Little outing in Romania Carpatian mountains. Road not good coming up to pass so put knobelies on. Down to high valey from western pass past lake and up eastern pass. There are tow other passed north and south the south one at 2141m was still not open from the winter. Nice and flat by the lake and the road not too bad just no views realy with all the trees.

Run Fell. 4km 300m 20 up 11 down. From pass at 1600 up steep snowy track to treeline then up to near sumit in about 10 minutes then headed on to next higher summit picking way between snowpatches. Feeling altitude in lungs climbing but legs going nicely. Strided out a bit on the decents looking for the snow for a soft run down.

Bulgaria from south side of valley with town of Zlatica down though town where I got lost then up the pass on the other side of the valley. Cold setting out cag and overtrousers ice on the roof of the van. Got a puncture just before the climb proper ended up just spinning my way up though the potholes. A bit more effor in on the climb on the way back especialy when I let a very slow lory with a big JCB on it past with a bit more effort I was keeping up. just span out the top once it turned off legs begining to feel heavy.

I was going to drive over the route but a few hours after I had cycled up the road up the pass was closed and I am now doing a 50 mile diversion....

From the Bulgarian ski resort of Bansko. Just from the center of town up to the high point on the road. got the wrong side of the river going up initaly and ended up off the tarmac and eventualy the track petered out. had to cross the snow melt river with the bike very cold water up to my knees. OK after that once I hit the right road which was nice and new most Bulgarian roads have pot hole up to a foot deep in them so need to be treated with extream respect but this was all nice and new. Little spike in the hear rate going up was when a dog ran along side for 50m barking, no real threat but adrenalin sure has an effect bacause I dfid not realy acelerate or anything. coming back down my wet feet got realy cold.

Put the knobelies on to cycle out onto the mount Athos peninsula but there is a fence like the iron curtain and lots of notices saying you can not cross. The only way you are alowed in is by boat. So just out to half a mile more than where I turned the van around last night. whish I had carried on and realised what the siutuation was.

Went out for a hill climb in the afternoon up to the ski center at Falakro. Looked like a nice center in a high level bowl. Tough climb up there worked my way into it slowly working harder and harder. was decidedly cold at the top put arm warmers cag and overtrousers on for the decent but whiched I had my gloves as my fingers lost all feeling on the decent.

Heart rate going up was recorded perfectly virtualy no missed transactions. Then it re-started at the top after the stop to put on clothes etc and only recorded every 4 seconds. Still my tidy up on the hardware looks to of got things back to how they were before although I still don't know the exact point of the error.

A decidedly lumpy ride around the middle finger. Nothing ever to big but lots of 100m type clibms especialy on the way back when I was feeling tired. Set out trying to be steady but still started feeling it after 2-3 hours and was strugeling back.

I checked the Ant board yesterday which picks up the heart rate signal. I got the ossiloscope on iy and there was nothing to see on the tx from the ant to the bike computer signal looked to be stuck low. buzzing out the path everything looked OK just no data powere and commands to the ant board all looked good. figured I would have to desulder the board and put in the one from the old bike computer. Then this morning I try it first thing just in case and it works for 5 minutes then stops. about an hour before home it just springs into life again. There must be a dodgy contact somewhere or a short to ground. I guess I should put the soldering iron on all the relervant joints.

A relativly flat ride around the western of the three fingery bits. Overcast to start with and set off with arm warmers on but maybe would of been OK without. Fast going compared to recently trying to just be steady but still probobly overquick as I was feeling tired the last hour.

Heart rate data was as normal (every 4 seconds) for an hour then just stoped, so the new battery is not the solution. Time for a bit of hardware debug this afternoon.

Another long day this time a hot one as well. Early on though on the inital decents I was wiching I had my arm warmers as it was chilly on the arms at about 8.30 on the first decent. just going steady was hoping for a fairly flat route for the 50km around the lake but someone managed to put a 200m climb in that even. had lunch earlyish as I was feeling hungry and found a spot with water. This made the afternoon a long one. I was fairly well strugeling and was glad of all the water on route for the excuse to stop and top up the botles was probobly drinking too much if anything. Tool a long time to get to the high point where I ate all my tea time cake which was melting. The decents from here were very nice. The first bit on nice new tarmac then a very well graded bit of road that just went down for ever. Which is just as well as I would not of been up to peddeling too hard. Unfortunatly come the end I got lost in the final town ending up being high up looking across to the road I wanted but having to go back down again to eventualy get on it. It was a tough climb at the end but I seteled into a good slow pace just spinning the pedels. Seamed far harder than 3 days back but then it did not get to 30 degrees 3 days back.

