Cycling (road) 55:07 [2] 21.5 km (23.4 kph) +140m

Into town to the map shop to get some scandinavian maps to plan a route with. Also found an MTB guide to europe so will visit some of the scandinavian destinations. Got rained on comming back...

Filand Inn Bok run. Luckily for me we are all getting slower and not looking to go anywhere like as far as we used to. Slow shorter than normal run in the drizzle. took IBP befor the start and ankle not so bad with it.

Running (mixed) 30:00 [1] 4.0 km (7:30 / km) +50m 7:04 / km

Westbury. Went to go with Mikes group but ankle painfull along field so just joged by myself down to iron bridge along the top and back almong the side. Lots of stretching stops. I was hoping that after a week off the ankle would be OK but no such luck. got the legs streched out a bit so hopefully will be POK with the O club tomorow with an IBP befor going out.

Cycling race (TrailQuest) 3:59:30 [5] ** 63.0 km (15.8 kph) +1440m
spiked:26/27c shoes: Scale

4 hour TrailQuest from AttenDale northen penines. Good outing 565 for first next best was 512. All but 3 checkpoints. Weather was far better than expected mainly dry some light rain but I never put my cag on. gale force SW wind mad some bits very hard. Started into the wind for a good hour with some bits of bike push over sogy ground. Turned around and came back down and on road for a bit very fast then out over the next more section. Was firmer but having to pick small tracks though the heather so not quick riding. Was going realy well for the last hour. had a number of controlls I could drop but generaly downwind I was flying and got them all although the last km uphill into the wind was hard.

Note
(rest day)

Not the Wasdale to Honister BG support I had expected. Rods legs fell to peices comeing over Scarfell, I gather just getting down was very hard. No excuse with the weather this time it was just about perfect. I think he is gaining more respect for the BG!!!! A 2.17 marathon is one thing but 16+ hours on your feet over rough terain is proving a bit harder.

Note
(rest day)

Rest today, can just feel the back of my left knee so going to skip the Red route at Mabie which is a pitty as it is a realy nice little track. Looks like I am supporting Rod from Wasdale to Honister tomorow evening. If he is on the 20 hour schedule it will be light but if he has sliped it will get dark during the leg. Hope I do not slow him up over the stony ground.

I am going to miss the action on Vontoux which is a pitty.

Cycling (MTB) 1:12:56 [3] 19.0 km (15.6 kph) +360m
shoes: Scale

AM Red route at Newcasleton on the Scale. I like this route better than the Kileder stuff. Breezy and dry but wet on the trail. Nice little loop.

Cable came out twice on the Scale need to get a ruberband clearly to keep it on on the rough stuff.

PM Ae red route. Have done the first and last third of this befor in the dark but the middle was bit was shut. The Scale was not the best bike for this trail it is very routh lots of stony stuff on a level and I just could not get up the nessasary speed. Blur would of been a lot better probobly. Was pushing quite hard but starting to feel knackered at end. Done alot of singletrack this week and I think it's catching up.

Cycling 1:46:34 [2] 28.7 km (16.2 kph) +540m
shoes: Blur

AM New LewisBurn red route at Kielder meant to be 13k started about 1.5k from start. About 3 km of good solid undulating singletrack then 3 km of fire road climb. Then a very steep zigzag climb and some big solid boardwalk that was wide enough for 2... close to the top of the hill there is a T junction on the boardwalk sihn was right but I went left to see what was there and got onto what I guess will be more new singletrack that was still missing the top coat so a bit soft and loose. the decent bit of it after a 2k will have berms and some jumps etc. Eventualy it finished at a rough track with no sign and I guessed wrong which way to go and had to backtrack after a km. did not find any more of the singletrack so back on the fire roads. weather was destinctly damp at end was not pushing.

PM Deadwater red route at Kielder. Plus cycle out there and back on road. Started dry but then by the time I got to the singletrack was pissing down and ended up putting on my cag on tyhe big climb up the open moor. Just the red bit skipped the black sections in the wet. Was very disapointed after climbing the big hill to find that there was not a load of nice singletrack comming off it just a rough doubletrack decent.

One of the bearings was gone on the Blur by the end and I also need new cleats on the shoes as I pulled out 3 times the first one comming off standing up on a very steep bit of acent.

