Orienteering 1:32:00 [3]

Hung daze 2. Very nice day out for the wind farms, and pretty nice for running too. Hope it doesn't get too much nice for the wind farms though, otherwise controls could start ending up in Nebraska. It's a bit hazier out than it has been at any time earlier this summer; I wonder if that has anything to do with the big California fires?

At any rate, a fine day to be dazed, and a good thing that, because the official Daze Launch Sequence has been initiated, and the countdown is underway!

Orienteering 1:45:00 [2]

Control hanging--got the controls out for Daze day 1 and the One Cowboy Relay, finishing up just as daylight was also finishing up. I'm already missing it still being light after 8 o-clock, and it's only been a week! It was cool (50s) and overcast while I was out--perfect for running. Saw many horsy peoples leaving their horsy camp for home.

I'm very glad to see that seed season is winding down now. Folks here for Laramie Daze will have little idea of all the spear grass fun they will be missing--if only they had been here 2 weeks ago! On the other hand, there is nothing that brings tears of joy to sock manufacturers quicker than the thought of orienteers out in the meadows and prairie during seed season.

Orienteering 1:26:00 [5]

Killer Bee Test Loop, at dusk. Better effort than time, so maybe my legs were more tired going in than I thought. The more cheerful thought though is that the ravages of aging are winning! ; )

Strangely, I didn't see a single deer or elk while out. That almost never happens in this area, and especially not around dusk. I'm not saying TomWow! with his hideous blue, massive hat contraption is to blame, but can that be ruled altogether? Probably not.

run 3:07:00 [2]

Ran in some thin air over at Libby Flats, kinda rogaine style, but kinda not, because I don't do that stuff no more. Anyway, I was running off the USGS. Many elk, few ATVers, no hunters. Gorgeous day.

Orienteering 1:34:00 [4]

Ran a course from last year's US Champs, at Diamond Bay. So fine!

Orienteering 2:29:00 [3]

Course setting the Rocky Mountain Goat at Remarkable Flights. This course is going to be exceptionally fun and fast, and snakes through some brand new terrain added just in the past few weeks! Ran right through one huge elk herd. They had no idea what hit them. Also, right as I was finishing up in the last moments of light (well, really it was dark and I wasn't ready to admit it yet), I ran right by an attack badger. I was lucky it didn't come after me, because if it had, I would have had no chance and would have had no idea what hit me. They can take off about a leg a second with one clean bite to the thigh.

With this, all the course setting for Laramie Daze is done and ready to go!

Orienteering 2:06:00 [3]

Course setting at Happy Jack--mostly in new terrain that has never been used before.
