K18-suunnistus VI, Lahti / Hollola.
I had prepared myself to win this day. First shocking news were that this year, for the first time, the competition was done with a pair. In my case Jones V.
We did OK in the first map quiz and got to the forest in first place with two other pairs. First it was contour map in Tapanila. After that a mirror maps (which wasn't told) in Riihelä / Pirttiharju. I was the guy to go to the first cp and at first ran to the right direction, then back to the starting point and to the wrong direction, teamed up with Anatoli and he figured out it's a mirror. Off to the starting point again and to the right direction.
After that some street orienteering on a map from the map quiz. Swamproad, Mermaidpath, Juhani's street, Coociestreet, Forestboy's street and the last one at Backlandroad. We left same time from the mirror maps than two other teams but made an excellent choice to the second cp and the others were minutes behind. At this point I started to really push a bit harder and Jouni was all the time maybe 20m behind. I thought he was kidding when he shouted "I'm pretty sure the others won't catch us cause of our 4min / km pace". But afterwards from the gps I can see we really went that fast on the flats.
The last map. We thought there would be pretty much a straight line to the finish but oh boy we were wrong. Still a course to go which could've been a competition on its own. The 1st cp OK despite the hydration at this map's start started to kick in pretty hard. Next one we couldn't find though we were sure we're on the right hill (no one else saw it either). 3-4 perfect. To the 5th we left a one path early (wasn't on the map) from the powerline and were in big trouble after that. We located ourselves back to the map from the correct path and the foot of Kivikallio, went to the right direction but never saw the red strip (no one else either). We got so cold wondering that we decided to head towards the last cp. At this point we both started to get really tired. No real (water based) hydration for hours and 23km of running behind. We managed still to keep pretty good pace and finished first.
It's just that this year this competition didn't solve anything. It was just a warm up. Later that night we had a sprint in the dark with only matches as a light. We came second and thus we're the organisers for the next year K-18-suunnistus in Mäntsälä.
