Orienteering 53:07 [4] 5.2 km (10:13 / km)

Loch Ordie, last day. Sunny. 1.5k walk, 240m climb to start, latter half open moor...good that it was sunny - rainy, windswept would have been a problem for walkup for older classes. Good run, yellow terrain map, see well ahead...as in"go for it" - but heather/marshes were slow. Broke my new baseplate compass just after #15 (concentration-wise, really pissed me off about the 3 day-old, $100+ misfortune:-), lost 90" or so & on to 16 - was 7/90 when I left.
Writing this in an Edinborough flat, Scotch has caught up...at last....

Orienteering race 55:26 [4] 6.4 km (8:40 / km) +125m 7:53 / km

Day 5, Barry Buddon, another dunes venue, did not see the sea. 22 controls, mosly open, more challenging than yesterday at Tentsmuir. On the warm side, went to every control directly - only problem w/ relocate on #1 & 30m to right on #18 - maybe 1.5' mistakes, good energy. Problem was another MP!! never saw #13, right after 12. Not sure what's going on. Did not save any time by skipping as it was right on line, only another 110m & easy. Seems Ii have a penchant for making myself feel lousy. Day #2, failed to notice first control - both times, put dibbler in computer in results tent for these 2 surprises, esp today. Time will be interesting for me for comparison anyway. Still only 16/145 - lost maybe 1.5' on first; my best around 51-2 - won under 45'.

Hard starting terrain...

How does one skip #13?...

Orienteering race 1:05:54 [4] 6.9 km (9:33 / km) +95m 8:56 / km

Day 4, Tentsmuir. Was here 30 yrs ago, same meet! Basically flat forest, lots of tracks & some complicated contour detail. Sunny, warm. Had a generally good run, maybe 3' total mistakes due to concentration lapses.
Started 3/4ths way thru start window, was 7th when I finished, 11th upon leaving. Still need cleaner runs.... Did not see the sea:(. Was nearly 2 hr drive to assembly area.

Note

Rest day - drove to Rannoch Station w/ Beth, found a nice walk on track by loch & into forest. Great views. Drove right thru yesterday's map so got out of car & took a look at a few nearby control sites.

Orienteering 1:04:36 [3] 5.3 mi (12:11 / mi)
shoes: Teva

3rd day, distinctly rainy! Mix of woods & moorland, mud & wind. Nice map, good technical first part. Had a pretty good run, 3 small mistakes, maybe 2.5' total. Early finisher, maybe around 20? when results in. Saw a 49' but most hi 50s, 60s. Map was used at Scottish champs in '08 so that had to have been helpful to some runners. Generally pleased with concentration, no competitors distracting. There were vis issues w/ rain/glasses - had a new clear plastic shield which worked for most of the time.
Most surprising was that I could run considering how I was hobbling yesterday anytime I got out of car. Was able to walk almost normally this am & later jog so at start was not even aware of the situation. 26/143

Nice orienteering terrain...

Moorland, bracken at end...

Orienteering 1:11:14 [3] 5.8 km (12:17 / km)

Day 2: bad performance, mp for some still inexplicable reason, pulled left calf upper gastroc stepping in fern-hidden hole, hyperextended "just right", "pop", pain/limp for maybe 10', gradual recovery & after finish, barely able to walk. Taking nsaids & tried the hot tub once. Tomorrow will tell quite a bit more - have a hard time imagining running freely....

Map was of a local park near Perth, lots of trails. Best approach was probably to stay with trails, keeping close track - running 'way round' on a trailwas likely still faster. Contours were often soft & controls hidden in bracken occ, necessitating close APs, lots of concentration/confidence if not seen when 'there.'

Multitude of trails...

Orienteering race 54:34 [3] 4.5 km (12:08 / km)

First day, sun & clouds, cool, no rain. When I finished, was not pleased, not really displeased - however 2 bad controls & the second bad one, inexcusable - simple, short leg, did not concentrate, allowed myself to become distracted. Split sheet had new feature at bottom, current standing which I noted some 30' later & was 15th in 110, late starter so maybe not so bad. Was 10' ahead of Hugh Moore who usully finishes ahead in these European meets. Maybe when I was head-scratching, losing time, I was regaining on many others on the running side - need to see splits but am not near event center. Final 16/138.

Map & routes...
Navigated first 9 w/o any time loss to speak of, appropriate concentration...

First was a bit concerning, thickish, spotted boulder
2: got to right but figured that out
3: read carefully
same with next 3
7 pretty easy except for terrain

Middle legs...

8&9: lots of caution in green
10: bad, bad - not concentrating - 5:34 I think - splits upstairs, a 3' leg.
11 &12: good

Finish up...

13: disaster, simple but not concentrating - relocated on big boulder!
Rest were fast - will be interested in splits

Note

Staying in Aberfeldy at rather fancy Farleyer Lodge w/ crew of some 19:
Barb & Dave Bryant, David & Isabelle, lots of Barb's family, Dewitts, Christina Luis, her friend Melissa, Geoff (godfather to Is & David), Linda & Carl Moore. Huge table for dinner, lovely rural setting, a few long drives to venues.
