The weather again this morning is shit. Will cycle later, on the turbo trainer if needs be, run tomorrow (Glanageenty) and o-training on Wednesday. Cycle thursday night with club. Friday I imagine will be another run. Saturday morning I hope there's a club spin on the bike, long. Might end up resting then next Sunday.

Chest is getting better, so this training is all on the assumption that i'll be able to train.

Avg Cadence = 74rpm

Nice and easy on the turbo. Have a couple of sore muscles, mainly somewhere in the left groin. Either run or bike tomorrow, proper training. Since it was recovery I read a book, starting a new one this evening. Weather was crap so no chance of going outdoors, finding it hard to believe that it's July, looks more like November apart from it's bright after work.

Again my sleep is not happening, keep on waking early and not able to go back to sleep. A week of this crap now.

Body is feeling tired today, back aches but legs don't feel too bad. Some stretching needed. Weather is brutal outside so reckon indoors today with the telly. Chest still feeling a bit off.

Again this morning I woke up an hour before my alarm is supposed to go off, it still hasn't gone off. Couldn't sleep so got up and went ouf for a jog around the estate, very short, just to see what my HR would do. It increased but didn't rocket. Still feel a bit off but decided that I can race.

Rás na Ríochta Road
Cappanalea

Leg 1 - Canoe, 2.5km - 25.55
Leg 2 - Hill Running, 11.25km - 1.08.15
Leg 3 - Cycling, 21.4km - 53.07

Woke up at around 6 and couldn't sleep, chest still felt iffy so I threw on some gear and did a couple of laps of the estate to see if my HR reacted badly to exercising, it was normal enough so that meant decision was made to race.

Couple of showers going this morning but ok when not raining. One very heavy one about 9.20 but passed over. We were informed at the safety briefing that we'd be brought down to the canoes and put in the gear before the race started. We headed off at around 9.30. Ended up crossing fields and then along the edge of the lake. No sign of any canoes though. We eventually stopped and there was 1 canoe! Everyone wasn't going to fit into that, there were 26 in the category. Knew that some of them wouldn't be a threat but others looked fit enough. After a while the boats eventually turned up pulling the canoes. Ended up pairing with a lad called Shane. We started and we probably went a bit too far into the lake and therefore got hit with the headwind more than those who stuck to the left hand side of the lake. A guy/girl combination were in the lead and then 2 more lads came past us followed by 2 more, all on our left. We kept on paddling, rarely in a straight line, bit more like tacking in a yacht! With about 500m to go we were the 3rd canoe. Near the end the wind eased and we actually paddled better. So 3rd boat out of the water. One of the guys in the 2nd canoe in seemed to like the water a bit too much getting out, think he ended up to his waist! I stepped out onto a rock. Through the transition I could have been more sensible. We had a timed out session to take off the buoyancy aid but could have done a bit more organising over this time instead of after i'd punched out.

Now it was onto the run, where my strategy was to build up a lead. The girl who was in the 1st canoe was soon passed and then there were the 2 lads, who I felt one of them would be a good runner. They were moving slowly enough when I went passed. Took a few more minutes on the road to pass the 1st guy. Road here was uphill before it levelled out and then went up again. Was on my own once I passed the 1st guy and didn't see anyone else then for the rest of the race. Through the forest and then onto a track running underneath the hill. Up onto the mountain the runners were slipping at times but generally ok. Met Sean Murphy coming against me on the Sport course. He'd a lead too. Looked back as I went up to see if anyone was nearby, no one could be seen, maybe someone near the wood though. Checkpoint at the top of the rise then across the fence. I thought there was going to be a check point on the next high point so went to it even though markers went underneath, nothing up there apart from being windy. The check point was in the Windy Gap. Then there was a long slog up to Seefin, in the mist at this point too as a shower passed over but didn't really have too much trouble, started following a path rather than the markers. Then me the markers again and the 1st guy doing the Rás category. Didn't really notice the climb but hamstrings were complaining a bit so I eased off. When running my HR was high but effort wasn't so putting that down to not being 100%. Plan was to ease off for the descent from Seefin to the bike transition to mind the legs as the descending muscles would be used on the bike. Missed the markers coming off Seefin so ended up on some steep scree so had some fun on that. Then went across to the path where I met a lot of the lads doing the long one coming against me. On the track down to the bike tested my blood sugar and go cycling gloves out of bag, so was kinda taking it easy by now.

