WUOC Sprint - 51st +2:51 (Kris smashed it)

Nice area, and a bit of prep work for the hanging gardens area helped. Didn't feel great out there physically, and 2 misses ~13se & 8sec. Some hesitancies as well, but nothing major.
An alright performance, it was tricky, but both mistakes were avoidable, and a bit of a shame not to get moving better, but not moving too badly either.
Low 16 might be doable on a good day but after that who knows.

Started alright, and saw uncrossable for 3 on route to 1. Was pretty clean them up to 5 & 6, but hadn't looked ahead to 7, and got caught. Was indecisive and then ended up running straight down a small path to the river and along left (13sec).
Went right to 9, which looks like it was good.
Into the hanging gardens I started to feel ew even more than I already was, but I mostly knew my route to 10 from pre-race prep (necessary here for a good result I would say, but you should still frown upon me). Again could make quick decision to 11, and 13 to get the routes alright, although some hesitancies. Same out of the map exchange to 15.
Struggled to tell exactly where 17 was placed, and again on 18, and spent a while checking it was on the correct side of the wall (8sec).
Left to 19, relatively clean to the finish, but struggling a lot.

Quite clean, but a bit slow. Performance: alright.
Result: rather far down the list in 51st, but beat and was around some guys that I can be happy with. Would like to be more around where Eoin was - good race by him.
Ultimately, still need to get stronger.
Preparation matters more than I'm a fan of, but I did enjoy looking into this area.

Nice run with lorrieq, from ticknock, over to pine forest & back with two short hard climbs over by zipit.
Definitely not the freshest today, so didn't get the confidence boost I would have hoped for, but despite the lack of energy, still solid climbing throughout, not slow, and didn't tire towards the end.
so mostly still a positive return.
Last long or semi-long run before WUOC.

Note

Home for a few days.

Really beneficial week of training in Aix Les Bains. Interesting getting properly into the coaching aspect, and interesting seeing all the exercises Toni came up with, in particular the stuff talked about while not in the forest.
Coaching definitely gives a different perspective, and helped force you to think about your own techniques and preparations.

Happy with my shape at the moment, and navigation seems to be coming together after the last month or two. Have to try and keep it together with final prep and that for WUOC. Good to have had a lot of orienteering in hot weather, 'cos it looks like that's what we're in for.

Tour Championships
Middle distance course on the WOC 11 Middle final area.
Took it seriously as Last chance for a race before wuoc.
In control well for first, orienteering aggressively, but quite on the edge.
Lost control a bit to 5, but it was a little hard to understand the map, ended up a re entrant over, 30-45s.
Solid on 6, stayed left on the path, and generally decided on a left route for 7. Leaving 6 put the finer route together. Pushed hard up the hill, feeling good, and not entirely certain entering the control but got it well.
Kept the pace up and orienteering quite well on the way back, miss on 10, turned a hill early - 20-30s.
And dragged by felling on 11, 20s.

Good performance, happy with orienteering, need to ensure I can keep this feeling for wuoc.
Tricky in places, but the training this week helped and definitely found today a bit easier.

Gaffled downhill race on La Chavatte.
Started with Eoin, 90s after the older guys.
Dodgy finding myself on 1, but got in control then. Just behind Eoin for first 2, and switched in front on 3, but girly together.
Different Gaffles on 4, and together on 5, having gone through most of the juniors.

To 6, I saw Conall going the wrong way & Eoin went over his ankle but said he was somewhat okay.
A little distracted and was hesitant entering the control, but got it okay.
Saw Jonny then, he was lost, but I entered the re entrant for 7 too high and didn't think it fit, spent time figuring it out and going back before having another go.
Went a little lower and found it, but lost 90s.

In control again until the finish and waited it out for the juniors. A lot of good bits, but 7 was poor, good to get this sort of training in though.

O-France Day 5
It was hotter today.
Started dodgy on 1, but happy with 2 & long leg to 3. Fields, fences, buiding and paths made it quite alright.
Got very close to 4, but then lost a lot, again quite good to 5 I think, but again bad to 6.
Was going alright over the next while but the heat was hitting me so I was struggling. Got through the butterfly okay - mostly just got stuck coming back to the same control, but started losing more time afterwards on 16, and a lot on 17.
Through spectator still moving but slow, and then lost more on 23.
Probably lost 25mins today which is displeasing. Tough out there, but not as hard as yesterday at all.

