Canoe-O at Genesee Valley Waterways
Teamed with MW in the kevlar racing canoe for a comedy of errors which ended up turning out to be a lot of fun. Here's the
route..
Within seconds of starting I managed to drop my map into the water so Michelle gave me her map. She now would have to rely on my desciption of the control location whenever she exited the boat to punch the land controls, perhaps not the wisest move but it worked.
We paddled north on the Genesee River getting 31, 33 and 34 on the east side and then hit 32 on the west on the return. As we jumped in the boat another team in a faster carbon boat passed us after getting 32 on the way out.
They were about 20 seconds ahead by the time we got to 35 under the old railroad bridge and we continued to chase them SE along the Erie Canal to 36 and then back to Red Creek where both teams decided to exit and run to 37 and 38 as an out and back. I was able to chase the other runner down and punched 38 before him. Back to the boat and then back to the river where I decided to again get out and run to 39.
The circle for 39 included part of the river, dark green along the river and a trail on the other side of the dark green. Now looking closer at the map I see there is actually a very small light green patch in the center of it as well, oops. I ran the trail and hit my backstop without any luck of finding it. I figured at that point that it must be right on the shore and only viewable from the water so I ran back to the boat and we paddled the shoreline and came up empty again. The only good news was the fast boat in second had followed us onto the trail, were still searching and had no clue if I had punched or not. When we didn't see 39 a second time from the water we decided to move on and get the next control, hoping to maybe find 39 on the way back.
About 1km away I realized that the finish was just past the next control and we were not on an out and back, error number three. We finished as the first team in knowing that we had potentially left 39 on the course without punching but when we discussed it with the course setter at the finish it became apparent that someone had taken the control as it had originally been placed in an obvious location from the water and the trail (in the light green patch...).
Looking back now the correct way to attack 39 would have been to paddle the length of the shoreline first and if we didn't find it by the backstop then to run the trail back as it was closer to that end then the end where I got out originally. Live and learn.
The fastest way to get all the controls was actually on foot and one team tried it but a miscommunication on the meeting point for the runner and the canoe created a 20 minute scamble for them which allowed us to get past them. I saw another team with radios, really?
Of the 3 events from the Convention this week, this one was by far the most fun.
There was a rumor going around of a 24 canoe rogaine north of Montreal next summer potentially. Sign me up!
