Black River Challenge with Ian Harding
Good route choices available and good orienteering overall. The woods were wide open for the most part, a few thick areas, but they were not the norm. We were pretty steady eddie, and at one point had delusions of a 6.5 hour finish... but that was when we were fresh and the controls were close together... Felt pretty tired coming in, but we probably could have pushed it a bit more at times. Slowest progress was an Ian fast walk... which is pretty fast. We only struggled on two controls, which came immediately after stumbling across a control where one of us (me) thought we had another 150 meters to go. Probably the toughest two controls on the course.
Seagate group ride. Up to five people this time. 4 Seagate chubbies, and my neighbor Ladric who toyed with us. Ladric has a job around the corner, so he may join/punish us more often.

Hanging tapes for OTNT. This was the same course set as the alternate for the Loppet Ski-O in the event of a no snow situation. I wanted to get all the tapes removed... so getting a little O practice and enlisting helps in tape removal = win:win
Orienteering race 1:29:44 5.6 mi (16:01 / mi) +790ft14:08 / mi ahr:157 max:215 shoes: Innov8 Bare Grip 200
Not my best race ever... by far.
Started out OK, tried to use the veg to guide my route choices. Chose white to #3... no white to be found. Chose white and stay high to #4... no white to be found, but spiked the control. :-)
5 was easy enough but had a little bobble on 6, and then the wheels fell off. I went .75 of the route to 16 from the shared control. Retrace and attack 7 and 8 with only minor difficulty. I think they could map a few more knolls around 7. 9 went OK, and it went OK the 2nd time also... I left nine, thinking 10, but looking at 11. I realized my error, tried to find 10, but then became confused as to whether I had truly punched 9, or was it 10. I found the boulders at the mouth of 10's reentrant, and the rocky ground to the north, but couldn't find 10. I ended up going back to 9, then 10, then a poor route to 11. I had a few good controls, but then bobbled 16. I think doubling the scale from one week to the next did my noodle in. Hobbled in..... crap.
Orienteering (Control Retrieval) 38:21 [2] 1.78 mi (21:33 / mi) +142ft20:02 / mi shoes: Innov8 Bare Grip 200
Control retrieval. Scouted some of the low territory on the way to control #4... Next to the lake was difficult.... pretty thick, but it opened up significantly as you travelled south.
Picked up the far south-western control. Scared up a big turkey. went to 5 and 6 and ran across the better 1-1/2 of MoBiz and walked to control 9. Picked up one more control on the way in.