No heart rate data I am fairly sure I need a new battery in the sensor belt.

Rained the top half of the acent so called it a day when back at the van. Also had a slow puncture on the front wheel that I had stoped to put air in half way up.

A proper long ride. Set off just after 8 road was damp from overnight thunderstorm had cag and overtrousers on for the decent overcast and some misty bits to go through took things very steady. Still overcast down on the coast road which was a bit lumpy as expected. Just as I turned inland the sun came out which was not apreciated so much with a big climb to do but good senery. Stoped for lunch towards the top of the climb after 100km. After the final sumit there was a realy fast decent but it had got overcast so I ended up working harder than normal to keep warm. Come the bottom the sun came out ready for the climbing but luckily not for long. I had driving this final bit and had a water stach which I duly stoped at and had some cake.

Unfortunatly I had an incident with a couple of dogs here. They had been about 50m away barking away for about 5 minutes while I had my cake having come from back off the road on a farm style track. When I got ready to move off they got all excited and came racing over as I start up the road. I tryed to do as normal and just ignore them totaly but when they started niping at each other for prime spot by my side I knew I was in trouble and eventualy one had a nip at my calf, not too much damage dune apart from a sock ready for the bin. I am now trying to cycle up hill with just one leg having uncliped the other to fend them off with. They had a try at the shoe but the metal cleat came off on top. Fortunatly at this point a bus came down the other way and did a very good job biping his horn and flashing his light which gave me about a 20m gap. You can see the spot on the heart rate graph as I gave it some serious effort for about 400m with the gap staying at about 20m before the dogs gave up the chace. In future I think I am going to have my multi-tool tied to a suitable bit of string and in my back pocket then at least I will be able to give any troublesome dogs a bit of a headach if they give me grief.

Heading up the final undulating climb things clouded over and it even rained enouth for me to put my cag on for about an hour. I was very timid on the bits of decending I had in the wet as I had spun the back wheel when I had tried standing up on the climb before it. I was happy when the rain stoped for the final 400m worth of acent and I could take my cag off. My legs were remarkably good as well when I put some effort in towards the finish. I had the encentive of the battery geting very low on the bike computer to encorage me to push right to the end and get a good trip record recorded. This is about the limit ride time with the gps going on this battery. In theory the case is just big enouth for a bigger battery (that was the design spec board) but I will have to work an a holder.

Better start 8.40 rather than 10 yesterday. Very steady, long climb was into quite a wind although often from the side with the hairpins. Was actualy fairly cool feeling at the top. No pushing at all trying to save myself a bit for the longer ride planed for tomorrow. Got a bit lost in a village comming back...

Computer far better behaved. re-soldered one of the wires to the top display also reworked the battery wiring which looks to of been the cause of a lot of the trouble. And of course a new knob soldered on. I Tryed putting the GPS into more of it's power saveing type mode but the power saved is marginal and it lost the segnal far more than before so I will be undoing that change. When putting it all back together I tryed the idea of putting some oil between the displayes and the perspec cover this is a realy good thing the diaplyes are now very clear whereas before espesialy the top of was aukward to see with the bright sun on it. I just need to make the top one a tighter fit as the oil is not staying even unlick the bottom one which is a tighter fit. A layer or two a selotape on the back should do the trick.

Very steady outing around peninsular. Got decidedly warm I need to start earlier in the day relay to get more benefit of the cooler morning. Had my first puncture of the trip new pump worked very well.

Computer acted up again with top display stoping would restart once startup code re-run. Behaved ok like this untill just before end when it just froze up totaly?? Once back took it ouit and found that the rotary encoder has broken off the board. It's a three pin device and dose take some stress as it's bolted though the case holding one end of the board and gets the pins bent as I put everything in and out. I have a spair so will have to get the soldering iron out and put it in. Hopefully it will last longer as I am not taking things to peices so much now. I will also look to make sure the board has some more support.

details missing about last 3.5km....

As opposed to 11, 12, 14, 16, 18, 21, 24, 28, 32. luckily the other wheel with the knobely ruber on is OK with the new setup.

