Paddling during training class. One long paddle around the perimeter of Bush Lake. A lot of short sessions using different strokes and turning techniques. A lot of sitting around....
9 AM
Note
I took the SKOAC kayak training course on Bush Lake. I hated to miss the BH BBQ, but needed to get some extraction and self rescue training if I ever want to feel comfortable going out on some bigger water.
Did three wet exits. I need some nose plugs to practice these. As soon as I started getting water in the nose, the panic factor goes up a notch.... I feel somewhat comfortable in a controlled setting, but that isn't a realistic view of sea kayaking. I was able to do the unassisted reentry using a paddle float and an assisted reentry no problem.
Ride out to Hopkins, then two loops at Theo, then a stop at Calhoun to watch some friends play volleyball and another play mountain bike polo. Theo seems to change every time I visit, which isn't often, but I can only remember about 50 yards of the whole place.
I got my first look at Theo. They have done a lot of work to clean up the trees, but all the stumps remind you of what used to be.

Lunch ride with two Seagaters. Started off pretty quick. Both guys just wanted to follow me. About 15 minutes in, one guy tells me he is diabetic and needs to Gu up, then tone the pace a little until it kicks in. Two iterations of that. Still good to get out on this awesome day.

Jog to the hill challenge. I could tell we were in for a challenging night when the heart rate starts climbing and the legs feel like lead 50 yards out of the driveway. It was HOT!

Holy crap..... The first challenge.... and I end up with a FAIL. Actually, 8/11 failed. Only Stephen, Biz and Jeff made it through. Many got behind on time and chose to lounge at the bottom of the hill and laugh at the remaining runners. I stuck it out, but realized after lap 2 that I had no chance...

Jog through the tunnel challenge and on to the Tarzan swing. A lot of OTNTers looking at Stephen skeptically at the onset of this exercise. Everything worked out OK with Jeff winning style points for the bellyflop!

Jog to the lake. Nobody seemed in a rush to get to the next event....

Yowsa... Hot run around Harriet. Luckily, the hot weather probably kept a lot of people off of the trails. The distance was a little shorter than the advertised 2.9 miles, but we all short cutted (route choiced) on the south side of the band-shell. I ran 7 minute miles in the heat after completing the hill challenge and got 5th.... Wow we have some fit people hanging around. Kelly beat me by 2:40... I think she was fading though... ;-)
(JJ, that does not count as Crusher praise as I did not mention the fact that running a 16:20 in that heat is super human)

Minnehaha River float. GPS went dead mid trip...
Great way to cool off and have fun at the end of an interesting OTNT session. The water level was perfect. We were really cruising along. The creek varied from over your head to knees knocking the bottom.
Rode with SpaceMonkey out at MH. A lot of fun. The trail is fast and I actually felt a bit of confidence creeping in to the ride.... something missing from my single track experience. Great day for riding.
We did the expert loop twice and the beginner loop twice.
