Orienteering race (SA Sprint Champs: Elgin) 11:03 [3] *** 2.76 km (4:00 / km) +12m 3:55 / km
spiked:13/17c shoes: Inov8 Flite 195

1: Smooth start to 1
2: Not sure about the map just around the corner of 1. Path seems to come off a lot later than it seems on the map. Also a bit of hessitation into 2
3-6: Pretty good, slowly catching Nic ;)
7: Cock up of the day. Silly mistake on an easy control. Ran right through the ditch and across the road on the other side. Had just seen Nic moving away from it... need to not do things like this. (~35 seconds)
12: Struggled to get across the river behind Nic. Lost about 6-8 seconds here.

A bit of a silly mistake to 7 and I'm quite glad that it didn't cost me. I would have been well clear of everyone else. Need to focus on not losing my head with people around me, especially when it is catching someone.

Won 14/17 splits.
3 PM

Orienteering race (WC: Middle) 35:13 [3] 6.98 km (5:03 / km) +223m 4:21 / km
spiked:11/19c shoes: Inov8 oroc 280

2: Apparently the completely wrong route choice. Went left around and took quite a lot longer than everyone else. (~10 seconds)
4: Think that this was on the wrong knoll. Was heading toward the right one, reached the right knoll... then turned to my right and saw it 40 meters away. (~10 seconds)
7: Probably lost a bit of time here. Nic is convinced that it is on the wrong thicket. I went north and then east along the road and then cut through the green at the last minute. Probably cut through the green too early and then basically went east again along the road. Did feel further than it should have been. (~15 seconds)
12: Went to the wrong feature. Pulled by another control that was there. Silly and so had to climb back up to the control. (~20 seconds)
14: Silly mistake. Looked for the forest corner but was then pulled by the forest corner with the road (very far north). Ended up climbing instead of contouring. (~90 seconds)
15: This feature isn't correct. Surprisingly it actually extends far further west on the previous map. Hit the ditch and expected to run west... turned out that it was 50 meters to the east. ~10 seconds

Not a great day of orienteering that wasn't aided by a few controls that were slightly misplaced. Can only blame myself for my mistake to 14 because it was really silly... Definitely cost me a gold. In orienteering you are actually just competing against yourself...

Running 30:00 [3]
shoes: Nike Pegasus 29 Shield 1212

I am getting excited for SA sprint champs and WC champs... Should be fun :). Out of all the international training camp people Nic and I seem to be the only ones that aren't sick. Time for some really fast running in some forest.

In other news...legs feel pretty good and no real niggles or strains other than a slightly swollen ankle. Trip to the physio tomorrow (for a service ;) ) before the weekend.

Orienteering (Pataias Sul) 1:01:17 [3] 9.36 km (6:33 / km) +13m 6:30 / km
shoes: Inov8 oroc 280

Final training in Portugal (and a much better training for me). This area was similar to the area on the first day and I enjoyed it a lot. I was really glad that I felt like I could orienteer again...

Some problems with 24 but other than that a pretty clean run and I was able to read the features really well.

Orienteering (Praia da veira park) 30:33 [3] 5.25 km (5:49 / km) +12m 5:45 / km
shoes: Inov8 Flite 195

Another wet sprint...

Nice intervals mixing different types of terrain. Messed up 10 on the second loop (seems like I took completely the wrong path and so I should have checked my compass to make sure...). Otherwise I enjoyed the challenging micro route choices in the town. Was nice to challenge myself to take the more complicated route choices to try to save time. I was also trying to execute them at speed, but the rain didn't help when it came to reading the map.
6 PM

Orienteering (Osso da Baleia) 52:12 [3] 7.5 km (6:57 / km) +40m 6:47 / km
shoes: Inov8 oroc 280

A much better map than what we have run on and more to my liking than most of the other maps...

Messed up early (wasn't confident going in to 1 and so I made sure that I was in the right place). Went to 4 instead of 2... and then proceeded to continue to 3 (before hitting the road and realising what an idiot I was).

5: Thought that I had followed the small ridge into the control, but struggled here.
6: Very shallow reentrant and so I struggled again.
9: I had the perfect attack points and executed the leg well. I am just not so sure of the reentrant itself or exactly where the control was placed (I can be pretty blind even when right next to the control...).
11: Took a safer route to this control instead of taking the faster riskier option...
12: Hit it bang on, which I was quite happy about.
14: Couldn't read the green well in this area so went one green patch to the north..
15: Silly and went to the rough open clearing first.
17: Almost did the same thing as Sarah ;). Started going up the ridge instead of across to the depression.

Had a much better run in the second half and was moving well through the forest. I always seem to run better on actual courses (instead of training courses), I suppose that the focus is different (these controls were a lot less technical).

Control descriptions on this map definitely helped.