Into the transition and on with the cycling shoes once I got them off bike and cycling shorts. Nice descent to start with and narrow roads. Did have to make a quick stop to move sensor on back wheel as it was clicking, must have been knocked in transit and didn't work for race either. Along the lake and to the first hill. Looking over my shoulder still as wasn't sure if someone would catch up, the problems of leading a race! Dropped gears for the climbs and started free wheeling the descents to save energy, but I felt I was moving alright. Avg speed for bike was 24.2, not fantastic but had a lot of up and down, the ups being hard. Legs didn't feel too bad on the bike. Could see some canoes on the lake on my way back up along the lake. The hill that we ran up on the road from the canoe/run transition felt tougher on the bike than it did running! Then a nice descent from there and into the woods around the Caragh River. Got across the first two bridges and then there was a trailer with bales on it blocking the road! So had to go around it on the verge. Was concerned about puncturing but thankfully that didn't happen. Kept on going and was looking out for the last check point in Glencar. Saw a sign pointing left and then spotted it against a wall. Had to jump off the bike to punch, then get back on and face a very steep climb straight away. Didn't last very long and then there was a flat bit before the big climb started, it was tough, very steep at times. If I met a car coming against me there would have been trouble since the road was narrow. Turned right then and the climb kept on going but not has steep. Finally reached the top and then there was a descent before the turn and last descent to Cappanalea. At the top I saw a camper coming against me so had to decide whether to move over or keep going. I kept going and there was room to get by. Turning down the Cappanalea road I'd one last look behind and saw no one. Finished and downloaded after the nice descent with people flagging me to slow down.

Didn't see the second placed person finish, I was probably getting showered. It turns out a woman was 2nd, about 30mins behind. Prizes were very good, well worth heading back later for, new trail shoes which i'll have exchange for a bigger size, and a few more bits. Glad to have done the race and finished.

Still recovering so no training again today. At least at this stage I don't think it's chest trouble, just a bad case of rundownedness. Will head out to Glenbeigh this evening to register for the adventure race tomorrow. Definitely going to race at this stage, even though forecast not the best, heavy showers.

Have spent some time thinking about how to work the race. Wear cycling gloves for paddle, then into the bag to join the cycling shoes and shorts. At the transition from run to bike i'll swap my runners for cycling shoes and throw on a pair of cycling shorts. Even though run takes in mountains i'm going to wear runners as around 25% of the run is on tracks/road. Will have cycling rain jacket (small and light) in rucksack if needed. Not sure if i'll wear a t-shirt or cycling jersey during the race. Will check if I can access cycling jersey pockets with rucksack on later, if I can't then it'll be t-shirt. Also not sure what to do with SI card, think i'll have to secure it to my person somehow as gloves would get in the way for finger as will holding the handlebars of the bike. One of my t-shirts has a zip pocket so that might work. Will have a 500ml bottle of water in the rucksack, not full and i'll put a water bottle on my bike around 50% full. That should get me through. Also will take a few energy gels with me and maybe some chocolate. Because of the weather forecast i'd say I won't need sun glasses.

My goal tomorrow is to be competitive, i.e. win. But i've no idea what the competition is like so that makes achieving this goal a bit harder.

Race strategy is run the 500m from start hard to be first into canoes, then see what the situation is like on the run with regards to who is around me. Will go harder on the climb than on the descents as I don't want to wreck my quads for the cycling. Once on the bike it'll be push as hard as I can, basically what's left in the tank, trying to keep a good pace along the lake before destroying the last hill.

