Orienteering (Inter-varsities) 1:10:32 [5] 11.55 km (6:06 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 - 2013

My legs and all their beautiful muscles were dying on the way to the start. So horrendously tight.
I knew the first section was crucial. Rough terrain, downhill, tricky orienteering, this was exactly where Conor and Anton were going to be able to try and take time on me. I lost a little on 3, but got through these controls okay, it was a really nice start section. Got going on the long leg to 5, but as soon as I hit the slight uphill I really struggled. 6 had a small stream before the control, which totally threw me. I found it, and thought I must be at the stream just after the control even though it was too early. Quickly decided I was wrong, and continued on, which I'm happy with, got it okay even though I found the area a little strange (~1min lost). Struggled to leave 6, but got 7 okay. Took the wrong route to 8 (~30secs), went all the way right.
Next section was okay, ran reasonably alright through to 14, catching Hugh at 12. Had to tie my lace to 9, also struggled a little on the track but otherwise good. 15 was bad though, out in the open I just let myself get distracted and couldn't make sense of any of it. 1:30mins lost, on the easiest leg on the course. Was running well through the forest on the next section. Really struggled on the tracks again to 19, but worked hard and got good flow for the last few controls, which was crucial. Finished well and nailed the last few.

Was totally surprised to have beaten Conor, and take the Inter-Varsity title, but even more so to find I'd just pipped Anton. He often has mistakes, but I've never even troubled Anton in a Long Distance race before because of his far superior running speed. This was a good confidence boost, even though training has been bad lately, my terrain strength is good, although track is bad, there is hope for my forest feet yet. Really good feeling.
UCD took the Men's Team too with Laurence and CillĂn taking 4th and 5th.
U C D! U C D! U C D!

UCC Campus Sprint Series #4
Went into this Sprint having won number 2 and 3, but still joint 4th in the League. Also unbeaten in Sprint discipline in Ireland since the JK here. So, naturally, I wanted to win.
Realistically, my race wasn't that bad. My navigation wasn't amazing, and my running wasn't amazing, but neither were really that bad either.
I started fine, got the first few okay. I like to start Sprints how I intend to finish them. Fast. There's no point in me taking the first few a bit easy and having to work back that time later, being cautious so as not to have a huge mistake. I don't like that attitude. So, for number 3 and 4, I tried to keep a good pace.
Number 5 was bad, I just got caught by the hedge and was really indecisive about which way I should got o correct, not huge, but probably 10secs. This was a bad section for me. Number 6 I took the wrong route and had to stop to check if my route was okay (<10s). 7, I hadn't planned my exit properly and left out an exit too far to the right from the platform, forcing myself to go to the right hand side of the building for the control (<10s). 8, I don't even know here, I used it to plan, and did well, but I shouldn't have been this far behind on a running leg.
This section of controls was pretty vital. I punched 4 1sec behind Darren, but punched 8 39secs behind.
having planned ahead, I nailed the rc to 9, and easily took the best split, which at least made up for 8. 10 was fine, but I hadn't planned ahead and just missed the route to 12. The rest of here was pretty fine, with some hesitancy errors more than anything else, it was a hard sprint. Thankfully came out of this section only 40secs down, so only 1sec lost over this.
After the time-out, I started fast, and my only real miss in the park was finding a way in to that single tree, but I got it without much loss. The rest was just running and I lost a bit of time with tiredness and lack of good speed at the moment. Stayed even in the butterfly with Darren which is good, but was a bit back on the last few.

Darren was running better, and his time would have been a very good race for me, even though he had mistakes. This is a bit disappointing, but I know I haven't been training, and I deserve no more. My Sprint-O was alright, but there were common errors in that early section which I shouldn't be making. Still had no issues recognising all the uncrossables quickly. I still look forward to coming races, and reckon with tough courses, I could do well in selection races and the likes.

Unfortunately, although I won 2 of the Sprints and came 2nd in the 3rd, and also only missed the 1st one because I was planning it, I still only managed a measly joint 4th in the Sprint Series with 2 races to count, if that makes sense. Never really questioned the points system before now, but the UCD event was clearly worth more points than any of the others, and my subsequent races were never going to be enough to catch the leaders from the UCD race.

Should also note the pace is worse than DCU and UCD, but it was harder for me than either. Pace is better than Trinity, at least. I need these races to be under 4:00/km for my confidence to really get going.
