.
#20-23 fiddly but fine
#24 easy, and finally caught Jason.
#25,26 easy.

Happy enough with my run, though it would obviously have been better had I got all the route choice legs right. Even so, there's no way I could have run 49 to beat Dave.

Orienteering race 6:53 [0] 1.49 km (4:38 / km)

Final head-to-head: Quentin, me, Jon, Vince.

Quentin and I ran the first butterfly together, while Jon and Vince ran the other. We got a slight lead, then split at the second butterfly. After that, Quentin had about 5m lead on me, but I pulled that back when he hesitated at the next control and took the lead. At #28 we both hesitated - I hadn't counted the trees so wasn't sure which control was ours, but Quentin punched one so I did too. He had a slight lead running into the maze, but went right when I could only see a way in to the left. That got me a 5 second or so lead at the first maze control, and I managed to maintain the lead to the second in the maze, and find a way out to win.

It turned out Quentin had a mis-punch, so lost 30 secs, as did Vince, so Jon pulled up from 4th over the line to 2nd position.

Lots of fun!

BOK Blast, Bristol Urban Race, NUL, Mens Vet, 2nd=

Another in the series of Nopesport League Urban races I shave have won, but didn't. But it was sufficiently technically challenging that perhaps nobody had a perfectly clean run.

Slightly distracted at the start (that's another story), but managed to be clean through 1 and 2. Mispunched 3, as the control I found at what I thought was the centre of the circle wasn't mine, so read the descriptions and realised mine was on the north side of the flower bed, 10m away (-30 secs). Bit of a wobble on the way to 4 as well, trying to run too fast and not reading the map carefully (-10).

Caught Laura (started 1 min ahead) on the way to 6, but then left 6 in the wrong direction (-15) as I hadn't been careful enough about how to approach 7. Clean through 8 to 12 where there was a minute timeout road crossing. At that point I should have studied the long route 14-15, but didn't, so when I got to 14 I only saw the route to the right. Richard B's route left looks better, though his split time isn't. Maybe right was just easier to execute?

Then it got intricate, with 16 and 17 tucked away at the back of houses, and then 18-20 around the school. The best control site of the race was 21, which was just really tricky to find the route in to, especially at speed. I hesitated a lot, took a couple of wrong turns, and generally didn't do it well (-20).

On 24 I got lucky, having mistakenly spent most of the leg navigating to 25, and only as I approached 25 realising that I needed to get to 24 first. Conveniently it was inside the grounds of the building, so my adjusted route turned out to be quite good. Had it been on the other side of the wall, I'd have lost quite a bit.

From 27 to 28 I managed to take the wrong (parallel) road completely, and only realised when it bent sharply that I was in the wrong place. Again, my correction wasn't too bad, though I still lost time to the best split (-45).

From there to the finish was relatively easy, and more so becuase of the 2 minute road crossing timeout that came just before the last 3 controls.

Overall I should have been about 2 minutes better, so a bit disappointing to get beaten by 22 seconds by Clive. It was a great map, and really well planned. I'll definitely make the trip back to Bristol for another urban event.

BOK Blast, UWE Bristol, Prologue, M45, 1st.

A bit scrappy, but got the routes mostly right and ran reasonably well. Equal with Clive's time on the same course 2, and just a few seconds quicker than Ruth Holmes who was leading Womens Open.

BOK Blast, UWE Bristol, Final, M45, 1st

Started 1 minute behind Ruth, and 1 minute ahead of Clive, as we were the fastest three on Course 2 in the Prologue. Raced very hard through the first few, which were easy, in order to get Ruth in sight. That was helpful once the course got into the trickier bits of the university, as I had someone ahead to help me spot the sharp turns and ways out of controls. Finally caught her at #16, and overtook on approach to #17.

Never saw Clive, who finished about 90 seconds after me, so about 30 secs slower for the final race.

Great fun!

Sheffield Don Valley Urban event, Mens Vet, 1st.

Yesterday at Lincoln I felt a bit sluggish, but today, despite being tired, I felt I was running ok. Visited some bits of Sheffield I'd never been to previously, some of which were nicer than I expected, but mostly bits that weren't. Interesting course, though not too hard technically, so the main challenge was identifying where there were slightly better route options. I didn't spot them all, but at least I avoided doing anything silly, and finally managed another NUL win and 100 points.
