Killarney-Beaufort-Cappanalea-Glencar-Killarney
Weather definitely won today. Thought it would be nice as it was bright when I got up but when I started there was a bit of a shower for the first 20 minutes which included a few hailstones. Also a tough headwind out towards Killorglin. Found the going tough.
Dried up before Kilgobnet and the sun came out. Wanted to do 2-2.5 hours on the bike. Started to feel like a shorter spin would be a good idea as was a bit cold. So decided to head up to the Board of Works, but changed my mind and thought a detour to Cappanalea and Glencar wouldn't add that much to the spin. I was wrong, it did!
Tough climbing to Cappanalea, some long steep enough drags, along with a couple of even steeper but short digs. Descent towards Glencar was a bit tricky, narrow with grass in the middle, decided against the direct route to Glencar when I saw a wide strip of grass in the middle. Happy enough with how the climb went to Lough Acoose. Could see grey cloud to the west so was hoping to stay ahead of the weather back to Killarney. I didn't manage it.
Started off not too heavy but rain got heavier and heavier. Was doing my best to keep the pace going, which i'm happy with. The tailwind was necessary. Hands started to freeze at this stage too. Gloves had soaked through. Lot of water on the road getting into Killarney. In my mind I was thinking if I got a puncture I was in big trouble as no way i'd be able to change it with frozen hands.
The road up home was tough too, legs gone. Dried up the last few minutes though!
So ended up getting the time I wanted on the bike but with more climb than I expected and a lot wetter. Literally straight off the bike into the shower when I got home. Not easy to get the layers of clothes off with frozen hands.
