Running 1:53:00 [2] 20.0 km (5:39 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel DS Trainer IX

Monday run with Assu, Hämis, Keinänen, Voimis and Jape. Can't remember when there would've been six guys attending.
Knee got bad at the end. Couldn't keep up with the guys at the down hills.

Sunday Nov 29, 2009 #

Running warm up/down 30:00 [1] 5.0 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel DS Trainer IX

Knee felt badish so one hour run turned into warm up.

Strength 25:00 [3]

Carried on from yesterday with two new stationary stations. I bet my boobies will hurt the next few days...

Otherwise it would've been a rest day but I try to keep the double digit thing going on.

Note

Gave the new Suunnistussimulaattori a try. Looking good. It can really be called a "simulator" since I made the same type of mistakes that I also do in the real woods.

Running warm up/down 30:00 [1] 5.0 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel DS Trainer XIII

Strength 45:00 [4]

Warm up running and circuit training by me at Jalis. 12 people taking part. 3 rounds of 10 stations with 2 x 45s+15s and one time 40s+20s.

Running 1:10:00 [1] 12.0 km (5:50 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel DS Trainer IX

I revitalised my old DS Trainers with duct tape. Worked like charm.
10h would've been hard to accomplish this week without putting sneakers on third time today.
Left knee has felt pretty bad for few days. And during this training it got worse. Downhills were agony.

Friday Nov 27, 2009 #

Running 55:00 [2] 10.0 km (5:30 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel DS Trainer XIII

Tiilikangas-Jalis with couple of mistakes.

Running long 1:53:00 [2] 19.7 km (5:44 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel DS Trainer XIII

Running 1:10:00 [3] 13.2 km (5:18 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel DS Trainer IX

With Sulttaani, Wilho and Jusbet.
Sulttaani showed some remarkable pace at the end. I was overwhelmed. He tried to get rid of me and kinda succeeded. But his under 4min pace lasted maybe 1.5km and mine 2km.

Friday Nov 20, 2009 #

Running 27:00 [4] 6.2 km (4:21 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel DS Trainer IX

The clock was 19:32 when I left towards Jalkaranta. I had just eaten so it was murder to keep the pace up so that I would be there in time. Back-bag and stick-bag didn't help either.

Floorball 45:00 [2]
shoes: Adidas Stabil

LS-37 floorball session.

Running warm up/down 7:00 [1] 1.0 km (7:00 / km)

Floorball 50:00 [3]
shoes: Adidas Stabil

Workplace's floorball session. Four-a-side, so a bit more running for me.

Skiing 1:20:00 [2] 17.0 km (4:42 / km)

Every thursday I've wondered why do I drive all the way across the town to play 60min of floorball and then drive back. So this time I took my skiing equipment with me. The snowmaking gun had covered maybe 425m one way in Sport Centre and this was the max time my head could take it. The trail itself was in really good shape. But with these temperatures, not for long.

Running hills 1:25:00 [3] 10.0 km (8:30 / km)
shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 340 'O'

Laaso x 7 with Hämis. Anniina was there also.

Note

Got Assu as my partner for Belgium tour. So it looks like I wrote that 2009 season summary a bit too early.

Tuesday Nov 17, 2009 #

Running 55:00 [1] 9.0 km (6:07 / km)
shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 340 'O'

This was supposed to be a rest day but then Jape ICQ Online -> lenkille -> OK. I thougt that with Jape's pace it'll be close to rest day anyway.
On the way we went to check out that had sunday's winning team violated orienteering rules or not (from control 23 to 24 / 104-105). We didn't come up with any conclusion...
We also saw a pile of snow at Heinsuo. Apparently the new snowmaking gun had been in use already.

Monday Nov 16, 2009 #

Running 1:34:00 [2] 16.0 km (5:53 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel DS Trainer IX

Monday run with Hämis. No one else bothered to come. Knees were a bit sore from yesterday and today's run didn't help. Some streching might help.

Note

Four hour live rogaining training tracking is on at 10:00 Finnish time. Me and jusbet as a team. First time for both.

