Event (Tank Paddock - NOY 5) 1:18:00 [3] 3.6 km (21:40 / km) +90m 19:16 / km

On Desk duties again but not nearly as many people as last time. rockman there in supporting role as Lyndy H was Course Planner and a mighty fine job she did too. Almost avoided going out again but Denis L relieved me at Desk and I decided to go out as I love orienteering in rainy weather - forest is always beautiful, if a little slippery on the clayey bits.
Really lovely vibe around with all the young families interacting - great feel in the club and good to see some people becoming more confident (unlike someone I could mention - me). I haven't been out since 6 May and was almost about to wimp out but very pleased I went.

S-1 (thicket) found it really awkward to get out of the Start triangle as the numerals 6/10 were taking my eyeline from the circle for #1. Struggled to get myself orientated but finally ran through edge of clearing, along track noting intersections.
1-2 (minor w/c) Better now away from spaghetti track network (for those who were at Christmas 5 Day this was Day 5 map). Crossed w/c, realising I was in the fork so further on and crossed 2nd w/c.
2-3 (depression) N to track, around end of marsh/rising lake and stayed on major track rather than taking low road which was definitely slushy, through some nice white.
3-4 (thicket) back to turn of track and seemed to follow track in parallel for too far (was mindful that map is 1:7500), headed through green stripe saw green "everywhere" and couldn't make any shape fit. Saw trudger here, but knew he wasn't on my course, though he was purposefully walking in the "right" direction. Not able to make map fit I decamped to track to the North, noted poles and then sort of turned a few green bits into what I wanted, by going around to N of them and into the crest above some w/c meetings. Found it!! The small elephant who'd been through previously was starting to be a little help. This was the major time loss in my reckoning.
4-5(thicket - surprise) trusted bearing approach again expecting to pick up the w/c lines which i did fairly well
5-6 (pivot control so watch out. between thickets) again took bearing and did fairly well ticking off minor tracks (ie they were well behaved) until major tracks appeared in green strips so decided to just head to Start triangle and go from there - but this was what seemed to confuse me at the Start. Better this time and did fairly well here.
6-7 (Tree root mound) Loong leg so bearing and off I go with wake up call being major track. Crossed w/c and possibly a minor w/c or 2 then off into the big green yonder. Crossed a couple of tracks and was getting wary as didn't think they warranted the symbol on the map. Finally got to the real track and luckily came out at a braiding of it so knew where I was. Confirmed it so located minor track going South. Minor/faint/make you own tack wasn't helping but could see someone down slope further (but he had started 1.5 hours before me so i wasn't trusitng him AT ALL). Nice part of map here and was enjoying the head of the major w/c except I was NNE of where I wanted to be. Read features well here and found control about same time _ no I'll claim a win over leepback
7-8 (termite mound) bearing and through white - again read w/cs well and knew I was in fork and needed to be past it.
8-9 (rubbish) so sorry that this description was on the most beautiful control of the course as I was to find out. From 8 went basically on line to track and decided to just stay on track and go around and then through clearing to w/c. Small elephant in evidence.
9-10 (pivot) crossed w/c and then along heads of minor w/cs, picked up track but didn't expect to be able to find control so went nearly out to major track and ducked back across. Happy to see it.
10-11 (track end) Think i switched off despite taking the really safe route. Went back to major track (previously used S-1,5-6) and along to ruined fence. Made a minor track appear on what seemed to be the edge of clearing but it led nowhere so went W and finally picked up major track going South, branched and then minor track. This was a delightful run in as I observed a youngster on VE course in here - like fairlyland forest - cool, mossy and thin trunked trees.
Rained on and off through out and only a bit breezy occasionally. However I was pleased I'd forgotten to take off skins.
So nav wasn't great today - very rusty - but strangely my relocation was pretty good and that's nav too... isn't it?
Made little or no effort to run as slippery and sloshy. Running can come later. I'm trying to resurrect my nav at the moment.
