biking 1:15:00 [3]

Pretty decent biking weather for so late in the year.

Orienteering 1:27:00 [3]

Pretty nice time out at Twin Boulders. Ran across a decent sized herd of elk--about 40 head or more, and all cows except for one young bull. At a guess, that's an indication of some successful hunters this season.

Note

I've finished drafting up what little survey I accomplished this year--an incredibly long winter and a long mosquito season didn't help matters--and it looks like the mapped area in the Laramie Range now comes to a little over 136 km2. All contiguous; I'm pretty sure this is the second largest area of contiguous O' map in the US, and perhaps in the hemisphere (though you can't entirely rule out a surprise in Barbados, I suppose?)

Hope to tack on some more next year, but you never know. I have a feeling one of these years winter is going to over-sprawl summer completely. That plus pesky year round snowsnakes would be a formidable challenge to overcome.

Orienteering 1:41:00 [3]

Many mule deer, no cats. Grateful for the latter. Some wind offset by rather mild temps. Cool crescent moon.

skiing 59:00 [3]

2" of new snow overnight made me think it was reasonable to take a quick trip through part of the trail net at Happy Jack. Light, white, bright, and fluffy.

run 1:47:00 [2]

Snow trails.

run 2:07:00 [2]

Snow and blast.

run 1:54:00 [2]

Terrain. Mild.

Wednesday Nov 23, 2011 #

biking 1:16:00 [3]

Out to the airport and back. Not freezing.

run 1:49:00 [2]

Mostly on snow trails up in the hills, plus some snow terrain.

Orienteering 1:29:00 [3]

The sign on the interstate warned of 50+ mph winds. The key piece of information was the "+". It was very, very windy.

But not cold. Warmup pants with a wind liner were a good substitute for regular O' pants even so. Sunny and nice.

Had hoped to go biking when I got back home, but that was clearly a ridiculous notion.

skiing 1:08:00 [2]

Time for the swampfox debut of the 2011-2012 season. Snow coverage not at all bad for most of the trail net. We'll see how it holds up over this week; the next few days are supposed to be on the mild side, maybe even getting up over 40F. I'll probably wait for the next snow before going out again. No point in over-doing it.

run 1:16:00 [4]

Intervals on a modified loop from home. Going to have to figure out a new loop--or go with the modified loop I used today--because a brand new apartment complex under construction has encroached into a portion of the old loop.

run 1:30:00 [3]

Terrain. Nice contrast with yesterday. Still plenty of wind, but much colder and cloudier today, with fresh snow on the ground (and some still in the air.) Stark, with little ground blizzards here and there, extending to as much as a few feet off the ground.

Saw one elk leg--detached--lying in the snow. Maybe someone will claim it tomorrow.

biking 50:00 [3]

Nice and windy, and almost warm. I don't know if it hit 50F or not, but it was close.

Sweat was pouring off me like the river Ganges.

run 58:00 [2]

Picked up cans from the site of a sub-moron shotgun fest (they must have bought out the entire contents of at least 5 ammo stores) while a female moose stood nearby and watched.

Thursday Nov 17, 2011 #

biking 1:08:00 [3]

Windy, and nice.

run 1:36:00 [3]

I was dismayed by the way the wind was not up to proper strength as I set out, so I issued a challenge, and I was buoyed by the way the wind responded to the challenge. By sunset, it was strictly rippin, like it should be.

Wednesday Nov 16, 2011 #

run 1:46:00 [2]

Terrain run. Less windy than the past few to start out with, happily back up to full strength as the sun was settin down.

Note

We do have some snow here.

Orienteering 1:47:00 [2]

Tisdags traning consisted of a longish run, light on O' but still some O', and mostly checking out various drainages for beaver activity. Came across one area where some gun happy submorons had shot down at least a dozen trees. They must have been so happy. Didn't see a single 4 legged creature the whole run. I'm sure that had nothing to do with the fact that it's the middle of hunting season. Day 4 of the wind storm, but at least it wasn't quite as ripper as it was the last 3 days.

Monday Nov 14, 2011 #

run 1:55:00 [3]

Why break after 2 days of non-stop killer winds when you can go on to excel with 3 straight days? Maybe we'll get lucky and the winds will not just continue tomorrow, but even pick up additional strength!

Sunday Nov 13, 2011 #

run 1:41:00 [3]

Properly high winds yesterday and today littered Happy Jack with many needles, cones, branches, and not a few entire trees. Tough to wax for trees, I would suppose.

Wyoming's wind energy future remains bright and robust.

Seasonally nice when I started out, but got chillier and chillier as the sun lowered and went behind clouds.
