Note

UNO Zoom meeting, fun to see faces most of which I had not seen in months.
Come to think, I don't think I've seen any in the past year. Lex, Pete & Jim ran the show. Tony & Suzanne F, Alar, Eva, Ernst, Steve & Betsy, Deb, Ed & Liz, Peter G, Darrell S, & maybe 5 new faces.

Note

Rafer Johnson died yesterday. I remember his 1960 Olympic decathlon gold medal performance as young as I was. A life well lived, an inspiration in innumerable ways.

Orienteering 1:37:33 [2] 2.21 mi (44:08 / mi) +102m 38:36 / mi

@ Beaver Brook Assn with W. Maybe 45F at start. Generally nice woods, map I felt was too simplistic contour-wise in particular a good bit of the time. The copy I used is field work 2003. Straight to most, didn't care for control site choice for #3. Hard to keep in contact on way to #4 except at end. Didn't find #5 tho I was pretty sure I was in the correct reentrant. #6 went to it straight from trail tho I was not confident comparing land forms to drawn contour. One tough climb to hilltop by #7, no flag in reentrant - tho I was there*. Good outing, one soft fall. Would like to see my route on a map - can't recall how to do it.

Encountered one person two times. The first, W saw him I did not. "Dogs must be leashed". She was dragging hers which I thot was OK given low likelihood of seeing anyone. Heard a muffled shout of surprise. Then I saw him. W & I went into the woods on our way to the point, he carried on, never saw me. Maybe 40' later crossing the second bridge, he was ahead. He recognized W, said he wasn't concernd this time but he just about stuck her the first time, so startled was he. He was fully dressed for a considerably colder temp, had a small back pack, wearing a face mask tho it's likely we were the only encounter he had.

* Looking at the pdf shows I was at the wrong reentrant, little wonder no flag.
It was 100m or so south of the intended one - had been a point on a past brown course and pretty much a look alike with the correct but un-circled reentrant. The correct one was easier - less climb and close to a give-a-way wall. Also my version did not have yellow rides which would have made it easier.

Slo-Go @ Elm Brook Pool with Beth & W. round 2p - gray, somber, still. Walked the shore part w/o stick etc., hands in pockets. Brought back the old bathrobe (draped across a cement block for weeks) for the trash. It looked like a small bear from a distance.

Walking 1:14:00 [2] 2.4 mi (30:50 / mi)

Elm Brook Park with W late morning. Windy, still warm (mid-50s). Parked on office end of dike, then along it and back on the path in the woods - meeting various people and their dogs. W always causes a stir but is usually positively received with her antics. Using a leash is often indicated - I'm behind the eight ball though since she is harmless, brings levity and I don't want to walk a dog on a leash, esp in the woods. A gray wall

Forgot to bring the Forerunner as I left precipitously. Distance a guess .

Rookery & Hemlock with W. Great day in the making - still early enough to be chilly. T got to 50F, big, orange moon rise. Saw one fellow & dog - W was ecstatic. Rallied the Forerunner 310XT, how to use came back easily enough. Hardest was finding the charging clip. Wasn't sure where I'd find Garmin Connect but that also proved easy. Strava won't work on my too-much-filled phone, no storage space left with 16 gigs.