A hard day. Only 129km and 2100m but well knackerd by the end and the computer loging was giving trouble as well which with the new one should not happen. Steady climbing the first hill still fairly cool and I did not push. Then a realy quick down and though the big depression and up the far side steadily again. Now another depression this time with a lake in it. Going into here the computer display went to pot and I stoped and took the lid off and gave it all a good shake and a push on all the contacts and it was OK. Somewhere when I stoped to takes some piuctures by the lake it looks to of stoped loging and missed the next 30km. Out of the deprission with the lake then swing around south and start heading west and into a decent wind there was then a bik 10km + long climb that went on forever up into this wind and I realy did start to suffer. Stop for lunch at the top of this and logging looks good for a bit. A quick decent and not too bad still heading west into the wind and starting to look for water which I found before the next little climb. From here on in it was a bit of a drag with just small ups and one decent down but the tempreture was well up heading for 30 and I was begining to feel the heat alot. And just to top things off the loging failed for the last 15 or so KM. Fairly knackered now.

Some maintance to do tomorrow and the chain has started to slip in the middle ring so time to put on the spair I bought to bring with me and a new chain as well I think. Hopefully everything else will be OK and I want have to do a new casset as well as I only have a 11-32 and prefer the 11-28 I have at the moment on the road.

More heart rate dodgyness but don't know if I managed to log any of the details while it was giving trouble. More worried about the total loss of recording which should not happen may put a bit of tape on the micro SD to make sure it can not move, probobly re-format it as well.

A good senic route. About 20km of gravel which I was half expecting. Slow on the decent of this there had been rain overnight and the top bit was slipy clay type mud. Further down it got rocker which was easier with more grip on the slick tyres. The second climb was a bit unexpected I thought the road would follow a river down to the coast but the river was going the other way I think there is a huge deprecion with rivers flowing in from both sides. May get a better idea tomorow as I may be over on the oposit side. Nice cool morning with cloud about abd roads a bit damp. It warmed up during the day and the last climb back to the van was fairly hot and I did put a bit of an effort in. Managing to get hear rate up so rest day done me good. Saw a car full of Brits out looking for flowers...

Feeling knackered up the final climb rest day tommorow I think, befor that did not feel to bad at all but again heart rate not getting up at all. Nice warm day.

No dodgy heart rate again. Testing with GPS off the reception is still bad, I get the inital link very quickly but then it fails to pick up the expected messages 8 times then I think it gose back to a none times based search again and picks up the link quickly again. It looks like the transmition period is off but it looks good in the code. I may make it alterable easaly anyway and have a play with it.

Loop around main road on Island of Lafkada which has a bridge over from mainland. Another good day setting out full on shorts and short sleaved top this time. Went out giving similar persived effort to yesterday but never got my heart rate up 10-15 BPM lower on the hills although I thought I was working as hard clearly a bit knackered. Along the coast to start nice and flat, then up inland and down to the sea about half way. Big climb next and the slight breaze was behind so it got to feel realy hot. Along the top it clouded over and although there never looked to be much there was enough for some big spots of rain and the road to strt getting damp my arms got very cold 10 degrees colder acording to the box.

No dodgy heart rate now I have it loging more information. The reception is funy though I look to only be getting a good sample only about every 4 seconds. You are meant to get them at about 4 Hz. The rate looks very consistant though not random. When I coded it initaly for the new box it was working far better. I think I will try a small test with the GPS switched off as that is the major addition.

110km full day (took some rolls for lunch) loop for my birthday. Far more climb than expected. The inital climb and the big one were expected but at other times instead of the road following the valley bottom it kept going up and down the sides from one Village to the next and they seamed to alternate between by the main river and a good way up the side of the valley. Average incline of 5.3% tells the tale and looking at the graph there is hardly any time during the ride when the incline is on the zero line. The big climb was tough very stepy lower down though an extended vilage 5% one minute 15%+ the next. Higher up things got a bit more alpine style and it was fairly consistant 9-11% with a bit of a slackening at the top. 9.5% from where the road turned off for about 5km and 470m. Doing the other side would of been harder that was definatly steeper I had some seriously hot disks on the way down.

Saw my first Orchids of the trip which was a good excuse to stop and take some photos half way up a hill.

Had more dodgy heart rate readings. I have edited the data to get the graph aceptable. They were downhills again and on the first one I spoted it real time no aero position or anything, the strap was sucure. I don't realy know what is going on I will try logging the raw data to a seperate file to have somthing to look at. It's too bad I don't have an independent reciver to try and work out if the trouble is at the strap end (or my heart...) or the bike computer end as is more likely.