Cycling (MTB) 1:27:51 [2] 19.2 km (13.1 kph) +540m

Innerleithen red. I had done quite a lot of this on the Polaris. Not pushing too hard. Top bit of the decent is realy nice should of been a lot quicker. It is a long way up though. Got around in the dry but only just. Somthing broke on the rear derailure on the decent lost the bottom two gears, will have to check it out properly once it stops raining...

AM Glentress black route. Only ever riden some small bits of the trails at the Polaris last year. Nice trail not realy black technicaly for the first 2 thirds then a couple of steeper rocky decents with some drop offs towards the end which I was a bit wussy over. One nasty bit of climbing on the way up a sustained bit of 15+% where you had to be carefully to keep traction on the damp surface. Not too many people evident on the black. I was expecting more as there was a round of the national XC and down hill series at Innerleithen over the weekend and there was evidence of people still being around looking at the cars in the carpark. I past three or four people going up and was caught myself by someone giving it some stick just before the inital high point hung on over the top and was still well in sight after the decent but he realy attacked the next climb and pulled away quickly. Apart form this quicker bit not pushing too hard.

PM Glentress red route. Lots of slower people out in the afternoon went past quite a lot standing still on the various bits of accent but got clear space for decents. Prefered this trail over the black. The spooky wood decent was realy nice and flowing you can undoubtedly loop back and do it a couple of times fairly easaly. Pushed on a bit more than in the morning.

Cycling race (TrailQuest) 4:27:00 [5] ** 60.0 km (13.5 kph) +1150m
shoes: Scale

TrailQuest from Heversham south of Kendel. 4.5 houre rather than the advertised 5 as the Lune is not fordable so some of the further controlls are not out. Paced things well was still strong at end managed to get the one I had left close to the finish. Think I did the route well had to make a choice about 1.5 hours from finish and think I got it right. Quite a lot of very indestinct bridelways guessing a bit though some fields. Lots of gates probobly 50+ which was taking a lot of time.

When I left I had the same score as one other open rider on 480 next best 40 was 461. Not sure how else was still to come.

Running (fell) 4:27:00 [1] 22.0 km (12:08 / km) +1800m 8:37 / km

Pacing Jue and Pete on BG leg over Helvelan like with Rod a month back but in daylight starting at 5.40. They had lost some time on the first leg and were 40 mins late in. Weather had been fairly terible up on Skidaw but the rain had stoped and it was OK for this leg and we even saw the Sun just before Fairfield. Slower than with Rod but on there schedule. Had two IBP before the start and the ankle was basicaly OK.

Thursday Jul 16, 2009 #

Note

Was going to go out for a ride with Kim this afternoon but its been raining so I cryed off and watched the tour. Need the rest anyway before my outing over Helvelan this weekend with Pete and Jue.

Cycling (MTB) 3:45:00 [4] 59.0 km (15.7 kph) +1250m
shoes: Blur

Three shorter trails at Afan with EdricB. Guessing a bit with the time as computer not picking up wheel sensor properly but no reseting like earlier in the week. Out for 4 hours with one puncture just before the last downhill and a stop before the black bit of whites. Did not get rained on but lots of puddles and trails wet. last time by myself I took 3.55 so not that much slower but it was dry...

Going out with someone faster up and down than me was an experiance. I probobly went a bit too hard up first hill as my legs had gone by the big fire-road climb on the Wall at the end. and you know what it's like when the legs go on the bike. Ups were fairly hard but the real punishing bit is that I had to work far harder on the downs than I would by myself just to stop myself being droped too far back. The differance in downhill speed was scary and I have riden the trails 10+ times where as this was Stuarts first outing on them so he had no idea what was comming up. Thats what skill and some downhill racing experiance will do for you.

Into cliffton to meet Ray and hear his pitch for his 60Ghz wireless startup. Wants me to invest my time for shares style. Said i would do some reading up and think about it whilest I was in Scandinavia, better do some research.

Did some diagnosis work on computer funnies. I think somthing is shorting out and I am getting brown-out resets. I changed the battery setup from 2 x 14500 cells to one 18650. I only need 3.0v so the single cell should be good but the voltage reading was seen to be fluctuating normaly I had 3.72V but I saw it down at 3.45 and also the lcd contrast messed up which indicates the regulator chip is not producing 3.0 and the max323 which I am stealing the doubled voltage off for the contrast controll is also fluctuating it's output. Will try going back to the old battery setup and check for anything obvious funny looking.

steady bike apart from last 5 minutes when it started raining and I speeded up to try and get home before the worst of it. Failed as it realy hammered down the last couple of mins.

