Orienteering race (Snowgaine) 3:10:00 [3] *** 5.0 mi (38:00 / mi)
shoes: Soloman XA Pro Gore Tex

Slow Garmin time.

I now know how to change settings on the Garmin. It was set so that any time we slowed below a 20 minute/mile pace, it would stop recording. We had 5 total miles below that pace. A total of three hours and 10 minutes. When I imported my route in to Quickroute, it showed large gaps on every steep hill and sketchy downhill. I am sure my heart rate is off also. Luckily, I took my datalogger along for the ride also. It captured every inch of route, but not the heart rate data.... Total distance of 16.75 miles for the event.

CAOC Snowgaine with Erin Binder. We got 39 controls of 48 on the course. A great map that showed what is possible with LIDAR data.

I will create another entry that reflects the remainder of the 5:55 effort. The new Garmin and I had a confrontation... of sorts. The hills, stopping to punch, and slow down for decision making, etc. it would stop counting time. I guess in Garmins eyes, I only had 2:45 worth of effort. It was aggravating listening to it beep on off on off the entire event.

Anyway, Erin did awesome for her first event of this distance and duration. She was on the map the entire race.

Our effort was good for 7th out of 30+ teams. Top 25%, which was our goal.

An oddity for this race, my legs feel pretty good, but my shoulder is sore. I slipped going up a hill and grabbed a tree, slightly pulling my bicep, and slid out of control down the last hill, banding my shoulder on a tree as we tried to descend a hill down a trail that vanished. With 7 minutes to go, we had no other options. Erin made it down safe, I sacrificed a glove, almost lost my map, and provided Erin with a little end of event humor.

Nav was right on for the event. If I would change anything, it would be to follow Fox Shadows example and focus on higher point value controls. We cleared roughly the same number, but they outscored us by 8 points.

Congrats to WEDALI, the only team to clear the course, finishing with a 12 minute margin.

Went on my tried and true miler from home. Slick conditions on 49th down to the lake. Really slow go. Finally got smart and ran in the street. Didn't want to wear my yak trax, since they bother my feet on pavement, and didn't want to run on my O shoes on the clear pavement at the lake....

I wore my AYUP lights... Coming around the north side of Harriet, three hotties were running my direction, so I moved to the right side of the path. One moved right in front of me and about 5' away lets out a scream... She thought I was a car in the distance. Came across them 2.5 miles later. Her friends were still giving her crap.

Note

I went Global early.... Santa left me a gift. No turkey today, but a globe will do.

So, what is the call on Garmin GPS watches at O events. It doesn't seem like the battery will last for AR events, but I know that people use them for MNOC meets. What about A meets?

Running (Shred Mill) 49:00 [3] 6.0 mi (8:10 / mi) +315ft 7:47 / mi

Clark's marathon formula paced run. 1 mile at 9 min/mile, 3 @ 7 min/mile, 2 @ 9 min/mile. Forgot to strap on the heart monitor.

Countdown.... 2 days until I am global!!

XC Skiing 2:05:00 [4] 12.0 mi (10:25 / mi)

Ski with Biz, Andrei, and Julia. A fun ski at Baker in mixed conditions. The main XC trails at Baker are in great shape. There was some blown snow in some sections, but the base was firm and fast. We went to "Andrei's" part of the park, over where they allow skijoring and snow shoes. Everybody remember 2-15-2010. Andrei got lost.... He thought we started in a different part of the park, and took us down a non-groomed road for a couple of hundred meters. We turned around and found the trail. These trails aren't maintained as well as the normal ski trails. The snow was noticeably softer, your pole would go through, but still fun. One area is very exposed and there was a lot of drifting over the trail. Mad the go much more challenging. I caught a tip and bit it, nice face plant, and torqued my hip and ankle a bit. Didn't ski that well from that point on.

Fun ski followed by Pepito's.

Orienteering (Hanging Controls) 1:34:00 [3] *** 4.38 mi (21:28 / mi)
spiked:15/15c

Hanging Controls in the deep snow. I purposely tried to take routes that would not be used in the race, which put me in some deep snow at times. I forgot poles to hang a control at the first location, which lengthened my loop.

Everyone seemed to have a good event, or at least enjoyed themselves.