80km loop on mostly quiet back roads a bit too back roads for 5km when I got lost and had to take to the dirt to get somthing like back on track. Slick tyres not nice on the gravel did not stay on any sort of camber so fairly slow for that bit. Will have to get back online and look at the track to see where I realy went. Was overdressed and got too hot full on bib shorts and short sleaved top tomorrow if it is as nice.

In greese did not sleep well on the boat so a very snoozy morning nice by the sea in the sun and warm. Afternoon went for a spin along the road out soug=th of the Albanian boarder. Went as tarmac a lot further than either of my maps indicated (the descrepancies show I will have some fun) nice little undulating spin.

Just along the sea front and back north of Ancona. Amazing how quick you can go without realy trying given a flat road. Average speed of 29kmh average heart rate of 110 max 128 Good road surface where no potholls. Lots of people out on bikes but no one remotly fast for all the kit.

From top of M.Nerone. Not a cloud in the sky can see for miles. Icy road at the top though and well wrapped up for the decent. Down though Serravale, layers off befor the dig up to Moria then up the back of Mt. Petrano stop for food on top and wrap up again befor decending ther giro acent to Calgi The though Fosto to climb the northern side of mt. Nerone, A very small road but I was past by a car going up and a bike coming down so it was somthing of a shock at about 1000m to find the road unridable with snow. the car was parked here. Would of been OK with nobolies on bu the road slicks were no good so a couple of km pushing till all of a suden the road cleared then 400m further on I got to a junction and road where the snowplow had been so OK to the finish which I pushed hard to. Realy nice day to be out. Should of gone further but I strongly suspect that the third big hill road will be shut with the snow as it was as high as here and there was no big mast to keep the road open for.

Run from top of M. Nerone 1500m. This is the first of the 3 big climbs I did last year from the hard Giro stage. Plan was to do the same route again but starting on this hill. Drove up last night in strong wind and heavy rain. Was some thunder during the night and the rain quientend down. Come the morning the van was coated on every side by snow so no biking. A snowplow came up the road about 11 but it's been snowing on and off all day but the tempretures just above freezing. Went for a small jog before tea, feeling very heavy legged I will blame the Altitude which is enough to be noticable. Down the road and along it along the flatish ridge then back. level 2 35 minutes 5 km 150m

from the north a clockwise loop though the hills above Asiago where the Masters I went to was. I remembered the roads being good and twisty and it made a good route. Nothing like an hours climbing to get you going. Put windproof on lots of buffs on at the top watching people ski-ing. saw lots of people cyceling the other way on the middle bit of the decent but only one person going my way all day. Started spoting with rain on last decent so a bit cautious on the corners. Legs fairly knackered at end should of eaten more.

From Campodazzo down the very nice cycle way on the old railway down to outskirts of Bolzano. The climb up west side of the vallet though Collalbo along above the valley to Barbiano back down to the valley to finish on the cycle way again. Sunny day which is just as well hard frost overnight. wrapped up till base of tyhe climb then took windproof up fot the long accent up into the snow. fully wraped up for along the valley and the decent cold feet again but at least dry and nice sun out once back at the van.

Altitude track has some glitches as the GPS was recalibrating it when it re-aquired the fix after loosing it through tunnels. Will change the code to get the calibration done just once when the bike trip is reset. No dodgy HR but I was not getting airodynamic on the decents.

Forced myself to go for a jog as it's been 6 days since I ran. Hilly trails around a wooded nature reserve type place. Would of been better it I had found the notice with the map at the start rather than the end I could of chosen which markers to follow then for a sencible route rather than ending up back at the van 15 minutes too soon could not force myself to do more. 25 mins 4km 150m

Up the Stubaital valley above Insbruck. Started to snow as I set out but I ignored it hoping it was just a shower. Stoped after only 20km, 10km from the end. The snow was starting to stick to the road and I was getting to the bit where it started to climb properly. Put my cag and overtrousers on and started decending. realy hard seeing where I was going glasses missted in the inside and snow on the outside face getting very cold stoped at next bus stop and was glad to find I had another buff which I used over the lower part of my face so just eyes exposed went on without the glasses. Very horrid getting back feet realy cold getting slush splashed over them as the cars went by. Glad for the van heater but still warming feet up was painfull. Now wondering if I will be able to get over the Brenner although it's onfo 250m above my current hright but there is a good couple of inches of snow now and no sign of a letup.