So all I need now is for my body to co-operate.

Taking it easy again. Not as tired but not 100%, still feeling a bit on the shit side so will rest again today.

Starting to wonder what's wrong with me at this stage. I'm assuming it's just a bit of rundownedness. I hope it's not a chest infection, if it is i'm in trouble, but hard to tell. Hoping that i'll be better tomorrow and then can race on Saturday. If i'm not better tomorrow I may spend €45 on a trip to the doctor. I really want to do the race, been looking forward to it, as I doubt they'll give me my €65 back if I don't.

Feeling shit today. Last weekends lack of sleep + long days combined with training the last 2 evenings and not catching up on my sleep has resulted in me feeling crap. Plan for tonight is either:
Option A - Dinner/Bed
Option B - Bed/Dinner/Bed

Went to see "The Guard" last night in the cinema, very funny Irish film.

Went to the physio this morning. Got her to work on my back/shoulders down to my achilles, so pretty much covered everything. Left calf/achilles definitely hurt the most. So at least that hour should keep me going for a couple of more weeks. Will get another physio session before I head to France.

Bike again tonight I suppose.

Tralee-Ardfert-Church Hill-Fenit-Tralee

Nice evening out, 2 in a row in short sleeves, a record for this Summer!

Decided a short spin was best seeing as i'd the promise of a bacon & cabbage dinner in Killarney, was good. Also didn't want to push things too much after the physio earlier. Legs felt alright cycling and were good on the hills. Flew passed a lad near the top of Ballyroe, not out for a serious cycle like me! So went up that hill at a nice pace.

Nothing much of note happend for the rest of the cycle. May have been a small headwind near Ardfert and from there towards Churchhill but didn't really notice.

Seems to me that my bike sensor hasn't recorded any information since last Thursday, need to check it out tomorrow evening but may run, we'll see how I feel.

After getting up yesterday at 5.30am and getting to bed at around 1.30, that meant I was awake for 20 hours give or take as I may have had a nap on the bus back from Silverstone. Saturday was a bit better but still a long day. So very tired this morning. Debating whether to train or not today, will see this afternoon.

Think i'll be on the bike this evening, was thinking of running but left achilles was sore over the weekend. Got physio tomorrow though.

Tralee-Farranfore-Castleisland Bypass-Tralee

Felt tired today but decided I wasn't bad enough not to train. Spent a lot of time on the bike thinking tactics for Saturday. Got a few ideas regarding how to save time during transitions but must decide whether to use 1 pair of shoes or use cycling shoes.

Body was in reasonable shape heading out to Farranfore and the pace was good. Think there may have been a tailwind. Turned for Castleisland and pace was still good. Closer to Castleisland I felt the wind get a bit stronger and it was definitely stronger on the bypass. Speed was still around the 30 mark.

On the road back to Tralee I was cycling into a headwind but making good time. The markers went by quickly, the quarry and then O'Riadas. At O'Riadas a TRACTOR pulling a trailer with a YELLOW DIGGER on it pulled out parallel to me. I got ahead on the inside but the tractor then came passed me. I pushed hard to stay with the tractor and managed to tuck myself in behind the trailer. Was able to keep pace with the tractor which was about 38kph. So stayed there until the tractor turned off for Ballymac to the right. Once I was out of the slipstream the wind felt strong. But was nice to use the tractor when I could.

Legs felt ok this evening my left achilles was sore over the weekend. Original plan was to run this evening but changed that to a cycle to mind the achilles until after physio tomorrow.

British F1 Grand Priz, Silverstone

Early start and did not feel too bright this morning as a result. Long day too by the time the race was over and we got the bus back to London it was time to get to the airport. Didn't feel too tired until between Farranfore and Tralee but made it back in one piece.