Cycling (road) 13:00 [2] 5.0 km (23.1 kph) +25m

Quick spin to see if going back to old battery setup fixed computer. Looked OK so will see how it copes with being hammered around Afan Argoed tomorow. Forecast actualy looking better than today so fingers crossed.

Running (field) 50:00 [2] 7.0 km (7:09 / km) +100m 6:40 / km

BOK training from Priddy. Luckily for me we did not go all the way down to Wookey hole as my ankle was painfull after only this shorter run. No more running till the weekend to let it recover a bit before I will have to pill up for my 4-5 hours Bob Graham support over Helvelan. I suvived it OK with Rod a month back so a slightly easier pace with Pete and Jue should hopefully be OK.

kayak (river) 1:40:00 intensity: (40:00 @1) + (50:00 @2) + (10:00 @3) 9.0 km (11:07 / km)

kayak from Monmouth up around big bend and to first island. An hour up not too hard apart from a couple of quicker bits where I had to work hard to get up and the shallowness made paddeling aukward. Even easier on the way back down. two big showers went through sheltered under a tree while first one went though for 10 mins. tried the same on the way back down but it did not stop so just got good and wet in the end. It stoped as soon as I finished.

As I was having my lunch afterwards some cycelists went by. Realised that it was the finish of the FRA forum organised Tour de Gales they just had the 250m climb up the Kimin to do so I drover up after them to offer my congratulations. http://forum.fellrunner.org.uk/showthread.php?t=69...

Running (mixed) 50:00 [1] 9.0 km (5:33 / km) +250m 4:53 / km

With Westbury slow group as did not want to be like last Tuesday with the O club tommorow going from Pridy which can be quite hard. They went around the blazer route so I did it at half the speed of last week sweeping up at the back.

Cycling race (Trail Quest) 3:55:00 [5] * 72.0 km (18.4 kph) +600m
shoes: Scale

4 hour TrailQuest from Pucklechurch. Good to get out on the mtb localy as I just do not ride the local bridleways. It was good to be forced to go down some of them and see what is on offer. There is some good stuff although there was also some that would be better earlier in the year as the veg was a bit close at the side and I curently have tingeling legs.

Went 7, 16, 21, 17, 28, 26, 9, 19, 29, 18, 25, 13, 27, 30, 20, 14, 24. I was then scuppered as I had miss interpreted the instructions with regard to crossing the A46 you were only alowed to cross it west to east at the trafic lights just east of old Soddbury. I of course wanted to go the other way I had miss interpreted this at the starts and should of gone clockwise rather than anti clockwise. had to reverse back past 14 and finish with 6, 8, 15 should probobly of gone for 11 and come in late but had been fairly done in the last bit since realising my mistake so skiped it for the easy 5 mins early finish. Scored 490 which was still good for 1st vet 40 and second overall. Messing up the A46 probobly cost 50 points. Was going well apart from last half hour. Good job it was not a 5 hour event...

Overall winner was Stuart Lynch from Orion Health so at least I was only beaten by a World Champion adventure racer. Not sure what he is doing in Bristol...

shoes: Scott RC1

Severn Saturday run. Titherington, back of prison, North Nibbly, wooton, Hawksbury uppton, horton. Steady pace had a newcomer Peter who will be quite good minus a couple of stones. North Nibbly was to steep for him and he had to walk got up the rest though with a bit of a helping hand and the back in places. Got in in time to miss the rain. Copmuter playing up so bit of a guess on the stuff.

Cycling (mtb) 1:20:00 [2] 16.0 km (12.0 kph) +250m

North Face trail at Grizdale. Never riddend the man made trail before although been arounf the forest lots during Polaris and AR events. Was wet and one bit was diverted. Not too technical but was not going hard with wet surface lots of small rocks. Quite a lot of boardwalk. Managed to come off quite heavily there was an off camber corner that had some boardwalk added at a steap angle. I stupidly went onto this when I was not going anything like fast enough and the back wheel sliped down and I went over the outside where there was quitye a big drop. Landed heavily on my left shoulder feeling rather stupuid. was neer the end so carried on a bit gingerly. Shoulder still saw now back at home.

Was not very impressed with the trail lots of fire road compared to the single track and that was not that special.

Out to club 10 but did not ride with Saunders this weekend don't want to put anything hard in my legs. Did the timekeeping job at the start with Paul the pushing off. He was very pleased with his PB of 1.59.45 for 50 at the weekend as he says you do not expect PBs at 61... As it is he now has the club record on Standard.
