Adventure Race race 11:08:41 [0] 74.03 mi (9:02 / mi) +2808ft 8:43 / mi

A quick update.

Best 12 hour race I have done.
1) we finished the course
2) A lot of variety and some requirement to use your brain vs. just brawn
3) the weather was perfect

Ran with MichaelDK (Attackpoint handle) from Denmark. Our first race together.

Started off with a 4 mile trekking section. I was on the map for this leg. Good mix of a trail map (allowed the lesser navigators to get going) then switched to 1:24k for the last two controls and WP to the TA.

Roughly a 6.5 mile paddle on a rain swollen river. My GPS track puts us at 6.5 - 7 mph on the paddle. I likeee. I surrendered the maps after the paddle to let Michael take a turn.

Transitioned to a 1.5 mile bike to another TA. Memory O. The entire team had to go look at the maps ( a XC ski area) then come out without making any notes. Once out of the viewing area, notes can be made. Each team member had to do about a 2 mile loop (out and back). Two person teams had to do two each.

Transitioned to the first long bike leg. 26 miles of mostly flat terrain. Got a few looks from the community as we flew through downtown, then entered the river trail system. Nice paved path. Prior to that point, we did a route choice that cost a position. A little unintended and unmaintained single track.

We then transitioned for another 2 mile loop, which we fortunately received word that a control was missing. This loop was in the Mountain bike/XC ski park.

We then transitioned to a 5 mile single track session that was the highlight of the race. Can't give Wild AR props enough for how they put this together. Great track and a fun ride.

We then had a hilly 17 mile ride back towards a park near the start. Big hills. How big? I was in granny gear for about half of the last hill. 3.5 miles per hour.... I think it took an hour...

We transitioned to a 10' out and back and then remounted the bikes to do a trail less control search through a wooded area with well defined logging trails. Looked a bit daunting, but it worked out OK for us with no wrong turns. The last .75 miles had some nasty sand.

Back to the start finish for what the clue sheet stated was additional instructions. At this point, we hadn't seen a team since starting the single track. We knew we were in third, but didn't know how far back anyone was. Justin was sitting there with his feet up, offering encouragement, and Beautiful People were out on the course. I got blindfolded at this point while Michael led me through an obstacle course, then on to the last O section, a trail run down what seemed like some infrequently used trails. A two mile trek to the finish.

Great race. Third team to finish with all the controls. I think we were the only two person team to complete the course. Good fun.

We made a couple of small goofs. We left our passport in the pfd's, but realized it after running to the bikes, so a little time wasted their. We dropped the passport on the last leg... oops, but found it after going back up a big hill. A couple of short detours on the bike. In all, probably 15 - 20 minutes lost. We could make that up with much better transitions.

P.s. I have to give Michael props. I didn't take a single pull on the bike. He was very content up there and understood I wasn't at peak fitness. Kudos!!!
