Jukola 2017, EUOC 1, leg 4
Started alright. 60s lost on 3, was mostly alright but really confused by an extra track, and a little scrappy because of it.
Took my time through the next few tricky controls, which I'd seen a bit of on the TV screen. Was with a few youngings, who were moving well & mixed nav. Got through the few cleanly then, and took the right-hand track route back to 7, so did the kids & finally I started to drop them.
Got it cleanly, but was all alone now as they all had different gaffles. Knew 8 was tricky, but still didn't give the map enough time, and blew 3mins.
Got going again, little scrappy on 9 (30s) then solo again to 11 and ended up way too low, saw people I'd passed coming through me (2mins).
Scrappy on the next 2 or 3 and then another awful mistake on 15(?), crossed the path well left and made a hames of it, eventually relocated off the lake, but 4mins lost.
Safe to say the kids well & truly trashed me.
Positive: foot held up well & physically seemed decent, first half navigation was good. Had some good splits early on.
Negatives: orienteered like shite on my own, another Jukola with a big mistake, just awful really. The crowds possibly do it to me. Anyway, lack of orienteering & particular scandi stuff will have played it's part.