O-France Day 4
"Middle distance" - WT: 35mins, won in 49, by 5mins.
Really really tricky out there today. Super area, loved it.
Started clean, and kept going relatively fluid for the most part early on, lost some time on 4.
Good route to 5, but misunderstood the terrain slightly entering the circle and made a parallel error, came back, but ~2mins lost.
Ploughed on okay. Happy to get a tricky 11 alright.
Okay along the path on route to 14, but after leaving it, I was out of my depth quickly. Struggled to pick up anything. Tried to stop and relocate but had to head out for the fence, hoping I hadn't already crossed it. Relocated quite close by, but lost ~3-4mins.
Very slow keeping contact on 16, but got there.
Had a shocker on an easy 18th, left the track in the right spot but was off line and hit a fence which confused the he'll out of me, relocated but lost ~6mins.
Okay / good to the finish, but a shame about 18th.

Much better position today though - many seemed to struggle more. Marcus just beat me which was a shame as I needed that time back.
Could have lived with the other mistakes, but 18 was a shame.

Roughly 15mins lost out there.

Had caught Eoin at 12, but I was tired and he was running quicker. The nature of the terrain meant we finished together.

Gorgeous out, delightful route, not too tough, but tiring nonetheless.

IMRA Balinastoe - 4th

Pretty good race, particularly considering the weekend.
Still not the best on the climb, though was a little more tired today I think, drifted back to 9th on the first climb.
Came through them quickly to 4th when it flattened, and ran away on the descent through boggy rides and forest. Running strongly for the most part.
Reeling in Peter O'farrell and got close at the bottom, but knew I'd be smashed on the climb so it was all irrelevant.
Had some brief worries of the group being caught, but knew I'd be grand for the final descent.
Didn't matter though, steady on the climb, and felt pretty good without competition, so could cruise down in no man's land at the end.

Good result. Looks like I am in decent shape, but I'll need to see it translate to orienteering yet.

Great course.

Saunders Mountain Marathon Day 2
Nicer weather, we'd chosen to avoid the high fells in case it was bleak up there with the weather, generally meant we were running a bit better.
Slightly lighter pack probably helped.
Enjoyable.

More to come.

We were on the edge of having enough food due to the tough conditions of the weekend. We had even treated ourselves to a swiss roll, but I was still hungry going to bed.

We got up late with no alarm, as was to be expected from this team. Some food, quick wash & pack.
Missed our start by 1-2mins, straight through the chasing start and away. Climbed relatively hard up to 1, but were still almost caught by 2.

We took the low route to 3, another monster leg. Wide on the road. We were with the same team as yesterday. They moved ahead and climbed well, we could use them a little, but not too much.
Realised we had an extra control I'd forgotten to mark on route to 4. Got it done, and James got the pepsi + caffeine pill in to 5, the explosion was real. Suddenly we smelt blood & the hunt was on, as I tried to keep with James.

We climbed pretty well back towards the final fells. We smashed it past the other pair on the descent, and we split coming into the control to give James a head start to the next one. Stupid. He didn't know where he was going. We lost 1 minute looking for each other.

Still solid into the finish and my oh my the joy.
Felt much shorter, and the finish was much more satisfying.

Strong performance.

Saunders Day 1
Rough weather, long day, fairly brutal out there.

We started off messy. We weren't at the start with much to spare, set off marking on the move, but we were all over the shop doing it, so just stopped 100m up the fell to do it.
I marked the start wrong, and we wandered into no man's land in the marsh, off line to 1. We cracked it, and corrected on a left-hand line, got it, but we dropped min. 5mins between the start and error on this leg.

We'd picked our route to 2, and we were going to go wide right. Climb maybe a bit extra but run along the tops of the fells and get good running. We were feeling fresh and pushed the pace quite a bit. Despite water breaks at the stream before the control, we got there with a fastest split - just over 1hr for the monster leg.

We stayed high on 3, which was fine, but we messed it up coming in, and lost another 5mins. I had chosen right to 4, up high street. Brutal. The weather was turning and we were on a much higher and more climb route than others, this leg took a lot out of us and was a bad decision.

We linked up with another pair at 4, and ploughed through with them for a while. James was starting to struggle but I was feeling pretty good still so I did the extra in and outs and controls to keep pace with the boys.

We kicked hard to 7 I think it was to drop them, we were succesful, but climbing out of 8 we were maybe 25-30k in and it was the last brutal climb, but it was so steep, and we were struggling. We got passed here, only to split on different routes all of a sudden.

I knew our route was better and easier, I dragged Haynes through the next few controls, I was moving alright but still tiring a lot.

I didn't eat lots out on the course, and after a brutal day, where we had to tough out a section of grim weather on top of high street and battle on for another 15 - 20k, the finish had the depressing feeling of not being finished.

We got the tent up both napped before food, until the rain started, ideal...
