Orienteering race (Badger Rogaine) 5:46:44 intensity: (15:32 @0) + (26:59 @1) + (1:12:10 @2) + (3:15:50 @3) + (35:49 @4) + (24 @5) **** 25.47 mi (13:37 / mi)

Another good effort by the MNOC and MN contingent. Clark and Andrei took first place with 25 controls, Pete and Chris took 2nd with 24 controls, Darryn and Todd took 4th with 22, and Erin, with CAOC partner took 21, but had time penalties. Weather was perfect and the terrain had a great mix. Some trail, open wood, and thick stuff. Plenty of steep hills mixed with swamp. A little something for everyone... I rated the map "Complex" since we were running on dated USGS 1:24k maps. Trails missing or added, generally good, but definitely required extra thought.

My longest recorded race outside of POCAR, but POCAR includes a lot more trekking. The race was billed as 30k, so we went for a sweep. I don't think our route was that inefficient, but nowhere near the 30k standard. I think we would have stayed closer to home if we knew it was going to be this long. I think Todd and Darryn's route was 5 miles shorter. Chris and I had 2-3 bobbles. Nothing horrible, probably 5 minutes each, but cost us enough time that one more control would not have been attainable. More to come in the TMMAR blog.

Ran with Clark at lunch. 10 mile tempo run at 8/mile pace. Pretty tough in the heat. Luckily I had left a water bottle at work. Clark had to bow out at 8 miles after his heart rate went to 195 for a mile. Dehydrated.... Not sure how smart this was with the ROGAINE this weekend. Clark said, "I am training for a marathon, not a ROGAINE." He'll have fun when Interkosmos puts him in the hurt locker on Saturday.

Cycling (Novarra Team Trionfo Road) 1:44:31 intensity: (4:34 @0) + (10:00 @1) + (1:04:52 @2) + (25:05 @3) 31.22 mi (17.9 mph)

Great day for cycling, bad day for cyclists.....

It seems like everyone who was waiting for a nice day came out and forgot their trail manners. I road the roads around Harriet and Calhoun to avoid that mess. Incidents in order.....

1) Three kids perpendicular to the greenway, spread out so they blocked all traffic in both directions.

2) 4' wide guy. I applaud him for getting out on the roller blades. He didn't look comfortable. Take off the headphones and don't skate the middle yellow line.

3) Parents who are tending to one stroller and let the other one roll in to the loop by the gardens on the north side of the Hopkins loop.

4) Group ride going east on the greenway. Three abreast and weaving. They were all on cross over bikes and were on the larger side so maybe new to this sort of thing. Pretty minor.

5) Car not yielding to me in a roundabout. The guy looked me in the eye and pulled right out. WT....

Anyway, it was still a great day to get out. Maybe I was just a little hopped up from my poor O experience the night prior....

Note

My new Newtons came in yesterday. I have gone from Day glo orange and yellow to electric blue. It looks like they have made some modifications to the shoe. Can't wait to try them.

Commute to work on the converted mountain bike. I purchased this bike in Germany, 1991 ish? No suspension. Perfect for conversion to a single speed commuter. I need to try for 2-3 times/week.

Horrible outing. I will try and overlay my route on Todd's map. I was focusing on trying to follow the lines. I don't know if I was off from trying to work a new compass, the fact that line following isn't my MO, or just scatterbrained.... I had significant drift on quite a few. I imagine a lot of my trouble was trying to use a new technique and race.... If I would have slowed down, I probably would have finished better. It was great to get the practice. Highlights items to work on.

Orienteering ("control" retrieval) 16:29 intensity: (36 @0) + (59 @1) + (3:46 @2) + (8:19 @3) + (2:49 @4) 1.23 mi (13:24 / mi)

Training run with Clark. Linear Ice came along for the fun. Not much talking in the last three miles. Really tough go. I think the true time is around 8:25/mile. We had to stop at freewheel for a waste transfer.... We are in no mans land for weather. I was dressed in tights and a long sleeve mid weight IB. Clark had biking shorts and a heavy IB. Linear Ice wore shorts and a t-shirt.... I think we were all pretty happy to be done.
