Note

Arrived back at Gatwick just after midnight to find out that the train that we had intended to catch had been cancelled and the next train was only at 2:20. Caught that train after all the buses were booked out and arrived at London Bridge at around 3. Took two night buses home and arrived home at 4. Had forgotten my keys at home (and realised and told my housemates) but they weren't very good at answering my phone calls like they said they would. Waited outside for half an hour before being let in. This meant 2 hours of sleep before having to run a workshop for the Innovation Design Engineering Students at University. Very scary stuff...

Moral of the story, don't forget your keys!

16th. Winning time 33:56.

The walk up to the start was pretty brutal so wasn't completely sure what to expect. Runnability was actually really nice in beech/pine forest. Very little undergrowth and thankfully the undergrowth didn't ever decide to fight back. Few hesitations going into the early controls to make sure that I was spot on and knew where I was. Started hitting some of the trickier controls (like 5) spot on so gained a little bit of confidence. Slight mistake to 6 where I ended up too high up the slope. I think that I just misjudged where the pits along the road actually were. Biggest mistake of the day was to 9. I was really sure that I was using my compass but I ended up too far south and wasn't sure which road I was on or had crossed. Lost around 90 seconds here on a really easy control. Wasn't very happy with myself...

Top of the hill was relatively flat so it was easy to see the features that you wanted to hit. As I started to descend I needed to make sure that I knew exactly where I was heading so I slowed down quite a bit to almost tick the features off. Had company from 20 onwards when I caught my two minute man. Dominated him to the finish though. He was really struggling on the final hill.

Overall not such a bad weekend of orienteering. Definitely have quite a few things to work on, but I am becoming more confident in my abilities as an orienteer. My fitness also seems to often be superior to my technical ability in the forest which is promising as long as I don't do silly things like overun controls. I am getting much better at knowing when to slow down and tick off the features going into the technical controls, but I do really need to build up confidence and speed in those areas.

Still very nervous about WOC, mainly the long race which is apparently going to be extremely physical. I should be fine, maybe just a little bit broken. It'll be three weeks of orienteering in a row for me. Not really planned that way...

Still not sure that my head is in the right place, but I'm working on it.
