Orienteering 17:50 [3] *** 3.7 km (4:49 / km) +100m 4:15 / km
spiked:14/22c shoes: Inov8 Flite 195

Had seen the control at 1 beforehand so that was fairly straightforward, just had to decide what was the best way to negotiate the parking lot. Pretty straightforward to 2 as well.

3: Possibly could have gone along the road and then crossed close to 5. Works out to less climb and distance.

The long hill was terrible up to 10 because you weren't even able to read ahead (map exchange was at 10).

As I went into the school I slowed down a bit. Route choices on a 1:2500 map become more complex because things just happen faster.

13: Bit of a mistake to 13 trying to go through a closed door just after 12 (the passage was a bit further north ;).
19: Went past the tennis courts (to the south) instead of running along the field which was a better option. Was silly because I had seen Nico do this and thought that it might be a good option :/.
20: Mistake of the day, read ahead so I knew which side of the flowerbed the control was on, but I went up one flight of stairs too early and so went through the building :/. The tape that was here was what really confused me as it seemed to tape off areas that weren't out of bounds on the map.

Had an alright race. Started fast as usual and had a good leg to the first control. Thought that I would risk going straight from 1 to 2 but it wasn't worth it at all, wasn't really mapped as close to what it was on the ground (it was fight all the way).

Had caught Eugene at this point so used him to 3 (he did go quite far toward 4 though before just running along the path. Little bit too far to the right to 5 but then saw the small knoll with the control. Hesitated a little into 6. 9 I decided to stop early because I had just passed Nic and felt like I was going too far. The loops of road here were confusing but the control was easy enough in the end. Lucky through the green to 11 and saw N de Klerk coming into the control from the bottom so I knew it was mine. Good leg to 12 where I ran straight to it. There was a lot more rock and rocky areas on the way to 13, but that ended up being ok. Bit of hesitation coming into 18, should have pushed all the way to the control. Straight through the green to 19 following Cobus (there was actually a nice path through the green). I felt like either the map is wrong or the control was misplaced on 20. Was way too high up the hill. Then just 21 and an easyish run to the finish.

Note

Had to spend 16 hours on call this weekend (SA champs being next weekend), so it ended up being 10 and a half hours on saturday and then just 5 and a half today. At least it is now done...

Decided to take a rest day on saturday just to start relaxing a bit. No more real hard sessions before I leave. Rest day planned for friday (TedX Johannesburg :) )
