skiing 1:14:00 [2]

Mild temps plus very big wind all day long made for some pretty wet snow. If some sun can get added to the mix, a lot of snow will disappear very quickly now!

skiing 1:42:00 [3]

Another day of winter, with a fair amount of snow blowing around up top, and a goodly bit melting as it hit the Happy Jack road and then becoming re-frozen--perfect for driving!

Winter has to end sooner or later, but today was not that day. Trails were quite good, and much firmer than yesterday, with corduroy laid down.

Tuesday Mar 29, 2011 #

skiing 1:16:00 [2]

5-6" new snow overnight. The trails had been rolled once, and were still quite soft.

skiing 1:50:00 [2]

Considering it's the 28th of March, skiing was total-yow! Yow!!! I mean, yeah, it was that good! Several inches of new fell overnight and it never got near warm enough today to slush it up, so it was awesomeness in white!

skiing 1:28:00 [2]

New snow fell overnight as a reminder that while the calendar may say it is spring, the calendar does not call all the shots, nor does it often have the last word.

run 43:00 [2]

Nice out; the sun continues to eat away at snow patches out in The Flats.

biking 28:00 [3]

Rolled by one good sized tree in a residential area near the university that had been blown down by the wind. Several nearby trees were looking nervous and clearly affected by the accident.

skiing 1:02:00 [2]

Winds started roaring with gusto as I was driving up to ski, and just as I was pulling into the parking lot, a nice little March snow squall struck. Cool stuff!

run 44:00 [3]

Thought I would run from the ski trails out into Telephone Song in order to get a view down over the valley, but mammoth snow drifts intervened and, as it turned out, the crust was weak enough from the past week of milding conditions that postholing was unavoidable. So I retreated and headed home. Nothing for me to complain about either.

run 48:00 [2]

Fully sunny, but still a bit on the chilly side. Just another day in a small, remote, college town. ; )

skiing 1:06:00 [2]

Snow still holding in there; it's just pretty dirty.

run 1:05:00 [3]

Snow trails. Footing more suspect in some spots than it has been lately, which comes with the territory/season. What is and what should never be does not apply here.

Tuesday Mar 22, 2011 #

run 50:00 [2]

Quite windy.

skiing 56:00 [2]

Somewhat amazingly, the winds picked up during the afternoon from what was already near Force 11. Even though the ambient air temp wasn't cold, skiing felt pretty chilly for March 22.

I understand a good many semis left the road today, both in Colorado and Wyoming.

run 58:00 [3]

Only saw one freshly downed tree, and it was only an old dead aspen tree, so rather disappointing in a sense. Really, given the strength of the winds today, I was expecting to see more damage than that in the forest.

biking 54:00 [3]

Maybe yesterday was the first day of spring, but today is the day it *feels* like the first day of spring. Already I have had to dodge several fearless, dive bombing robins in engaged in an enthusiastic search for worms. There's almost no snow left around town, except in shoveled and plowed heaps, and a few more protected areas. Of course, that could easily change with the appearance of a spring blizzard.

skiing 1:19:00 [2]

Totally spring conditions. The current year crop of pine beetle trees are now changing over to show more yellow and brown-yellow needles. Soon they will all be rust red.

biking 1:07:00 [3]

It did not feel very much like spring from the vantage point of a bike, and that's for sure. Instead, it felt like the Laramie Valley would be a remarkably excellent location for a mega data center that needed to keep cooling expenses to a minimum.

skiing 1:13:00 [2]

Coverage on the trails remains great; no sign of any rocks anywhere yet. Pine needles, on the other hand...

run 1:06:00 [3]

Ran snow trails at the Summit. Solid footing as long as you stuck to the snowshoed parts.

skiing 1:31:00 [2]

Winds were mighty big right from the git-go today, leading to scratching plans to go biking somewhere in the morning. Instead, I headed up for the be-needled ski trails, where I saw only one other person. The sun was mostly held back by thin, high clouds during the day, but even so the trails were exhibiting some classic signs of wilt.

run 1:31:00 [3]

Ran downhill and downwind from the parking lot, and must have turned around at the *perfect* point, because without intending to, I ended up running for exactly as long as I skied. Still some banks of snow across the national forest dirt roads in all the usual snow prone spots, but it's going fast.

