Orienteering 1:48:19 [2] 13.92 km (7:47 / km) +577m 6:27 / km

Run up Mt. Robert to tire the legs and then into orienteering to simulate a long distance. Got dropped by most all on the hill, but lovely views so took it in. Legs feeling alright, and navigated very well for #1-7, but skipped the corridor and took in some controls on the way back as I was aware I may have more activity later on. Messed up the few controls I did take in on the way back.
Concentration not always 100%, but reading the terrain well when it was. The greener areas tending to disorientate me a bit coming through, but probably not helped by the lack of a compass. Good training.

Orienteering 28:13 intensity: (12:52 @2) + (15:21 @3) 3.47 km (8:08 / km)

Camp champs sprint round the forest / bush.
Tricky racing round this stuff. made a haimes of #1, 90sec gone, got into it a bit better and flowing nicely through some, but still lost time on #4, #5, #9 & #14.
Should really try upload a map.

checked in at the visior centre and lucked out that there was still 1 bunk left at angelus hut so booked it and hit the road. Packed up some stuff, and got going.
Jonny & Laura said it had taken them 4hrs going slowly, so was guessing 3-4hrs, so setting off at 16:20 I thought I should escape darkness (20:30ish), but made decent time in the end so all g.

Middle distance in West bay
Sweet area. Reminded me of aveyron to a certain extent, but basically very detailed open / bush veg, constantly changing. Tricky with no compass, but settled after the first 2 and mostly got into it nicely.
Little over-confident and under-reading the map on 2 longer legs late on and had issues with them.

night-o in saint arnaud
torch was uesless, but it was still a little bright early on so managed that alright. Could navigate roughly to the area but couldn't really see the ground and couldn't spot any tags. fortunately was going along with one of the kiwis for a while and he did all the tag-spotting.

Cape farewell
Nice spot but got soaked, and think it was high tide cos I couldn’t run along from one beach to the other despite the map implying so.
Made do though and lovely along deserted cliffs on the way back.
6 PM

Running 9:31 [2] 1.68 km (5:40 / km)

Some sprint-o training in Nelson. Lucked upon a NZ performance camp (I think), and so it shall be a good weekend of orienteering.
Went very well in the micro sprint I think.
But pretty poorly in the normal sprint. Mostly alright, but not planning ahead consistently, or enough detail meant I got caught out quite badly twice I think.

Abel Tasman, gave up on the garmin pretty quick as it wasn’t reacting too well to the water.

Running 37:40 [2] 7.34 km (5:08 / km) +78m 4:52 / km

Maybe wasn’t necessary, but empty roads & full sky made it very worthwhile.

Abel Tasman
Lovely day out. Had been told of a bus going from the end of the trail (Marahau) to Kaiteriteri at 16:10.
That seemed potentially doable, but when the water taxi took 90mins it looked like more effort as I was estimating 32k @ 7:30s being 4hrs, and it was now 12:00 starting off.
So, set off and who knows, but I wanted a lunch & swim stop so I gave up on the idea after a while.
Really nice trails, some little bits through water as the tide was marginally too high for the low-tide route, but they were brief splashes.
Really enjoyed it, and the lunch & swim break was really nice at Akersten bay as it is slightly off the trail so it was dead quiet.
Successfully managed to hitchhike back to Kaiteriteri in the end.

Very nice little taster of the Nelson lakes. Heavy rain, and misty up top, but it cleared enough for some stunning views of the lake coming back down paddy’s track.
Nice loop, just about running all the climb.

Had looked at going up Mt Fyffe, or some of it - had to be at a tour for 12:30ish.
Anyway the map brought me the wrong way to the car park, so well and truly didn’t have time at that stage, and happily settled on an easy jog.
Intended 2nd one later, but it was very late by the time I got to Murchison.
