Event: Tri-Loppet

9 AM

Adventure Race race (City of Lakes Tri-Loppet) 1:55:34 intensity: (29:52 @0) + (16 @1) + (12 @2) + (35:14 @3) + (34:53 @4) + (15:07 @5) 15.53 mi (7:26 / mi) +560ft 7:12 / mi

My first Tri-loppet.

What a paddle Cluster F@#$. 30 different boat types, skill levels, and I think over 300 boats. Crazy start with everyone running in to everyone else. I finally got a position relatively up front and settled in for the long effort. I passed a few, a few passed me, but once the initial positioning was set, I don't think the positions changed much.

Handled the hardest part OK. Getting out of the boat. I think adrenaline took over and I just popped out.

The run went OK. Slow at first as the body adjusted to the different mode of transportation, then steady eddie. I got passed by a few speedsters in the first mile, Andrei in the 2nd, but noone else passed me. I was trying to catch Jasper Johnston, who had the largest fan base at the race. I figured I could just bask in his limelight for a bit. I got to within 50 meters, then the calf started acting up. I hobbled closer... but the speed limp didn't get me any closer than 20'. Once the crowd saw him emerge from the woods, it was over.... He took off and gained back the 40 yards I had gained on him.

Bike. Rode this last night, so it should be easy peasy... wiped out at the first tricky single track, really just a slight fall, then hammered to recatch the people who I had just passed... Everything went well until mile 11.52, where I took a high speed digger trying to negotiate a turn. Landed shoulder first. The shoulder took the brunt, but no bones sticking out so I remounted. Everything continued OK until the big climb. I went to the largest ring on the cassette and my chain went into my spokes. Bent derailleur hanger... wiggled it close, pulled out the chain and rode the rest of the course.

Ended up 32nd. Much better than I thought I was positioned.

MNOC had a great showing with 2nd (Biz), 3rd (Michael), Tom was top15 for sure and Andrei top 25. Jim Mullins podiumed for his age bracket and Kelly Crusher Brinkman Won the overall for the women.

Now I am grimacing as I type. Time to ice...

lunch run. Wanted to keep it slow, because of the Tri-loppet tomorrow. Went a little faster than I wanted. Calf is still acting up. It is going to be interesting tomorrow...

Rode with MoBiz to pick up Tri-loppet packets and pre-ride the course. Should be a fun event.

paddle training for Tri-loppet. Probably a bit light on the effort for true training. We did a few fast legs, but a lot of chatting with MoBiz and the Danes.