Orienteering (rogaining) 3:52:13 [2] ** 32.3 km (7:11 / km)
ahr:142 max:182 shoes: VJ Panther

Rogaining training at Tapanila. First try and straight to number one. Maybe we should change the sport...
The start was pretty much what you can expect from team Hirvonen. We arrived there late so that we got the maps when most of the people had made route plans for almost 10min. Then on starting moment I realise that A.Le Coq's phone didn't have DNA-internet settings for tracking. Little bit of work and we were ready to race. About 4-5min behind all the others.
We started the journey with "we must visit all the controls" in mind but after an hour we realised we have to let go at least the famous "Tiirismaa north hillside" controls. Then right next to my home we had to leave one 80-point control untouched. On the way home still one 60-point but after that we decided to go for all the rest. This meant big increasement in speed. Last 3.5km we ran with 5'20 pace. And this included one huge climb.
I'm very satisfied how well we both kept the pace pretty good everywhere. I ran all the uphills (jusbet didn't in few places) and the increase in speed at the end felt like it should've started way before. Looks like five-star Raato-juoksu nourishment (raisins) did their task.

Running warm up/down 45:00 [1] 9.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 340 'O'

Wilho made a tactical move for tomorrow and didn't arrive to Jalkaranta. I was supposed to get a ride from him home-bound. Fortunately I got a lift half way.

Strength 50:00 [3]
shoes: Adidas Stabil

Running technique and circuit training by Mile-Masa.
Basic circuit training but some good coordination trainings. I wonder why I'm so good at those but feel so clumsy in the forest...

Orienteering (technique) 1 [0]

A really good orienteering technique training by Masa. It was the first time this was ever made and with little improvements it'll be a success story. It took maybe 20min.

Skiing 1:35:00 [1] 21.0 km (4:31 / km)

I was so afraid of Hapardi at LS-37-hour-board that had to do some skiing before floorball tonight. And I'm glad I did. Sun was shining, all the trees in white and trails were still in pretty good shape. I was a bit bumbed out about not going to Prague but those thoughts vanished on this training.

Floorball 50:00 [2]
shoes: Adidas Stabil

LS-37 floorball.
Only seven players... Last week 14. Club's new member and in week's time a KeparDI team member Leena was getting a feel for floorball. Can't say much about her skills cause she had a pretty bad flu.

Still one training to go for today. U21 España - Finlandia.

Thursday Nov 12, 2009 #

Note

It came close that I would've headed to Prague today (one spot came free for Yökuppi-trip) but a call to the travel agency gave me a price that was maybe 100-150€ more than I was ready to pay. It might've been a good trip...

Floorball 55:00 [4]
shoes: Adidas Stabil

Work place's floorball session at Energiahalli.
What is it with me and floorball..? Again I was more Janne Ahonen than Janne Tähkä. But at least I got some sort of compliment. Few guys said that they've never seen a guy so airborne.

Wednesday Nov 11, 2009 #

Note

Sylvester 5-daagse seems to be a proper canditate for next orienteering trip. Should be value for money at least.
Not sure will it be a solo trip or not. Rental car would ease up the task but would cost more than the flights on my own...

Running hills 1:15:00 [3] 8.0 km (9:23 / km) +555m 6:58 / km

Laaso five times up and down. Three times pretty slow and two times Mile-Masa pace.

New shoes in test. Laces kept on opening so can't say much about them.

Skiing 1:35:00 [1] 18.0 km (5:17 / km)

There should be some sort of "copy yesterday's training" -button in AP...

I would've really wanted that snowing front hit Lahti/Hollola more efficiently. Skiing feels awesome at the moment.

Monday Nov 9, 2009 #

Skiing 1:25:00 [1] 18.0 km (4:43 / km)

Yesterday minus ~1 km.

Note

Club's official autumn meeting was today. For the first time in maybe 5-6 years I got some "success support". Whoopee!
I also got my raffle prize from Kuivannon Kymppi. T-shirt and salt/pepper shakers by Wurth. Whatta day.

