Woke to rain then it looked like it was clearing then at about 10 it was snowing fairly heavily but not sticking. By 11 the road was drying and I was in bright sunshine so setoff down the Madelane. There were quite a few people coming up I counted from about a quarter way down and saw 24 byt the bottom. At the actual road junction in the village there were something like 20 people milling around on bikes and various supporting cars and vans. I set off up and after a few km got past by a pair with similar kit on abour 20-30m apart I upped the pace a bit and was about 30m off for a few km till the realy steep km where I got back to the one person and he hauled in his campanion after anouther km and we went past him. Turns out all the people were Dutch doing a charity week long event cyceling from Italy to Holland. There were about 500 all told so I was just in amongst the early starters / quicker ones like my pair. They had started today and done the col de la croix de fer already. Once my legs were going I was climbing well and eventualy the quicker of my pair said he was letting me go which was fair enouth as they had another pass on the way to a finish in Annecy. I kept on pushing keeping the hrm in the 150s to the top where made a donation to the course with onr of the helpers and headed back to the van.

A rather late lunch made later by having to wait to 2.30 for the shop to open to get some bread. Was warm and sunny in the van so set off u the col du Glandon in short legins and short sleaves after the long stuff of the morning. A lot slower going and after a few km the sun had gone and it was decidedly chilly all the way up to the extent that I put my cag on with 2km to go. Top bit was steep and hard work. A quick edition of overtrousers and I set of straight down and froze for most of the decent only warming up a bit at the flat bit where I got my legs going.

Quick loop around the Col du Granier which has a host of diufferent options up to it. I though the one I took down was going to be steeper than what I went up but I was wrong there is a distinc tough bit with bits at 14% in the route I was doing and quite a stretch at 9% befor that. It's only the upper bit on the more main road that is at a lesser gradent. An aufully lot of people out ob there bikes today lots of family groups down on the bit at the bottom. must of seen 30-40 people all told. Plus 7 rollerbladers.

Up and down the Col du Plainplais. was going to do it from the top but it was still drizzling so drove down and gave it a bit more time to dry off. Nice and cool and it had stoped raining by the time I got to the top. Still put my cag on to come back down.

Loop with Mont Du Chat and the Col de l'Epine. Chat was not quite as steep as advertised but still moistly over 9% but it was 3 km further than advertised so still a very stiff climb. The figures in the book may match the other side which seamed steeper but shorter. I past 3 people going up it on roler skis as I went down they were not together a good km between each of them. was feeling a bit tired at the bottom of the Epine but got into a good rythm going up it. Coming down I took a gravel road option for about 5km was a bit rough for 80psi sliks but meant I mist some extra climbing. The tarmac at the bottom of it was realy steep would of had me well into the granny ring if going up.

Loop from the top of the Semnoz. Amazing number of people cyceling up the route I took down (easier than what I went up) I must of past at least 20 bikes. Far more than I saw cars. Realy nice decent route warmed enough by the sun not to be too cold. No real effors for 25km... A bit busy along by the lake got on the cycle path after a bit but that was just as busy. The Acent was great, mostly in trees and nice and cool feeling. just a steady pace not pushing hard. Got past by someone about 8km from the top but he went by quick enough for me not to contemplate following.

Loop with the Le Revard climb. Nice start and I was taking it easy in the heat. I still realy suffered on the climb. The bottom bit is all in the sun and I was recording 33C on the box. The mess a third of the way up is where I stoped for water and a bananna and acidentaly started a new log. I have had to stich them together manualy but have not bothered to fix the altitude anomaly. I then set out and left my glasses behind only realising .5km later hence the up and straight back down again. Got into the trees a bit latter on and things coold off which helped a lot. still the legs felt done in by the top.

From close to the top of the Cormet de Roselend down to the lac then over the little top of Col du Pre and down a very small and steap road to Areches then on to Beaufort and up the climb of Les Saisies. Instead of retracing I went along to Bisanne and decended more small roads from there to Villard-sur-Doron. Then back through Beaufort and up the main Cormet de Roselend road. Legs definatly need an easy day very heavy feeling. Pushed more at then end when I got past by someone but could not hold onto him but then he stoped for water so I got another go. Not as hot which is good, high cloud and the odd spot of rain, back to the van before anything heavy.

Log missing first 2km as some issue with reseting the trip. Not clear what less in the log.file than was on screen possiblly a fat issue? Had to get the box open to force a reset, then broke the wire to one of the displays so will been to fix that. Baybe I should look at the watchdog options as well as getting access to the reset button without taking everything to bits.

Up to meribel and back. Very steady start it was very very hot. goiing up looking for the shade all the time. About 2/3 of the way up I started coming across mountain bikers with numbers warming up on the road. There was a round of the French MTB champs taking place and the Elite XC men were starting in 20 minutes. Got past on the road by someone in a french Champions jersy... By the time I cam back down they were well underway so I stoped to take a good number of pictures and take in the atmosphere. Check out the sumer 2010 gallery.

Fairly steadily going on what may be the bigest climb in the book although I am not sure. 37km 1800m up les montee Belleville acording to all the KM markers basical up the valley to Val Thorens. Probobly a bit long for a recovery ride but I did it at that sort of effort. Got overtaken comming down hill again did not have high enough gears this time I mas out at about 55km peddeling and got past at about 60 by someone still pedeling hard probobly doing 65-70. Nothing like as many bikes pout todayt as yesterday.

