Orienteering race 1:09:49 [3] 6.06 km (11:31 / km) +217m 9:46 / km

JJ's/NEOC meet at Baldwin Hill, blue course, 5.48k. Perfect wx day. Expected it to be cold, was 44F and gray at home - but temp had risen to 58F just before arrival & probably a bit warmer in the next few hours. Pleased with the run, ie, no mistakes. See very few paces where I could have picked up time - would need more overall hustle to be faster. At flag 14, came to boulders 50m N of flag & looked north than S & saw flag. Route to #19 was probably very slow: went down & along stream & wall to junction - green was tiring, esp at the end of course - staying higher in white would have been better as a guess. Goal at end was to beat 70’ and was pretty beat doing so in last few minutes. Pretty far down being blue. PG 65ish', Jeff S 63', fastest under 50'.... Fun time, not running in circles or having episodes of gross loss of map contact helps a lot. Map needs MN lines of greater contrast or different color, eg blue.

Visit with Colleen & Jim after: 2 youngish, undisciplined dogs, 2 cats, 4 parrots plus our 2 dogs.

West End farm trail, something Liz told me about. So why not. 7.25mi, missed the trail twice so a bit longer. Very pretty route thru woods, some fields, along a few roads finishing at Carter Hill Orchards. Recognized a stretch north of Rossview from old lunch hour loops. Quite a few people out, not many going from one end to the other however. Tired by end. Hills & occ rocky footing became wearing. Feet ibuprofen-sore these days. Beth dropped me off at Silk Farm & picked up at Carter Hill.

Nottingcook wander, out around 2p, pest assuaging as well of course. Drove to WH Rd & then up PL to high point, into woods, right behind Dawkins' barn & then trails & 2 skips in woods. Overdressed - turned out to be quite mild/pleasant. Trails I saw were in good condition but hard to see with leaf cover. Sans blazes, one would not be able to stay on parts. Should have had a map - vis was excellent, could have checked for quality.... Passed Sambo's very energetic project - early 19th century house being brought forward to contemporary times.

Heard a bang on the window earlier:

half the time, they're dead.

Later this white-breasted nuthatch ? was recuperating in a nearby tree.

Walking 21:00 [1] 0.7 mi (29:59 / mi)

DP, 31F, blue dome, light NW wind. Walked across the ridge comprising the S border of the Arena, the waving brown grass on either side lit by the low sun - thinking ‘shucks, no camera’. Then into the woods, really open by local standards. Got near a house & of course, dogs disappeared. Don’t visit that area much any more - doubt anyone does. Very pleasant. Then back into the sun’s relative warmth.

Blackbrook-Purgatory Pond, cw, Election Day special in that I got Beth to bike along for company. Chilly, calm, sunny. Went to Purgatory Pond for lunch after - lovely pond, had never seen it.

Walking 18:00 [1] 0.8 mi (22:30 / mi)

Gray DP, blue disappearing. Passed by the Scouts' fireside place - the stack of pallets was gone! Wondered if it had to do with putting it on Saturday's map as a man-made object.

Rt first MTP joint chronically sore but works.

Note

Map, course & route from yesterday. Got it pretty much right by noting splits & doing a lot of moving of gps line...

Probably destined to miss #3 - needed to 'admit' #2 was in wrong place & reassess vs taking bearing & presumed distance from center of circle that was in wrong place. A gaggle of close-together cliffs on a moderately steep hillside with an abundance of thickish green is indeed a hard cp.

gym 35:00 [1]

Gym - weights. Some TI-devotee had left one setting at 270# on triceps press or something similar: put full downward weight on it w/o effect.