Sunday Nov 8, 2009 #

Skiing 1:30:00 [1] 19.0 km (4:44 / km)

First skiing of the season. Trails were in better shape than I expected. Only two spots where I had to do some nordic walking with skis in feet (they were Atomic+Karhu combination from early 90's, last waxing maybe 15 years ago...) and the other one was a underpass. Saw one other guy skiing and way too many trampling a.k.a nordic walking.

Strength 1:00:00 [3]

Running "technique" and circuit training by Timpuri. First I did with good intensity but towards the end something strange happened in my body. Most significant symptom was very low blood pressure. For a couple of times I felt like I was gonna faint.
I'm pretty sure few muscles will be sore in next couple of days.

Below I mentioned possible solo orienteering trips during the next few months and I got right into that. Found some good candidates. But if anyone have any good tips, I'm more than happy to hear about them.

Friday Nov 6, 2009 #

Note

Apparently some of the AP-aboriginals have written season summaries so I though to tag along.

After season 2002, this was the first summer I had done something for my physical well being (other than bad things). I started the real training in Nov-Dec and the first part lasted pretty much to Jukola. I started using AP at the beginning of March so I don't know how many hours I did. There was quite a bit of skiing so the hours might go over 400 in a year. This also led to the fact that I started to look more of an athlete rather than a boozer. Got rid of 12kg of lard in four months.

Season started with one of the best orienteering trips I've been to: Portugal O'meeting. Heaps of great moments there. BTW, next trip by Hirvosten Harhamatkat is in planning process. I might do some solo ones before that.

I attented more competitions before June than I had in two last years combined. Some of 'em had some good moments but mainly slow running with insecure orienteering. Almost the only goal for the whole season was Jukola. Qualification for it was the best comp of the spring. It gave me spot in 1st team but I gave it to my brother cause he deserved it more at that moment. I also wanted to run the 3rd leg anyway and it wasn't available at the 1st team. The competition itself went pretty well although I lost to Wilho... Passing Petri Forsman's calves in an uphill was the highlight for sure.

Then the usual serenity season. Only seven races in two months. Four of 'em at KRV. Some tight racing and betting with the guys. Second best ranking points of the season so it wasn't all bad.

Then the Autumn season. Fifteen competition starts in 2½ months. For a brief moment in Aug-Sep I felt like I could really orienteer. Confidence was sky high and legs were starting to work like I had expected for months and months. Technically one of the most solid runs of the season was at Mäntsälä - Kapinarastit, but the result wasn't as good as I thought it would be.

At the final straight of the season the legs started to work better than I could've ever imagined. Soon I found myself from the anchor spot in 25manna and the first guy in Halikko. Probably the most responsible legs I've ever got to run on my career.

I also got the best ranking points at the last individual start. Finnish night champs B-final. But that was pretty much a follow-through. So two best ranking points I got more or less following somebody else. Looking at my own performance the best competitions were: 1) Kapinarastit 2) 25manna 3) Prisma

- 32 competitions + full Kortteli- and Yökuppi season (8+14)
- competitions I'm satisfied at: Prisma, Jukola, KRV 2nd, Hollola, Finnish Relay Champs, 25manna, Halikko and Smålkku (and those two ones in which I followed somebody). It means that there's 23 competitions I'm not satisfied at.
- ranking spot 313 (2008 – 630, 2007 – 891)

Goals for 2010
- 1st class ranking spot (~270)
- långa natten, good performance
- Jukola anchor, leg position in top 100

Running 35:00 [2] 6.0 km (5:50 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel DS Trainer IX

Tiilikangas-Jalis. I ran through Tapanila and checked out the condition of the ski trails. I thought I would see several hiihto-niilos but there was no one. Eventhough the condition seemed pretty good. Might have to go and give a try tomorrow.

Floorball 45:00 [4]

Workplace's floorball session at Energiahalli. Only 45min cause one elbow got on the way of my nose. Had to stop the bleeding.

Looks like the first skiing is quite close. Looking forward for that.

