finally caught up on the backlog.

Sweet sweet summer. It's coming to an end though.

Strength and Conditioning 45:00 [3]
(injured)

Big Core and ankle session.

Ankle is recovering, light road jogging works. Still will be a little while before I'm back in the terrain I think. Hopefully I can get back in time for stuff soon.

But at the moment I'm pretty happy to take a few weeks off running, I realise that my fitness will drop a little bit, but the base is there, and when I start into my winter training routine, training is going to be tough. So worth it now to make the most of the time off.

WUOC Long distance

Started this race well, feeling good, and navigating just how I would have liked.
Was getting into number 2, slightly ahead of Conor and Eoin, but just before it I ran hard down a hill and heard my ankle crack. I stumbled on, and forced myself to get up the next hill, but I couldn't put any pressure on my foot. I knew it was over, but I didn't want to admit it.
I sat and nearly cried for a minute. Instead I just let out noises of pain and roared profanities.

I didn't get selected for WOC, so WUOC was a chance for me to actually prove myself, and run a first good international race. But here it I was, lying on the ground. A really big let down for me.

I had a long hobble back to the finish to go through the different phases of disappointment, anger, and self-pity before I got to see anyone, so I wasn't too much of a downer on anyone else I think.

WUOC Sprint Mixed Relay - 20th

Solid race, started clean, one minor miss (checked another control on route to mine). Easy though.
Ran hard enough.
Ran alone mostly, but then coming up to the spectator I saw China just ahead. Knew I had gained sometime so I would just have to do him.
Hit the spectator still a bit off him, but gaining. We took different routes to the next one, and we punched together. I was a little worried he'd be freaking fast, and just hang on to me until the run-in, so I really upped it for the last 3 controls, and thankfully dropped him. Comfy in the end.

Rumpal E2
We ran the H16 course, to save ourselves a bit before WUOC.
Just jogged around, and a bit of a head to head with Eoin at the end, which I won of course.
Cool enough area. Fun party last night. Czech republic has been possibly the most fun so far.

Rumpal Sprint - 10th (+1:55)
Good start field, won by Daniel Hajek, with Marek Schuster in 4th and others.
Solid enough race, minor misses, but not really fully with it physically either. Need to get my speed up big time this year.
Eoin killed it. 15:01, 10s down on Marek.

O-training with Johan on a gorgeous rocky area map.
The area Czech used for their JWOC middle selection races in 2013. Sweet.
Long drive / night last night up to Luhacovice from Slovenia. Worth it though. Good to see Johan again. Good times.

OO Cup E5 - 10th (+4:52)

Same areas as day 2, but pretty much none of the forest. Nice middle distance course. Pushed hard throughout, and was pretty happy with my race. Had some notable mistakes, most were 10s or so, but 2 errors costing up to 45s.
Eoin also took 45s out of me on the long leg on running.
Finished best of the Irish, but only 2mins ahead of Eoin, who was making big mistakes, so he's clearly stronger than me at the moment.

OO Cup E4 - 19th (+24:44)

Sick area. Long distance at 1:7500 because of the amount of detail.
Started fine, but wasn't comfortable enough in the terrain, and was losing some time to conor on just running / navigation, when I didn't have mistakes. The main difference though was I made far too many mistakes.
Started fine, and was feeling comfortable, but some small stuff, and then they started repeating, it was tricky terrain, but repetiitve 1-2min misses just isn't on at all.
A lot of routechoice error on my part too, so this race is going to take some serious analysis.
10mins down on Conor.

OO Cup E3 - 30th (+11:15)

Gorgeous middle distance area. But I unfortunately was a bit hungover, and couldn't get anything out of my body. Walked / jogged around, miles behind.
Eoin was the same. Conor was running alright, but not navigating well because of the same reasons.

OO Cup E2 - 13th (+12:40)

Wasn't as happy with this today. This terrain is demanding and it basically took it out of me.
Started very well, and was 1min down after the first 7 controls. Entered the forest and orienteering was alright technically, but it just didn't feel as fluid as in the semi-open stuff.
On the way to the 6th control my foot landed awkwardly on a rock, and I got a sharp pain in my foot. It was alright for the most part, but at the start of the long leg (40mins or so), it started to get sorer, and it began to affect me mentally I think. Was still ahead of Conor here, but wasn't great on this leg, or over the rest of the course, and pretty much struggled back.
Not the trickiest area, but really enjoyable terrain.
Conor beat me by 2 and a half mins in the end, he was happy, so considering everything it wasn't that bad, but it's hard not to feel like if I'd kept up like the early section, 75 or 76mins could have been on the cards.

OO Cup E1 - 9th (+3:21)
Solid race - first time beating OBT!
Started sloppyish, and lost 15s to 1, going to 5 instead. Clean through the next bit, but some 3 - 5s issues. Possibly a bad route to 6, but hit it cleanly, and a lot of the others didn't so could have been worse.
Small 10s issue on 7, then looked up and spotted OBT heading to 8. Went left on the long one to 9, which was worse than straight I think. Hit it well and OBT came in just behind me (clearly messed it up).
So, was with him through 10-12, the trickiest area, and it was nice to get a pull through here, and watch his impressive speed. He went right to 13, I went left, missed 20s, but he missed more so I was ahead. Another 20s miss on 14, and in comes OBT again. The rest was pretty easy, running hard, watching Olivier lose me, but good fun.

Not the trickiest area, but good to properly push myself, I need to do more of this in races abroad.
