Road running 29:02 intensity: (24:02 @2) + (5:00 @3) 2.42 mi (12:01 / mi) +99m 10:39 / mi

Wow, February! Of course, wouldn’t know it in the Southern Hemisphere, esp in such a genteel climate. Jog turned out more interesting than I thought it would. From a suburban neighborhood, found a shoreside path that took me to Highfield Nature Reserve with an excellent view of Kawau Bay and Island.

Came to Bethshan Motel & Seaside Cottages after dark. Had made it as far as Warkworth in Auckland escape & when we could not find the place we were looking for, just opted for any sign with a tent on it. Met a very nice mgr who showed us an out-of-the-way grassy spot. Could hear the wavelets on the shore. Passed Snell’s beach, perhaps named for Peter Snell.

Walking 35:00 [1] 2.0 mi (17:30 / mi)

More walking, last full day in Tas. We stopped by a lake, walked to the shore & took a bit of a cool dip. At end of day, we took a walk with Hilary from their place on Mt. Nelson above Hobart.

No where near as much "running" as I thought I'd do. Constant change of routine, not running first thing etc. Had thought 3 mi in am and same in pm would work but not even close.

Walking 4:04:29 [2] 7.75 mi (31:33 / mi) +306m 28:06 / mi

Hike to Shadow Lake in Cradle Mt.-Lake St. Clair NP, 8 mi RT. From eucalyptus forest to more open terrain with marsh & bog. Had considered completing the loop vs out-back. Profile in the visitors' center (next day) showed it would have added more climb than either of us would have been happy with. Good effort all considered.

Road running 32:07 [2] 2.5 mi (12:51 / mi) +29m 12:24 / mi

Drive to Cloudy Bay around 0630 - tried a “run” on beach & paths but not possible. So ran back on the road for 2 miles - still wondering where my energy went.

Walking 32:20 [1] 0.91 mi (35:31 / mi) +22m 33:02 / mi

At Mt. Field NP: walk around Dobson Lake at end of 16k dirt road - and no energy for anything more (except seek out a cold beer!).

Walking 21:35 [1] 0.39 mi (55:19 / mi) +15m 49:25 / mi

Walk amongst tall trees. Had a ham “sensation” after the U of Sydney “run” which now seems gone. Just a moderate amount of enervation hounding me. Have had cold: ST, stuffy nose.

Blither
Beth & I drove to Cloudy Bay beach early. Walked on dunes & beach a bit then I ran 2.5 mi along road in returning. Warm and it was not much after 0700. Had coffee & toast with Hilary & Bill then left with fear of running out of gas on way to ferry. Gauge said around 60k remaining & ferry was 45. Made it, 3rd to last on & last car off. One k to gas in Kettering. We were anxious for a while! Coles in Kingston & then drove here to Mt Field NP. Drove up to Dobson Lake & walked around & then made a tour of the Tallest Trees loop...swamp gums hundreds of years old & highest about 80m. Indeed impressive! Extremely windy, a warm wind & bush fire smoke in the air. Looks a lot like southern California vegetation-wise. After, a walk to Russell’s Falls with incredible ferns as we approached. Wallabys abound - we see as many “2D” as 3D which is a bloody shame.

Road running 27:45 [2] 2.02 mi (13:44 / mi) +77m 12:17 / mi

On Bruny I just after getting off ferry. Open land covered with brown grass, eucalyptus groves. Ran up a broad spur, onto a road & kept near it to help with where I was. Bruny I after thinking of visiting Hilary & Bill for some 20 years!

With Hilary at Cape Bruny light

I met Hilary in 1982 at the NA’s in Manitoba (she reminded me). She & Bill Ericksson regularly came to the DC area from Tasmania for scientific work. Hilary was a QOC member. Don & Marit Davis visited on Bruny after the ’92 WMOC’s. She recalled Frances Hogle, the Lehmans, Tony Federer, the Walkers and quite a few more orienteers. It was good fun reminiscing.

Road running 28:22 [2] 2.89 mi (9:49 / mi) +63m 9:12 / mi

Pt Arthur opened an hour later than I’d thought so idled some time wandering by car & also discovered Remarkable Cave. Ran 3 mi from end of road. And not at PA as I’d hoped.