Running warm up/down 30:00 [1] 5.5 km (5:27 / km)
shoes: VJ Panther

Tiilikangas-Laaso

Running hills 3:34 [5] 0.63 km (5:40 / km) +111m 3:01 / km
ahr:170 max:183 shoes: VJ Panther

Lately all the uphills have felt good and I thought to try what time I could get for one Laaso climb. It was pitch black and I wouldn't have minded having a lamp with me. Few times I had to really watch out where to put the feet.
In first steep place I was sure 4min would be tough to beat. Lactate all over the body. I guess over 5km warm up wasn't enough... But second one better. And when I got to the final long steep part I was hoping it wouldn't end.
I'm happy about the time (in those circumstances) but not about the max hr. Although it was a short workout, I was expecting 19X numbers.

Running hills 45:00 [3] 5.5 km (8:11 / km) +444m 5:50 / km

Laaso 4x up and down. Times between 5'-6'30. At least Anniina, Paxi, Anu, Juha P, jusbet and new face Leena were there.

Tuesday Nov 3, 2009 #

Note
(rest day)

I guess my legs weren't used to such hard surface and they are pretty sore from yesterday. Although I was planning to try tomorrow how fast I can run Laaso up one time. So rest day might come in use.

Monday Nov 2, 2009 #

Note

Yesterday's running / gardening / changing tires / picking thousand of beer cans from several places in my home didn't do good for my back. Might have to consider carefully for tonight's monday run.

I thought the massive ammount of lactate would look worse.

Running long 2:20:00 [1] 23.5 km (5:57 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel DS Trainer IX

Monday run.
I thought I would run to SC, run with the guys and run back home.
I was coming down the Karpalo hill and saw lots of people at Siiri statue. I was thrilled that finally there's more than four people at monday run. Getting closer revealed that they all had some sort of sticks in their hands. I assume they were HU-46 XC-skiing juniors (at least Pia Pekonen was leading the group). The cruel truth was that after they left, I was standing alone at Siiri. Since no one else came I thought to make a bit shorter run than I had planned.
It was pretty dark at northern parts of Tapanila terrain but fortunately Full Moon helped me a lot.

I presume no one who have found his/her way to my log hurt their feelings if I publish the K-18-Suunnistus pics here:

Kuivannon kymppi LIVE at 12 o'clock. In some point under 40min was the goal but the preparation hasn't been the best... It would after all mean 3'45/km.
Edit. OK. It was 45.28 last year and not 43.28 as I remembered... So googbye under 40. Maybe 41-42 will be closer.

Running warm up/down 35:00 [1] 4.0 km (8:45 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel DS Trainer XIII

20min up, 15min down.

Running race 40:48 [5] 10.6 km (3:51 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel DS Trainer XIII

Kuivannon kymppi. 7.5km on tarmac, 3.1km on gravel. Few 15m high hills.
As I wrote above, I had to re-think the goal for the race. 40min sounded so far fetched that I settled for 41min goal.
Running felt good at the start. Almost excelent. For a while I almost changed my goal to 40min. RaVa heavy dudes, jleh and aaanttol were in the same bunch for the first 4km. In the uphill, right before the gravel I made my first move to shake them off. Actually I did it also cause this one guy kept on cutting me off the road and once he spat me to my face. My small increase in speed did its job. Only one guy followed me from that quite big group.
The gravel part was slippery in many places. It was necessary to change lane all the time to get the best grip. After the mid-point I made a brief look back and realised it was aaanttol who made the sprint to follow me from that group.
The last part of the gravel was murder. The uphill took the juice out of me. Legs were like led and stomach cramped badly. Fortunately it was followed by a small downhill on a tarmac road. Legs went from led to nickel but stomach got worse. At some point I realised aaanttol was in trouble to follow me. This gave me bit of extra energy. I started the sprint to the finish way too early (at 10km post). 300m to finish and my legs weren't moving at all. There was so many people cheering that I didn't have the guts to crawl into the finish, I stayed in upright position.
4'40 off from last year's time so I should be pleased. But I'm not... Somewhere in the back of my head I was reaching for that 40min goal anyway and it was 5s/km away. Oh well, next year under 39min!
