Orienteering 1:17:35 [1] 1.4 mi (55:25 / mi) +64m 48:32 / mi

At the Ward Pound Ridge HVO/WCOC meet - met Spencer there. We did a yellow together and then part of an orange as time allowed. I'm pretty sure he liked it - maybe enough to return. WPR is a great intro place. Nice seeing a lot of familiar faces. It was a different perspective being in the woods but not on the clock.

After, went to Stamford for the clambake which was a world apart. It was a long drive home, starting with a traffic detour for a closed 95 entrance/exit just east of Stamford. Pretty numb by the time I got out of the car in the drive. The back was really displeased with the night in the tent - but that had to happen because I was really interested in camping there and was done with motels and wasn't going to lean on anybody.

GPX mostly for the record - a part of the orange course. Our yellow maps got picked up accidentally. Came home with an orange map.

Note

Drive to N. Salem, NY for a mapping class held by Ed Hicks near Danbury. Drove Thurs pm into eve. Rain after Hartford, hard at times. Class at Weil Preserve, a lovely, secluded place. The meeting was in a former house at the end of Willow Lane (Beth's name for her puppy - bow wow to the coincidence:) - horse country, fields and woods. A very good day - 8 of us plus Ed. Mapping with Ocad, Lidar uploads and their use etc. Pretty complicated first time through from lidar selection to utilization. Class was 7 hours, there about 8.

After to Ward Pound Ridge for a night of camping before a Saturday HVO meet. I’d invited a young man I’ve known for 30 areas to try out O. Saw him at his parents’ place about a month ago. I’d pointed out the utility etc. of WPR for someone who lived <25 mi away in Norwalk, CT. Ed’s class plus this O opportunity plus a clam bake on the shore of LIS got me (which included both my "student” and myself through a completely unrelated activity) out of my NH rut.

From my tent site -- at the very east part of the map, 100m E of Sat. starts -- I briefly entered the woods with the ’97 1/15 BG map. 22 yrs ago, 1/15 was just what it was. Today, in a moderately complex area, it seemed a challenge. Very quiet here tonight - campgrounds/shelters mostly empty. Sat in Meadow parking til well after dark, top down, drinking a warm beer and listening to low conversation and peepers & crickets. A good day except that I didn’t get any exercise, pretty much my fault/choosing.

Walk-jog 34:04 [2] 2.11 mi (16:09 / mi)

BHS track, chilly & gray. Too much on to start with. Legs weren't much ready to do much. Marvel at how many cars a high school parking lot might contain.

Boat and back again, much like Monday.

Walk-jog 34:06 [2] 2.07 mi (16:29 / mi) +2m 16:26 / mi

BHS track, Memorial Day, 7a, birdsong, cool, a bright green & blue world. 4 ladies walking/talkiing up a storm - kept a half track apart by my design: my combined walk & jog was faster than their fast walk . Earth worms (scraggly ones at that) wriggling for their lives to get off the track before they dried up.

Found a pearl earring and finally met up with the ladies just as they were departing. None was the girl with the pearl earring. Also found a track spike - long enough to be useful, short enough so as to not damage the all-weather surface.

First time to the track in months. Felt good for having done it first thing. After that, drove to the boat for 7+ hrs working there and 2.2 hours driving total, IS 95S traffic heavy but moving, 101W fine and 93N OK.
