Skate skiing 1:08:00 intensity: (25:00 @2) + (43:00 @3) 5.3 mi (12:50 / mi) +214m 11:24 / mi

Gunstock - think it was first time I've been there for just skiing & not ski-O. Superb day, great conditions. By pm, the NW wind picked up leaving debris on Brook Tr etc - first visit to that side of road. Nice to look around some.

Woods full of snow, looking more like winter except it wasn't cold. Had lunch at the alpine lodge, indeed the realm of the alpine crowd. Noted the occasional person flying across the sky right on the zipline...looked exhilarating, maybe to do in spring or summer.

Bought new skis & bindings as well as some rental Solomons to match the bindings.

Skate skiing 40:00 intensity: (20:00 @2) + (20:00 @3) 3.5 mi (11:26 / mi)

Interesting morning...went to BHS with dogs, thinking there might be supportive crust. Not quite - dp'd in SM tracks a bit. They were covered with a dusting so glide was very good. That got me motivated to go to TRT even tho disinclined as it was too much like driving to work.... Conditions were good to excellent. I was admiring the ability of two skaters who turned out to be husband and wife. He has been the groomer of TRT/White farm/Memorial Field area trails for the past 16 years with kids on HS ski teams etc. and competed in the Birkebeiner last month. She free skated so effortlessly & gracefully for around 30' while I was there. Turns out she is a local family practice doc whose name I knew. Both great skiers with a youngster on the SPS ski team. Also got a FB link for local ski info out of that very interesting encounter.

Snowshoes 20:00 [1] 0.4 mi (49:59 / mi)

SS loop DP. Wintry sub 20F, looks like a fresh Feb morn. New tracks & interesting to see how easy to lose SOD/way with snowed-in trees looking about the same - no significant landmarks. Cars on the road & two contours
helped.

Skate skiing 30:00 [2] 2.5 mi (12:00 / mi)

TRT before work - was hoping for a crust which there was but not enough to
support - sank about 2". Only one other skier there & surface had not been groomed yet (groomer was starting as I left at 8:15.) so there were ski track ridges from yest pm. Best part was dp in the glazed classic tracks. Felt warm in sun in spite of sub 20 & RWBs were carrying on as they do in spring.

Skate skiing 30:00 intensity: (10:00 @2) + (20:00 @3) 2.5 mi (12:00 / mi)

Returned in the pm, temp near 40. Soft but usable. Put some universal glide wax on skis - glide in the morning was surprisingly mediocre.

Came upon this in looking for some skiing videos. Have never seen anything like it! Seems a sadist's delight.

Note

Gallery: This seems apropos - sweet that winter is over. Novel, part-time indoor nature 'entertainment' was "stinkbugs" who have all but disappeared; no mice to speak of for the first winter in quite a few.

Skate skiing 35:00 [2] 2.0 mi (17:30 / mi)

Skate @ TRT, 35F around 3p when I started post work. Surface was groomed and not too soft. Left poles home on purpose - no "crutches"
does ask for more.

Can't imagine running for awhile - cardio at the Y but even the 15' graded walking the other day did not sit well with the calf - a simmering 'knot' any time anything other than regular walking is asked of it. Skiing seems more or less ok. Pool running seems safe - have never tried but can imagine it's decent, weightless cardio.

Classic skiing 46:11 [1] 1.26 mi (36:39 / mi)

Classic waxless of sorts. Beth dropped us off at Allen end of WH. Maybe 7-8" wet snow breaking trail. Early on, got bottom of skis wet in a small brook & after had much sticking snow - more than I cared for. Even walked some.

A winter wonderland on the last day of winter... WSW thru midnight per forecast...seems vindictive but it will go fast. Turned to mix precipitation but very magical at 3p.

Minimal energy from cold & neg feedback from leg.

Weightexercise workout 30:00 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (15:00 @2)

Went to Y late pm. Some cardio as well. Have had a cold for about 5 days now & it has taken a toll. Also the calf pull issue lurks in the background. Not a happy camper for the time being as it's high time to get on the stick & get going.

And tomorrow it's snowing to boot.

Dinner with Diane & Liz. Diane went to the Dion US SS champs in Bend, OR this past weekend & finished 3rd in her age group. Seems like it was a poor venue: not a lot of snow, one hairy downhill (where some runners elected to "sit down" to proceed) & over 60F. This winter it will be 'at home' in Vermont & hopefully better conditions. Her medal reminded me of some of the USOF meet medals...too much made-in-China chintzyness to respect.

Skate skiing 30:00 [2] 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

SPS, same as yesterday, then hurried off. Yesterday's gps track left a field off - puzzling.

Saturday Portland boat show, Sunday Boston flower show type of weekend.
