Map handout with an hour to determine our route. I came up with a 23k loop that seemed clearable.
KDU and I. Guess we should have smiled, :-)
I chose a clockwise rotation figuring most would go up the easier slope to the west first 4, 3, 5, 23, 8, 41, 13. I left 13 with Crazytom and we basically stayed locked together for the next 3 hours punching 24, 29, 40, 15, 11, 42, 39, 33, 14, 44 which we overshot a little, 28, 34 and 43.
Leaving 43 we split up and I continued on to 38, 26, 19, 30, 45, 32 which I overshot to the trail above, 10 which I thought would be tough but I was rewarded for attacking it from the south with a long view of it as I approached, 22, 3, 16, 21 and 7.
Quick bite after punching 30. Thx for the photos Sherpes.
At 7 I took a look at what remained for the last hour and decided to drop 37 which looked like a bingo control with hundreds of rocks in the area. As I continued NW I thought it was a long ways to go to get 27, 36, 31 and 20 so I decided to drop all but 20 and then added 20 to the list as I went straight to 35. As I punched 35 I realized I'd made a mistake and I'd have way too much time left over.
I punched the remaining controls 18, 12, 25, 6, 2, 1 and finished with 34 minutes left on the clock. Having gone overtime in a number of events recently I wanted be sure to avoid that here. Apparently I need to refine my decision-making a little. At this point I prefer the feeling of over-achiever than underperformer.
Great course with awesome woods to run in.
