biking 52:00 [2]

run 1:51:00 [2]

The incredible run of fine weather continues...I heard it was in the 90s in Denver, and that the Broncos game was played in the warmest weather they've ever had for a game in Denver. This might not be the good news for modern right wingers that Sen. James Imhofe was looking for, but I am sure he will find a way to look past this temporary setback and go on fighting the unscientific fight.

A good sized fire broke out in the Laramie Range northeast of town around noonish or so, and the smoke plume was visible all day long. While I was out mapping, 2 big fire planes roared overhead headed towards the fire, to do their thing, one supposes.

Also while mapping I spotted some small sunflowers blooming in the woods. Given their size and location, I assume it is some native species. Though diminutive, the flowers were brilliant yellow gold, and for some reason put me in mind of the classic song by Katrina and the Waves: "Walking On Sunshine."

The aspens are now also mostly golden yellow, but they don't make me think of "Walking On Sunshine." I do like the way the running trails in the area look as the aspen leaves fall down on them.

I mapped right up the edge of Yellow Pine, and now will prepare to shift to a new location.

Afterward, I ran towards Pilot Hill and back in the late afternoon. It was still warm then, and the skies were as blue as they were at the start of the day. There wasn't a single cloud in sight the whole day.

Too nice of a day not to go for a ride, even though it might slightly "jellify" my legs for running later on.

run 35:00 [2]

Went running, and found a dime on the ground!

Truly, it doesn't get any better than that.

Note

On the way back home last night from Killer Bee-ing, I passed a possible abandoned sub-moron vehicle on the Happy Jack road. Signs that it was a sub-moron vehicle: it was some older vintage sedan type vehicle, quite battered, it was "parked"at an odd angle to the road--with the tail of the vehicle almost extending over the white side line and the front of the vehicle was somewhat implanted in a low berm of dirt, and there were no license plates.

I do consider it thoughtful of the sub-morons to have apparently abandoned their wheels on the Happy Jack road where it can be more easily retrieved and disposed of by the authorities, rather than deep in the national forest on some sub-road.

Trails, very dry trails.

Note

Hmmm--odd, the OCAD site seems to be down. I wonder what's up with that?

There were strange noises from the end of the street. I went out to investigate. It turned out to be a large herd of sheep, being moved along by the old fashioned way--ie., by ATV.

biking 1:10:00 [3]

Biked over to the National Forest Service HQs to deliver some paperwork. Met the new person (about the 5th person in the past year) handling special permits, Cassidy.

Orienteering 1:34:00 [4]

Killer Bee Test Loop in 57:32, a new PB for the year. Legs felt much better while I was running than I would have guessed, which makes me wonder how much faster I could have run, had I tried pushing harder.

Lots of cows were out there mooing their encouragement! Sometimes they would moo and then stampede.

It was time to check out what was going on out at the airport, and beyond. I still feel somewhat depleted from yesterday's exertions, so pizzafication is indicated tonight.

Orienteering 1:48:00 [4]

Pelican Bay. Ran the Rocky Mountain Goat course so that I could savor the experience myself. Nice conditions--sunny, trending towards warmish, light breeze, and cows at several of the crucial choke points.

One part of the experience I especially savored was running down the hill out of #15, through the aspens, and then, instead of hitting a little indistint trail right in front of some immense rocks, I hit the immense rocks first. That threw me. Could I have simply have missed the indistinct trail? Back into the green, but there was no trail. Very odd. So I forgot about the trail and began maneuvering around the immense rocks. It was only after I started on that detour that another glance at the map "clicked" for me, and I saw what had happened. Heading down the hill out of #15 was correct, but you still needed to head down in the *right* direction, and I had headed downhill near 90 degrees out, and had run into a wholde different set of rocks than the ones I had expected. That explained the missing indistinct trail, too!
