Leinster 3 Day 2016 - Day 3

Based on this reversing chasing start idea I expected some company today with Cillín and Colm. But Colm didn’t make his start time. Lost time on the 2nd control, went too far, ended up on the other side of the green, so had to come back across. Could probably have done better going to 3 too. 6 was uphill through the felled area, not that great a going. 7 was easy enough, but then came the leg I was expecting, to the top of the hill.

Torture

Caught up with Cillín on the climb, but neither of us were moving fast at this stage. Just trying to get up high and out of the heather. Once at the top things got interesting, mist. Didn’t see Cillín so was careful getting to 8, summitted I suspect between 10 and 11. Not completely accurate in the mist but nothing significant. Downhill leg then out of the mist to 12. Messed it up. Was hoping to find boulders on the track, didn’t, and ended up northwest of it in the boulders. Came back and found it not really knowing where I was though.

Also heard some thunder up on top, so was getting a bit concerned in case there was lightning, was soaking wet at this stage too after the heavy rain.

This was followed by another long leg across the bog to 13. Hesitated close to the control but got it ok. Next up was another downhill leg into another area of the map I was expecting and not really looking forward to. Wasn’t moving too well down here. And then saw Cillín to my right, but disappeared again. Got 14 but don’t think I was too clean doing it. Tried to push on going to 15 knowing that Cillín was close. At 17 I saw Jonny head off in a different direction to where I went, not sure where he was going. Then on the way to 19 Will caught be up so tried to stick with him.

Went over on my ankle near 19, ouch, tiredness at fault. Lost him at 20, my direction was off. Then crossed the road to get the last couple catching Conal at some point. 24-25 I didn’t really understand what was going on.

Then the run in to the finish where I took it easy, no need to use any more energy than I needed to.

An enjoyable 3 days in Leinster. Weather was good apart from today.

Best do a plan for the week. At this stage it's a very tired start to the week. Leinster 3 Day was physically challenging but no harm in that.

Fun week this ahead, Sweden tomorrow.

Monday - Orienteering (done)
Tuesday - Travel to Sweden and do some of that orienteering
Wednesday - Orienteering training
Thursday - Orienteering (sprint test race)
Friday - Orienteering (middle test race)
Saturday - Rest (will probably need it)
Sunday - Orienteering (long test race = Swedish epic since its 15k)

Leinster 3 Day - Day 2
Lough Firrib

Tough start up that hill but found the line of boulders nicely so used them to lead me in. 4th control was 1st mistake, not a huge one, and figured out that I was too low quickly enough.

7 was a disaster according to the splits. Knew I messed it up but didn’t think the time loss was that big! Map is not right in the area, fact, well maybe at the level of the control it is, but anywhere below was definitely not mapped. Bit mad considering the features that were there which I couldn’t find on the map. Eventually climbed up, came back, found the renentrant with marsh, and got down to the control from there.

Could feel I was getting tired heading towards 11 so took a gel then.

Down to the bottom of the hill for a control pick. 19 was not fun, uphill. Overshot 20 so lost time there, stayed too high, but saw it below me as I corrected myself. Caught James at 22, but I’d no choice but to let him run away again, had to deal with a CRAMP!!! It got better but lost around a minute. After that the rest of the course was tough, energy was gone.

26 seemed odd, tapes on the ride were confusing, ended up too high and had to come back down to it. Small loss on 27, and then was wet and rough getting in and out of 28. Was glad to be finished.

Note

Just saw the splits from today. I thought it might have been a 3 minute mistake at 7 today but more like 9! Must look into that a bit more next week.

Very very tired now but remembered I slept badly last night. But legs shot too, lack of any longer runs in terrain.

Middle distance is fine but long I'm clearly not fit for.

Saw Colm ahead of me and reckoned he wouldn't make his start time, and then I reckoned I wouldn't make mine either!

Leinster 3 Day 2016 - Day 1
Glendoo

Found the other control on the way to 1. Knew where I was exactly then. Next 2 controls were uphill, lungs not liking it. Then back down again. Hit the bank 5 was on, standing on top of it, but didn’t see the control, descended to the left of it, was going away thinking I was right of the control but saw it behind me tucked under the bank. 6 was more uphill, getting us warmed up for the long leg to 7.

No issues on the leg, apart from lungs hurting going up the hill. Was very boring too, not much to go on, ran on my compass, and ended up slightly left approaching the control.

Used Ruairi Long to help on 8, had caught up with him. Rest of the course was straightforward enough, was able to understand the earthbanks alright. Was a small bit right at 17, wasn’t expecting a gully. Then to 19 down the hill I didn’t like the heather.

Pleased with my performance today. Wasn’t 100% starting today, lungs and HR felt it, still on the mend after the virus during the week. Sunny day so that helped get me motivated to race. A few minutes down on Conor, no excuses there, he’s just faster at the moment.

Some improvement today.
Cold was feeling worse yesterday but a spicy dinner helped clear the head a bit, there was a marked improvement yesterday evening. Those Chilli Wings in Khao are good.

So today starting to feel better but concerned that I won't be 100% tomorrow. But likely that i'll still put on my orienteering shoes at lunch time tomorrow. I've paid the entry fee and the sun will be shining (for the weekend). So maybe tan lines from the headband might be something to watch out for.

Note

6 of the 16 starters on M21E this weekend have their 1st name beginning with C, nearly 40%!

Just passing the time before I escape Kerry for over a week.

Feeling different again today as cold got worse last night. Got more sleep than the night before, interrupted, but much easier getting to sleep.

Was meant to go to Maynooth today but stayed at home. Decided overnight considering I didn't get to sleep until nearly 3am. Chest was bad, breathing was not great.

So stayed at home from work and went to a doctor in Killarney. He said no wheeze in the chest, which i'm pleased about, and likely to be a virus.
I suppose a cold is a virus, but there's more than that going on.