First realy long day of the trip. From 2km off the top of the petit st-Bernard. Down to Ste-Foy-Tarentaise then up the climb to Tignes. Down and though the tunnels to Val-d'Isere and the high climb to the Col de Iseran at 2762m. Then back down and on the main road to the base of the long graduel climb back up to the petit st-Bernard. Took the Tignes climb steady and was going to do the same on the Iseran but with about 10km to go I got past by a guy how I could just about stick with so I just kept on following him to the top. A lot of people on the climb I past 10+ going up including a family groupe with a girl how looked about 7 or 8 leading the way. I did not spend long on thr top there was a chilly breeze. About 3km down just costing I got past by the guy I had followed up. there was no way I could stay with him down he was very confident and quick around all the bends probobly pulled at least a km out of me in 10km down when I stoped to have some food. I was feeling OK generaly untill the flatter bits just befor the start of the final climb when it was obvious that I was suffering a bit. The final climb took about 2 hours and I stoped about half way for more food and a bottle fill up. I was fairly steady on the top bit after the stop it helped that it was cooler.

Grand st. Bernard pass. I was not into doing all the swiss side on the main road as there were quite a few traffic lights inside the covered bits which were not going to be very safe. So I did the old road over the top from both sides. First the swiss then the Italian. The swiss side is by far the steeper. 8 to 10% for 6 km. The Italian side is a better bigger road at a lesser gradent but gose on a lot longer than the swiss side befor joining the main road. Just took it very steady, first proper outing at altitude so not a good idea to push too mush.

Up and down the Col des Mossess. Nice climb and I was feeling fairly good although a bit over dressed as the sun came out. Past a couple of people on the way up which helps. Also past a string of cars on the way down when I got frustrated following and waring out my pads. I think I would of been overtaking even in the van but non of the cars were interested.

After spending another wet night in the same spot it was still pissing down when I went and did the Avoriaz climb seting out caged and overtrousered. There was a tailwind on the upper bits which helped up but I was still cold at the top and was starting to shiver by the time O got down to the van and the heater still in the rain.

It had been raining none stop since yesterday afternoon. There was an hours break this morning so off I set at 11am intending to do another figure of 8 finishing with the two climbs from this years tour the Ramaraz and Avoriaz. I headed though Les Gets again and the road was even drying out going down but by the bottom of the Ramaraz there was rain in sight and it came on about 200m up and I put my cag on about 600m up in the shelter of an averlanch cover. By the top it was torential and considerably colder than yesterday. I added overtousers to the mix and headed slowly down the stream of a road freezing. I warmed up a bit back up to les gets but was not going to tempt the Avoriaz climb and went straight back to the van and the heater.

Figure of 8 over the Col de Joux-Plane then down to Morzine and up the Col de la Joux Vert down the main Avoriaz climb to Mozine andina and back though Les Gets. The Joux-Plane was nice it's a good steep climb with a realy steep bit in the middle. I ended up pushing it fairly hard as I was feeling good. In the cloud on the very top so put cag on for the decent which was just as well as it started spitting with rain and by the start of the second climb it was pissing it down so the cag stayed on for a genteler paced climb in the rain. Again some steep bits half way though the village. Put my overtrousers on the the decent to Mozine and took it very causiously, breaks were squeaking like nobodies buisness. Road straing though town and up the climb to les gets to get warm again then kept on pushing the decent and allthe way home. It was either keep pushing or get way too cold, I enjoyed the final decent and run in in a masacistic sort of way, you could keep pedeling to keep warm and the corners were not sharp even for the wet the traffic also gave me pleanty of space probobly more than they do in the dry.

With Al from in chamonixe. He was being experimental we started by going up the TMB finish which was very steep bottom gear and having to work hard, no chance of starting if you stoped stuff went on for about 250m of climb had heart rate up to 171. Then we were ment to hit some downhill track to decend but had to push carry another 50-75m worth of climb on a zig zag footpath to get to it. Once there it was getting dark and the decent was far too steep and rought for my liking with the bad visability with just the computer light. I chikened out and went down the track but that was also well steep and rough. Final back into town was actualy very nice bit of track a far more sencible angle then footpaths through town by the river. Knackered after the climb at near as dam it flat out.

Col du Mollendruz. For the first time the book and the ground just did not match. I set off up what I though was the right road but just a bit up it I found a big notice board with a good quality big map on it. The map clearly had the col on it with a good B road going up it and an altitude that matched the book. Problem is it started in a village about 4 miles away. The road I was on actualy went to the top of the hill far further and higher than the description. Another road out of the village headed towards the coll but stoped about 2km and 100m higher up above the coll. There only looked to be dirt tracks twisting in between. I went and re-started on the other village and did the col on the other road which had the right climb but all at a good steady gradent unlike the description. From the top of the coll there were only the expected dirt roads that may lead to where the other road from the village was heading.

The around and up the Ballon d'Alsace which is regarded as the first proper tour climb in 1905. A very stedy gradent 6-7% for 9km on a good big but not too busy road. Pushed on a bit towards the top. That's the last of the Vosege tour climbs now onto the Jura where there are not so many.

was meaning to do 3 climbs today but it was reaning in the morning so just drove to Munster where all three start and found an internet connection. After lunch it had stoped raining enough for the road to dry out by the van so set out. Started pissing dawn after 5 minutes but I was on my way by then. Very steady first up the Collet du Linge 975m where 10000 french men lost there lives in world war I. There is a big recreation of some of the battlefield with trenchech and barbed wire etc. they wanted 5 euro to go around so I past on that. Then down to about a third of the way up the Col de la Schlucht which is a very well graded main road at 4-5% for 12 km where I joined it. I was glad of the flashers in the fog I went though both uip and down had them on full power so at least the cars had a chance to see me. Worst of the rain was in the last 5 minutes comming back when it realy came down hard, luckily I was decending with my cag on anyway.