At Silverstone today for F1. Flight got in late last night, delayed by an hour. So was tired getting to bed. Up early to get a train into London for the bus out.

Qualifying was good but not happy with rain at the end of Q3 which I felt messed things up a bit. Wanted more action in the last couple of minutes.

Had a good Italian for dinner too in Twickenham.

Tralee-Ballyroe-Abbeydorney-Tralee

Alarm went off at 7 and I certainly didn't feel like getting out of bed. Struggled with the thought of staying in bed but decided I might as well take a look out of the window, if it was raining then I could just get back into bed. Looked out and it was dry, a few clouds though. That decided it, got up and threw on the cycling gear but nearly forgot the HR strap, was out on the road when I remembered that.

Set off at a comfortable pace all the way up to Ballyroe but near the top it started to rain, and was heavy for a short time. Then on towards Abbeydorney. This stretch seemed to pass very quickly, was passing the nursing home before I realised it.

Kept pushing all the way from Abbeydorney to Listellick, big ring all the way. The more gradual inclines were fine but the last steep bit hurt. Then onto the descent back into Tralee.

The Bracker O'Regan road back across to Mounthawk was not nice, it was raining again and I was cycling into a headwind. So didn't feel like I was going anywhere in a hurry. Then turned onto the Caherslee road where I realised that the road is very bumpy for a few 100m, it hurt. There was some new surfacing on the Tralee side of Abbeydorney which means between Tralee and Abbeydorney is a nice bit of road.

Pleased to have got out of bed this morning but didn't really have a choice since i'm not doing anything for the rest of the weekend apart from whatever walking I end up doing.
9 AM

Note

Decided i'll enter the Road category of the Rás na Ríochta, the long one would probably push me too far, whereas the road one will suit me nicely.

9 turned up in total this evening so only 1 group. Felt the pace was very handy all the way out to Castleisland and then off up towards Lyracumpane. I hit the front for the last bit of climb so pushed on with Ken leaving the rest in our wake.

Then had a breather while we regrouped. I stayed at the front for the trip down to the Cross and then left towards the dump. Pace was nice along here and up towards the dump.

Then came the long descent back to Tralee. I actually hit my max HR going down. Really had to push hard to stay with the pace. I still don't understand how the speed other people get going downhill compared to me. I think it's a matter of body mass, they have more than me. I can go up hills faster but pay for it by going slower downhill as less for gravity to play with.

Legs were ok this evening once they woke up. Think I preferred this spin to what would have happened if the fast crew had shown up. Not sure if they were frightened off by the rain today (dry for the cycle, although spray off road annoying at times) or that they are off to do the E'tape.

Going to try running this evening for a bit, out to Glanageenty. Will aim for 2 laps but may decide to do 3 if the 1st lap goes alright. Left achilles is a bit sore. Think Inov8s rather than runners would be best, been raining so could be slippy. I will also tape my left ankle, not in the best of shape.

Really need to train and this weekend will be 0 mins due to F1 trip.

Glanageenty (2 laps)
Lap 1 - 31.52
Lap 2 - 35.53

Felt good to start off with, first hill was fine as I ran past John Lenihan (The Legend) who was out walking. Probably looking at what next to improve on the trail.

After a while it started to rain and I mean pour. Got drowned for around 10mins then it dried up and stayed dry. Was thinking i'd manage 3 laps at this rate. Got back to the car to see my 1st lap was sub 21 and I was surprised at that as i'd taken the downhills and sharp turns easy to mind my left ankle.

At the start of Lap 2 my left hamstring started to ache a bit so I stopped to stretch it. Didn't get worse but decided that 2 laps would be enough. My decision was also aided by feeling shite, body just gave up. Once I got up the 1st hill I kept on going but not at a very good pace. I knew this lap was going to be bad. Made it back to the car easily enough. Think the lack of running in recent weeks probably affected today and the long day yesterday travelling also must have had an input.
