Note

O' at the Northern Edge (of Diamond Bay). 8.5 kms if run right, longer if run wrong, which was me. If you don't keep your focus, you are not going to go right. Completely stellar day, and so much appreciated after a run of gray days. I made the most of it with some fun orienteering on this chunk of map:

Relatively few people have been out on this chunk of map--a few Blue runners 2 years back, and some Goats earlier than that. By adding on a relatively small amount of map--the unsurveyed area above the line--there is a perfectly usable amount of area for a Classic distance event. The terrain changes markedly at the east end of what is mapped, and everything east of the mapped area is quite a bit tougher than might be guessed. A lot of the open area is clad in enough sage/bitterbrush cover to make for some chewy running, and all of the detail that shows is there because of rock.

Why the difference between east and west here? It's granite underlying the area, but the texture of the granite is probably changing from a coarser grain (west) to a mediumish grain (east).

Surveying time is just about out for this year, but this is one of the places I am eyeing for next year. Not much more than 1 km2 of additional mapping will yield a perfectly fine map with the added bonus of great access along its entire length. That might not matter to some, but if you are putting out water...
