Note

Two dog walks, one out back, pondering swamps - the other around the Elementary school, ice-free asphalt, no people or cars, nice to be out at end of day.

Walking 57:50 [1] 0.61 mi (1:34:47 / mi) +21m 1:25:37 / mi

Out back with W - to contours and on top, some biggish hemlocks to thin the snow cover. Not sure where I was exactly. Used to be able to tell. Got a Friday at 11 sign out which caught me by surprise. Lasted about 25' after which my phone died. And that was that.

Walking 1:40:49 [1] 2.41 mi (41:50 / mi) +94m 37:18 / mi

With Beth & W. Fine enough day for January. West wind though, leading to return in the lee of the dike. Saw no one or dogs which was a first. W getting harder to corral at end of walks.

Walking 24:53 [1] 0.52 mi (47:51 / mi)

With W at BHS. Short but necessary walk in these Covid and politically uproarious days. Walked toward wind across Turee and then left, around the fields, in the woods. Nice stream there that I saw last summer for the first time. Got near the higher field, W heard the nordic skiers training. Got her on the leash before she ran off. Seems to be good skating in at least one place at BHS.

Walking 30:00 [1] 0.8 mi (37:31 / mi)

SPS with Willow around observatory woods & fields. Surprised to see enough snow for decent skate tho not prepared.

Monday Jan 4, 2021 #

Walking 35:00 [1] 0.8 mi (43:46 / mi)

With Beth & W on Robinson Rd. trail. Gray again but eventual sun. Not as much icy surface as I expected.

Note

To Old Stumpfield Rd. with Beth & W. There was adventure but passed up - ie, walking everywhere on the far-reaching white - but not anxiety free.

Came upon this sight on the road. Lacking perspective, I thought it was run-off from the Christmas rain. Further along, it became clear that the reservoir level had risen some 5’, leaving its icy waterline at forest edge. Even further along, while on the snow/ice covered road, there was a hollowness to our steps- 1.5” ice over some margin of air over ground - something to do with the way the water receded.

Managed to forget the 305 again. Another mostly gray, calm day. We did have a spot of sun when we sat on leaves on a south-facing slope for a snack.

12 PM

Walking 31:23 [1] 0.72 mi (43:35 / mi) +11m 41:36 / mi

Daily mind-healthy dog & owner walk. Mostly ice, Yak-Traks being sine qua non. Uninspiring gray upon gray above, same for white below. No falls & W was tamed before time-of-reckoning, ie, time to get in back of vehicle.

DD drive as the day turned to dusk and to dark: N fm Concord center, finally L on Hutchins (after all the 'No Exit or Do Not Enters' by the prison & quarry), to W. Parish, Broad Cove, Briar Hill, S. Rd to 77, Iron Works & home. Pretty amazing landscapes and these doors were still present years later. Optimism but nowhere to go.
