Cardio 31:34 [3] 2.11 mi (14:58 / mi) +1m 14:56 / mi

BHS track on a generally quiet (after the mower departed) Sat am - overcast, cool. Legs felt good, it was cool but elapsed time a bit slower, possibly because I had an O map for walking sections? Blue Mt. BG 24, 4/20/02, back 16 years. I'd spent the night a Charlie's with a host of other O compatriots. Returned via East Haddam & Bill McDonald's place. Turee was misty.

Went to Concord with Beth to pick up a reupholstered chair & visit Walden & Concord town. Nice time at Walden - had a state park map so I could choose trails, knowing where they would take me. Went around the pond, stopping for a swim. Stopped at Thoreau’s cabin site. Also there recently on a very rainy Boston marathon day. Today was prime time summer. Continued around to find that Beth was halfway to the cabin site so met her there. We walked back to parking. The pond was a lovely blue-green (particularly through the trees), the water warm. How nice to be able to swim there regularly, any time of day. My last Walden swim was an August night 7-8 years ago when I swam the length in the moonlight, some kind of romantic kick propelling me.

Had lunch in town at Helen’s (old favorite of Beth’s) and then walked east from Concord Commons on Lexington Road admiring the stately old homes. Headed home on Monument St through Carlisle.

Bear Brook for a woods fix after work, around 4pm. It was a dry, fresh, breezy day with minimal bugs. Used a CSU/UNO training weekend map from 2014 with a course that began right at the corner of Hayes field. Did the first 7 in a generally flat area of moderate thickness. I was pretty sure I got all of them. The first, the end of a ruined wall, had a streamer over it. The wall was about impossible to make out but a nearby mapped boulder pretty much ensured I was in the right place. Three times I hadn't gone far enough but was generally on course. A careful look around worked every time. 8-26 were in the detailed, boulder-strewn logged area. Perhaps another day first thing.

13.6 miles, 24:30 home from Hayes Field parking.