Orienteering 1:02:00 [3]

Time for the O' run of the year--with this year's opening venue being the always nice and highly exposed Crow Marsh. What made this as especially auspicious selection was the wind today, which was at proper full blown Wyoming gale strength, the type of wind where when you try to start warming up by jogging into the wind, you go immediately anaerobic. No telling how much higher the Nebraska Sandhills were getting today, what with all the fines from Wyoming that was being propelled that way at the speed of wind. "The Wyoming Sandhills" really would be the more apt name, considering the source of origin of the material making up the Sandhills region.

Afterwards, I stopped by the store to buy some new socks. Orienteering is hard on socks, and I plan to go through a lot of socks between now and whenever the first snowfall arrives at the end of the summer, whenever that is--late July, early August, whatever.

skiing 1:16:00 [2]

Afternoon ski; a number of the trails had only one track showing on them, and that was *after* I had skied down them.

Wednesday Mar 16, 2011 #

run 1:02:00 [2]

Pretty warm out--approaching 48F or maybe even hotter--and combined with a decent wind and much sun, the snow here in the valley is getting pounded pretty good. If clouds hold off, there will be a lot less snow around town than we started the day off with.

I checked out the standard interval loop I use in the Flats, and it still has a good bit of snow and mud, and not much dry ground, but that is now likely to change quickly for the better.

Surprisingly, there were no sub-moron vehicles mired in any of the more massive mud puddles, but given that the puddles are there, and the near irresistible temptation they pose, that could change quickly, too.

I did not see any mice.

biking 1:04:00 [3]

Nice amounts of wind, and nice out in general, too!

All the evidence is that there remains at least a little bit more wind power that could be tapped in the future.

skiing 1:06:00 [2]

Trails were soft, but held up well otherwise despite the heat.

run 37:00 [3]

Tuesday Mar 15, 2011 #

biking 47:00 [3]

It soared to 50F today, making the pre-spring Ides of March haircut mandatory. Now I look like a short haired whippet!

skiing 1:10:00 [2]

The sun did what it could to the ski trails today, which was not much. Not yet. But it's coming.

run 1:08:00 [3]

On snow trails. With it getting so warm today. I had to pay attention in the more sun stricken areas of trail, mindful of the possibility of post-holing. It would not do to sustain a post-holing injury right before March Madness gets underway!

biking 36:00 [3]

skiing 54:00 [2]

Snow was soft and warm, but the trails had been groomed up very nicely. Almost nobody but me was out, and there were only a few tracks ahead of me even late in the day. Typisk for this time of the season.

run 1:04:00 [3]

Today was not the day I began orienteering in 2011, and, judging by the amount of snow still left in the open areas just from Saturday's snow, tomorrow will not be either.

Sunday Mar 13, 2011 #

run 1:00:00 [3]

Snow trails, little up little down.

Saturday Mar 12, 2011 #

biking 1:53:00 [2]

skiing 1:01:00 [2]

No sun action today, so the trails weren't too skittery.

run 29:00 [2]

Ran by a fresh (several weeks old?) sub-moron trash pile consisting mostly of a large number of burnt paint spray cans, and a few other various metal objects. Where would archeologists of the future be without sub-morons today?

Friday Mar 11, 2011 #

run 34:00 [2]

Morning wake up out in The Flats, the site of recently observed survey. Today there was still more to observe--this time a crew of three with a pickup and another, larger truck outfitted with an auger was out in the survey area. It seemed like an ideal opportunity to find out what was going on, so I ran over there and asked one of the guys. He said he had no idea at all and that "we're just doing the work."

Clearly it must be some sort of ultra-secret project, possibly even involving specially engineered, high tech, tumbleweed collection systems.

skiing 48:00 [3]

Quick later afternoon ski with Ted, at his pace. Too overcast today for any melting, and therefore the trails weren't exhibiting much iciness.

run 1:12:00 [3]

Snow trails at Happy Jack.

run 40:00 [2]

biking 1:24:00 [3]

Windy and mild.

skiing 1:01:00 [2]

First day of the season where the sun hit the trails hard enough to produce some glazing, making for some skittering stretches by late afternoon.

run 47:00 [2]

Wednesday Mar 9, 2011 #

run 34:00 [2]

A lot of brand new survey was up out in The Flats. Since it's probably not for a new regional mall, I wonder what it could be for?

skiing 1:44:00 [3]

Conditions were 99% fantastic, and the other 1% was very good. The end of winter dwindle has started; despite the great conditions and full sun, there weren't many skiers out on the trails.
