Hiking 1:30:00 [1] 3.0 mi (30:00 / mi)

To & from here & there places off Going to the Sun Road - a you-deserve-a-break-today day. Met
Mike Potter
outside the Lake McDonald Lodge. Bike enthusiasts would have comments re his chosen bike and sked to visit all 4 US corners (eastmost ME, Key West, US-Mex border S of San Diego, Neah Bay) in the next 7 months. He had begun the day before from Whitefish. Invited him for dinner & the night should he actually get to NH.

Hiking 5:25:19 intensity: (4:25:19 @1) + (1:00:00 @3) 13.2 mi (24:39 / mi) +806m 20:43 / mi

Swiftcurrent Pass, 3hr04' up, 2hr21' return. Blue dome day. Skim ice outside tent in am. Bruce & Peggy stopped around 4mi, Beth went 5mi. I wasn't about to pass up the Pass. Stupendous views from near-top. Nice to finally see mountains on the other side. Walked fairly briskly back and a three effort going up for the last hour. Good to see the parking lot. Also saw two goats. View looking back toward Many Glacier campground at mouth of valley.

Watch lost satellites once for some 10' - not sure why, plenty of sky.

Note

Rained hard last night - chilly/dreary am. Went to Waterton PP, Prince of Wales lodge. Picked up a boat there, took a ride to end of Waterton Lake. Dinner in Cardston, Alberta at Athens Family restaurant...in a dry county. Lovely rolling prairie with impressive mountain silhouettes in west's setting sun.

Saw this bear coming & going on the boat. Ranger thought the black bear killed the other black bear (brown fur). It had been dead some two days and now it became clear that the alive bear was eating the dead one...

With Beth, Bruce & Peggy. Went to Many Glacier Lodge w/o a plan. Hiked to end of Josephine Lake & then latched onto Grinnell Glacier Tr. too late in the day, really. Made it 3/4ths of the way & returned. Saw plenty anyway. Took a boat ride back. 5.65 mi plus boat distance, Some 305 fudging.

Return, started chilly, grey & spitting but sunny delight by halfway down. Many stupendous views. Eternity written in sedimentary rock. All of this "work" is a weighted (by pack) "1" effort. Beth's quote for the day - on the walk down: "My heart is not a decision-making organ". Internet access is hard to find as is to be expected in NW MT.

Otokami Lake, breezy, sunny but tad chilly. No sweat with work req'd. 1882' climb per permit. Maybe 30-32# pack. Lake in sub-Alpine env't. Walk along a jade-colored lake with much ochre/piedmont? Met an interesting couple from Texas.

shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

AM jog/walk along shore of Bowman lake to Numa Tr start. Chilly/overdressed but how quickly things change. Dip in lake. Small bit of bear paranoia perhaps...quickly how "lonesome" even the lakeside trail became after only a short distance.
