Orienteering 1:23:30 [4] *** 11.0 km (7:35 / km) +300m 6:41 / km
spiked:14/25c shoes: Inov8 X-Talons 212

A day to forget, barely spiked half the controls. Good strength, no issue to last the course, just lacking speed in the second half.

1. (5:21, +2:58) (5:21, +2:58)
I had a plan and set off briskly. But I became nervous when I had been running downhill a while and didn't see the ride (which turned out to be quite indistinct). Furthermore distracted by a runner below in the final loop. Eventually climbed to steam and bearing back in.

2. (4:51, +0:18) (10:12, +2:55)
Tried to stay positive but I was a little frustrated for obvious reasons. Easy control, slow climb. Ran most of it but the heather was rough in places, also found the cold air tough in the lungs.

3. (2:41, +0:06) (12:53, +2:43)
Better now, easy leg along the slope. Picked out spur halfway.

4. (2:56, +0:19) (15:49, +2:57)
I never noticed crossing the track. Suddenly the land was so flat I realised I was not where I thought I was. Quick relocation and I was just a few metres from control, lucky enough.

5. (2:01, +0:08) (17:50, +2:38)
Starting to get some flow. Across the flat stuff and up and over a few hags. Spike.

6. (2:48, +0:08) (20:38, +2:27)
Ran with the hags for a while, off line but meant less hopping and easy attack of control.

7. (2:48, +0:13) (23:26, +2:15)
Yes, this race is going well again. Cautious around halfway but it all clicked and into the control.

8. (1:18, -0:11) (24:44, +2:04)
Best split, nice. Hit the marsh then good visualisation, knew where the control was going to be.

9. (3:57, +0:05) (28:41, +1:58)
I had been reading a lot of the detail since 1 and it was nice and fluid. Up to 9, just unsure at the end but no issue. Saw Eoin flapping around.
I was the quickest around the course from 1-9.

10. (8:49, +5:03) (37:30, +6:52)
Then disaster. Followed my compass and was looking out for the stream just before the control. I did hit it but far too low, dragged by the slope. Took a while to relocate. I let Eoin get into my head now.

11. (1:20, +0:01) (38:50, +6:53)
Reading detail

12. (1:27, +0:25) (40:17, +7:18)
Moving nicely, good visualisation. Flew down the hill, too far, silly climb back up but did push it.

13. (7:00, +2:04) (47:17, +9:22)
Originally planned to go high but then decided to go low as the control looked easy off the huge spur before it. Well I couldn't find it for a while. Too high and too short. Started looking to early.

14. (6:10, +0:51) (53:27, +9:17)
Could see Eoin on the horizon and wasn't in the most positive spirits. Headed up the river to 14. Deer. Wasn't sure where I was heading when I broke off the river but kept to the compass and saw it to my right.

15. (2:24, +1:51) (55:51, +10:55)
Horrendous leg for me, bad direction. Right re-entrant just too high, then too lazy to run, just standing around. Eoin punches before me.

16. (6:11, +0:21) (62:02, +10:01)
My pace was helped by Eoin here because it wasn't feeling like a race anymore. Should have stayed positive. Easy leg anyway but had some rough stuff as I went a little high along the way.

17. (1:57, +0:10) (63:59, +9:55)
Eoin setting a good pace now. Doing my own orienteering, and happy with it, knowing where the controls will be but Eoin is showing me anyway. He is slowly getting away, strong, stronger, but I'm also not in the mood with this performance so far.

18. (1:42, +0:03) (65:41, +9:58)

19. (1:25, +0:04) (67:06, +9:59)

20. (1:01, +0:05) (68:07, +9:44)

21. (5:17, +2:28) (73:24, +11:57)
Eoin ahead a good bit now. Dissapears when I crease myself on some slippy stuff. Push to keep up but this only results in me running over the very indistinct track, needed to pay attention for that one. Feel I've gone too far and look back up the hill. Control is above and its a rough trek through heather to get to it.

22. (4:18, +1:19) (77:42, +13:16)
Race feeling is definitely gone now and it's half-reading the map, mind half elsewhere hit and miss and miss sort of stuff.

23. (1:58, +0:31) (79:40, +13:39)

24. (2:32, +0:48) (82:12, +14:26)

25. (0:57, +0:06) (83:09, +14:24)

26. (0:23, +0:06) (83:32, +14:29)

I had been thinking about the league before the race when I noticed I was in with a shout. Might be a reason for my mistake to one as I panicked and lost the head immediately when the ride wasn't clear. 10 was just a bad hit or miss plan, should have aimed high to the big gully. Everything after that was probably just distracted after previous mistakes. Happy with 1-9 but really need that consistency through a whole race, a consistency I haven't really ever had through a whole race at race pace to be honest. Need to practice on the concentration seriously because before every mistake I was thinking of something other than the race.

Nice area and an interesting course by Aonghus.

A short tempo from Drumcondra - Botanic Avenue - Hampstead Park and back. There was a gradual incline up to Hampstead Park. My stomach was a little uncomfortable, I'm assuming from the food that I ate earlier. But other than that I felt decent.
